Happy Friday! I didn’t have a topic in mind for this week’s Friday Five post, so I decided to write about some recent events that have me scratching my head, or basically “things that make you go hmmm”. Enjoy!
A Judgement Free Zone?
Eric Stagno really took that phrase to heart after he entered Planet Fitness, took off all his clothes, and then proceeded to workout. Don’t worry, he was arrested, but mentioned that he thought working out naked was okay since the gym was a “judgement free zone”. I’m really starting to worry about the lack of common sense in some people…
Cops called for breastfeeding?
It seems like some people think that 911 is their personal calling service nowadays. I still can’t believe that someone called the cops on moms that were breastfeeding their children at a pool. I know that everyone has their opinions on breastfeeding in public, but it’s certainly not illegal and calling the cops is flat out absurd. I’m sure they would much rather use their time, you know, responding to ACTUAL crimes.
Quitting Social Media?
Earlier this week, Pete Davidson said that he was quitting social media because the “internet is an evil place”, and I totally don’t agree with that. There are both positives and negatives to the internet/social media. I don’t know much about Pete (he’s a cast member on SNL), but I’m always amazed when celebrities complain about social media. There will always be internet trolls, but that’s why I love the block button, lol. I also try to cultivate my Instagram so that it’s a very positive environment. When you put out positivity, you get positive energy back.
No Love for Shalene or Desi?
Don’t get me wrong, I love the ESPYs. It’s nice to see the best in sports celebrated on one stage. I also love that the survivors of Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. But I’m very confused as to why neither Shalene Flanagan or Desi Linden received anything for winning the NYC Marathon and Boston Marathon. These were both huge accomplishments, especially for American women in running, and it would have been nice for them to be acknowledged.
Pick the Winning Lottery Ticket?
Earlier this week, there was a winner for the Mega Millions jackpot of $522 million dollars! Sure, you only get about half of that amount after taxes but that’s still a buttload of cash! I’ve often wondered – What would I do with all of that money?! It would nice to find out!
What stories have caught your attention lately?
I’m linking up for Friday Five 2.0 with Rachel from Running on Happy and Lacey and Meranda from Fairytales and Fitness.
Kimberly Hatting says
I can’t believe the national news (or, the Chicago news stations at the very least) didn’t get wind of our blogger meet-up. Seriously? I had not heard of any of the stuff you mentioned above, though…apparently the rock I’ve been under has served me well LOL
kookyrunner says
LOL you’re right – that blogger meet up should have made the news!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Frankly, I mostly try to avoid the news because it tends to be so depressing. I do watch a little bit, but there are days I don’t watch any at all and I was mostly on a news diet on vacation, too. It just makes me a happier person.
Social media can be pretty bad. I haven’t experienced it myself personally, but the things some people say because of anonymity can be downright scary.
Long before social media (aka FB & IG), I ran a pretty good sized forum. I was kind of strict, even going so far as banning politics one election year (obviously, no Trump! — yeah, that nastiness is always around). Believe me, some applauded that decision and others were downright riled. You have to have a thick skin!
kookyrunner says
I guess I have a thick skin because I tend to focus more on all the positives of social media. If I had never started this blog or Instagram, then I wouldn’t have experienced the epic blogger meet up last weekend. I am very thankful to social media for connecting me with SO many like minded women who love running!
Politics just seems to drive people crazy so I only talk about that with people in person. No need to get in back and forth debates on Facebook, lol.
The Accidental Marathoner says
I am ever amazed at the things people do. Topping the list, of course, is the Cheeto in Chief himself. It’s like a really long, really bad joke. Of course I’m watching the news right now and Roseanne Barr is rambling about how her recent Tweet was not racist. SMH.
kookyrunner says
Oh it totally is and drives me insane everyday. I should probably do a media cleanse where I don’t watch any news for a week, lol
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
I heard about the naked guy-too funny but glad I was not there to see it in person. 🙂 Social media can be good and bad. I really try to keep myself out of any political debates on line and focus on connecting with like minded fitness folks. I think we have a great little supportive tribe 🙂
kookyrunner says
Totally agree with you. I also don’t get in arguments with people in the comments section of posts. I feel like you get what you give and I don’t want to give any of my energy to BS so I just choose to be positive!
Fairytalesandfitness says
I did hear of that 911 call. That whole situation was just ridiculous!
That is kind of a bummer that Shalane nor Des got recognized for their accomplishment.
kookyrunner says
I was upset for both of them. It seems like “mainstream” sports doesn’t really respect running which is a shame.
Wendy says
We watched the ESPYs and it was love for the big sports stars. Idk. I often wonder why sports like soccer (and rugby) don’t make it here in the US. Such a shame.
Don’t get me started on the whole breastfeeding thing…why are breasts so sexualized?
kookyrunner says
Agree with you about the ESPYs – seems it’ more for “mainstream” sports, which is totally cool, but it would be nice to give some love to the other types of sports like you mentioned.
The breastfeeding thing always drives me crazy – I don’t get it at all! Is the baby just supposed to scream and go hungry?!
Patrick @looneyforfood.com says
I herd about that naked guy. Hmmmm and I think social media can be good and bad. Depends on how you use it and your emotional state
kookyrunner says
The naked guy just makes me laugh everytime I think about it
Lesley says
It is amazing how uncommon common sense is. Judgement free zone doesn’t mean take your clothes off. Unless you’re in San Francisco. I heard on the radio driving in Wednesday it was national nudity day…
kookyrunner says
LOL exactly! I just feel bad for all the people in the gym that had to witness that!
Debbie says
People are calling 911 for stupid things these days way too often. Sadly, mostly for people of color. It’s gotten pretty shameful.
I’ve wondered what I would do with that much money before. It’s hard to imagine what I would do beyond finding a large property so that I could fit all the dogs that I already have. And pay somebody to care for them once in a while so I could travel. Still, that’s a lot of money to spend!
kookyrunner says
I 100% agree – it’s totally shameful and I hope that it stops soon. I just think of all the wasted time and resources that result from people making these dumb calls.
If I won a large sum of money I would love to travel a lot more. That’s one thing I know I would do for sure.
HoHo Runs says
The only news I hear is from the radio on my short drive to work. I like it that way. But, I miss out on the fun/amusing/absurd stories too. I confess to breastfeeding one of my kids UNDER A TOWEL at a hotel pool years ago. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
kookyrunner says
I tend to listen to local news in the morning but then I catch up on national news in the evening. Sometimes I think I need a “news detox”, but then I like being informed so it’s kind of like a catch 22.
Darlene says
Social media doesn’t bother me at all. I just ignore what I don’t agree with. I can’t imagine life without the Internet. Look at the running bloggers that I have met (at least virtually.)
kookyrunner says
Same here. I just ignore or if someone leave a weird/nasty comment I just block them. I try to put my energy into the more positive aspects of social media.
Hannah says
It’s horrifying what people will call the cops for. I’m sure what makes it to the internet is only the tip of the iceberg. I recently read an article about 911 operators…yeah, most of their calls are far from emergencies.
kookyrunner says
That’s so sad to hear. I feel like these people are taking valuable time and resources from legit REAL emergencies.
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I have thought about quitting Facebook but ultimately, it is a great way for me to stay connected with friends and family. I know the internet can be brutal, so I do see why someone would want to quit if their experience is negative, or they can’t avoid the negative aspects. It’s such a personal choice!
I will be honest, I made a comment on reddit (about Big Brother, a silly reality show- nothing serious) and got a TON of down votes and it made me sad! I was like, omg, all I said was my opinion on something related to the show and I got down voted!
kookyrunner says
Same here. If I were to quit a social media platform it would probably be Facebook, but then I think about everything I would miss. Plus it’s the best way for me to stay connected to family and former classmates.
That’s horrible that you experienced that just based off of a comment!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I know, I need a thicker skin!! lol
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I heard about the guy at Planet Fitness – just shaking my head. And please don’t even get me started about the breastfeeding and calling the police. I really am starting to wonder about people.
I’m glad you mentioned the ESPY’s ignoring both Shalane & Desi – how does a sports awards show not even acknowledge such huge accomplishments?!
kookyrunner says
I heard the Planet Fitness story a few days ago and yet it still makes me laugh, LOL
The ESPYs was definitely disappointing, but I guess running isn’t considered mainstream enough? That’s the only thing I could think of.
Jenny Albertson says
I think in today’s world you just have to take everything with a grain of salt and try to ignore the stupid, haha. That being said, people can be very rude, or inappropriate, and I can get tired and impatient of all of that.
kookyrunner says
I totally agree with you! I try to block out all the negative when possible.
Shathiso says
I have a friend in the UK who used to work for the 999 (911) Call Centre. Real and terrible emergencies, several a night sometimes…heartbreaking. It used to infuriate her when she got such silly calls. Blocking the lines for critical emergencies.
kookyrunner says
Exactly! That number should only be used for real emergencies. I can’t believe that people use it for such foolishness
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
I AGREE that Desi and Shalane should have gotten some recognition at the ESPYs!
kookyrunner says
Totally! What they both did was so amazing!
Laurie says
I certainly have a lot of love for Shalane and Desi! Too bad the ESPYs didn’t agree. And the whole breastfeeding thing is ridiculous. What is the matter with some people???
kookyrunner says
I think some people are just totally lacking common sense!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
That breastfeeding story is just absurd. I agree with you, the police have much better things to take care, and calling them because you’re uncomfortable with watching a baby eat in public is just ridiculous.
kookyrunner says
That story drove me mad! I just felt so bad for the moms.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
It’s definitely too bad that Shalane and Desi didn’t get any recognition! I agree that the internet has both positives and negatives- I try to just ignore the negative stuff!
kookyrunner says
Me too! I just try to not give my energy to all the negative stuff.
Marcia says
That’s a shame that Desi and Shalane were ignored. I finally got to reading an April edition of Women’s Running and the whole focus was on Molly Huddle and how they “though” she was going to win Boston this year. Guess they thought wrong!
kookyrunner says
Oh wow that’s so interesting about Women’s Running. I hope that they also do a whole article eventually on Desi’s win.
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
Face palm on that naked dude. For real? Every time I hear a story like that I’m also amazed at the lack of common sense. I don’t watch a lot of TV so I didn’t know about Shalane or Des not getting awards? What was it, just a show about recent accomplishments? I think this is another reason women are undervalued…their accomplishments aren’t as celebrated.
kookyrunner says
I feel so bad for all the people in the gym that has to experience naked guy, lol. What a mess!
The ESPYs are kind of like the Oscars for professional sports. They give out awards like “best male athlete” “best team”, etc. It was a little disappointing that neither woman was even mentioned during the broadcast.
Farrah says
I can’t believe someone called the cops for someone breastfeeding–are you kiddin’ me!? ._.
Agreed with social media–there are definite pros and cons to it. I try to cultivate a positive environment too on mine. :]!
kookyrunner says
I know – it’s so ridiculous!
Yes, so important to cultivate a positive space for social media.
Esther says
I find that common sense is less than common these days! Seems like people think for themselves less and less.
I give S AND D huge awards! They both are amazing!
If I won a lot of $ I would pay off my last school debt and then start an organization for helping kids in any way I can.
kookyrunner says
Love your idea for starting an organization to help children! That’s definitely a good way to spend money, always a great feeling to help others.
Cari says
I love social media, but there are bad apples everywhere sadly.
The ESPY’s is just sad in the way it isn’t representative of the full breath of sports. Even with a female host, no love for women’s sports. I wish I could say I was surprised though
kookyrunner says
Yeah I was kind of let down at the ESPYs this year, but maybe next year they will get better about including all sports, not just mainstream ones.
