…and just like that, training for the AirBnB Brooklyn Half Marathon came to an end this week. It was definitely a fast 12 weeks of training!
Monday 5/15
Quick 2 mile run before going out to celebrate my dad’s birthday!
Tuesday 5/16
I volunteered with my job at a local park. It was kind of warm that day and we spent 2 hours pulling weeds and doing overall clean up of the park. It was hard work! I ended counting that as my workout for the day, lol
Wednesday 5/17
I took the day off work so I could go down to Brooklyn to get my bib for the race. NYRR puts on a pre-race party for this bib pick up and it was pretty cool! I also did my usual Boot Camp class (55 minutes) that evening.
Thursday 5/18
Another 2 mile run.
Friday 5/19
Rest Day!
Saturday 5/20
RACE DAY! 13.2 miles for the AirBnB Brooklyn Half Marathon. (Race Recap coming up on Wednesday).
Sunday 5/21
Semi-Rest Day – A recovery walk and lots of stretching and foam rolling.
Total Weekly Miles – 17.2
Total Training Cycle Miles – 194.4
Grade – B
It was a pretty light week for workouts because the race was Saturday. Although the race didn’t go as planned due to things out of my control (calf cramp, serious GI issues), I’m still pretty happy overall with this training cycle. Of course some weeks were better than others, but I think I had a pretty solid training cycle and a good base as I start marathon training. Thank you all for joining me on this 12 week journey!!
Although this training cycle is over, I’ll be jumping right back into training starting tomorrow! I hope you’ll also join me for my 20 weeks of training for the Chicago Marathon!
Random Question: Does anyone know where I can buy any “In Training” Chicago Marathon merchandise?
Did you have a good week? Did you race this weekend?
Also, don’t forget to check out my charity fundraiser giveaway for Hope in Motion – Each $5 donation = 1 raffle ticket! Entries are low, so if you buy a ticket there’s a good chance you will win a prize!
I’m linking up with Holly and Tricia for their Weekly Wrap, the Jess’s, (Jess Runs Atlanta and Jess @ The Right Fits) for their training recaps and Courtney for her Training Recap Link Up!
Dawn Rambles says
Congrats on your run and good luck on your next race. It’s been several months since my last race so I guess I should plan another one soon.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Dawn!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Isn’t it crazy that you have to take a day off to go into the city to pick up your packet? We have to do that here too. As much fun as the big city races are, the logistics are not so fun. Anyways, congrats on your race! I’m looking forward to the recap!
kookyrunner says
Yes, totally crazy! Although I really appreciated a day off work (it’s been crazy), it’s still annoying to make the trip from CT to Brooklyn. I really wish they would have the option to have bibs mailed to your home. I would pay extra for that, no problem!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Sorry your race didnt go as planned, but it sounds like you are in the right mindset about it! And its always helpful to have another race to look forward to. I cant wait to follow along as you train for Chicago!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Lisa! I’m just trying to keep it all in perspective. In the grand scheme of things, its just a race and there will be more in my future!
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
I know your race did not go as you planned. I am looking forward to reading the whole recap
kookyrunner says
Thanks Deborah. I’ll have the recap posted on Wednesday. It’s going to be pretty comical because the hits just kept on coming during the race. I can look back on yesterday and laugh because it was all so ridiculous!
Kimberly Hatting says
Although it wasn’t the race you were hoping for, I’m still anxious to read about it. It took me awhile to come full circle with my Route 66 experience…and that was a whole lotta stuff outta my control as well. I don’t know if that made it easier to accept what happened, or if that made it worse because I had NO control over the situation (other than my attitude and perseverance). None the less, 13.1 miles is a long distance, and you made it to the finish line 😉
kookyrunner says
Thanks Kimberly – The race recap will be posted on Wednesday! I think any time we cross the finish line, especially for 13.1, we have to celebrate!!
Zenaida Arroyo says
Congrats on your run! I am looking forward to hearing your recap. I’ll check the local Fleet Feet store and see if I can find gear for you. For many people here marathon training starts in early June.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Zenaida! I opted to do a 20 week training plan this year so that’s why I’m starting a few weeks earlier than most people.
Jessie says
Congrats on the half marathon! Sorry to hear about the challenges, but glad you pulled through.
Excited to follow your Chicago training!
Your dad’s birthday cake looks amazing.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Jessie – It was a hard race yesterday but I was very happy that I was able to finish! I am looking forward to training for Chicago even though my legs are super sore today lol

kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Barrie!
Debbie says
Congratulations on your race! I hope the beginning of your new training cycle includes a little recovery time from this race!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Debbie. I’ll be doing another recovery walk today!
courtney @ eat pray run dc says
Oh man, I didn’t realize you were going straight into marathon training! I hope you will at least give yourself a mental break this week! Well done – even though I know the race wasn’t what you’d planned for, your training was very strong!
kookyrunner says
Yup, rolling straight through to marathon training, but I’m doing another recovery walk today to ease my way back into training!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Congratualtions again on your race! I can’t wait to read your full recap – I’m glad that you’re happy with your training cycle, you worked so hard!
I just made a donation to Hope in Motion on your behalf – I can’t believe it’s already marathon training time!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Janelle! Definitely not the race I wanted or trained for, but I am always so thankful to cross that finish line!
Thanks for the donation and good luck in the giveaway! (I’ll pick the winners on June 3)
Anna @ Piper's Run says
Race week is always the best. Congrats on your race. Sorry to hear you had some stomach problems.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Anna! The race didn’t go as planned, but I finished and that’s what is most important! 🙂
Marcia says
Fwiw every single person I know who ran that race struggled. Can’t wait to hear more about it. Looks like our dads both celebrated birthdays last week. Usually our local Fleet Feet and New Balance stores will have in-training merch. I’ll keep an eye out for you. AND I’ll be cheering for you at mile 13!
kookyrunner says
Wow, really? Maybe it was something weird going on that day, lol. I’ll definitely have the race recap posted on Wednesday.
Happy belated birthday to your dad!
Thanks for keeping an eye out for the merchandise. I wanted to buy and “In training” shirt or cap. Looking forward to seeing you on the Chicago Marathon course!!
Michelle Rogers says
Congrats on your race, though sorry you had challenges. Looking forward to your recap! And happy birthday to your dad — the cake looks delicious!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle. Yes, the cake was SO good!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
It’s always hard when a race doesn’t go as we’d like it to. Good thing you’re already set up for the next one!
And talking about food porn . . . just look at that cake!
kookyrunner says
Definitely. I have other races to focus on in the Fall, so I can’t let one bad race get me down.
LOL, yes that cake was delicious!!
Ana says
Congratulations on your half marathon!! That medal is so cool!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Ana! I agree – the medal is awesome!
Annmarie says
Great job friend! Sorry again about your GI issues – I know all too well how awful that can be while running. Looking forward tot he recap and following along as you train for Chicago, how exciting!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Annmarie! 🙂
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
I know what you mean about things out of your control but I’m glad to see you finished your race! Congrats to you on that another one in the books!
Take it easy and enjoy this week after your race. I’m headed not to check out your charity fundraiser!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Tricia! Anytime I finish a race, it’s a good day! 🙂
Janalyn Sullivan says
Twenty weeks for training? Hmm, I might want to pick your brain! I have about 49 weeks to train and need help spacing it out
Coco says
Oh, sorry to hear your race didn’t go as planned. It’s so hard when that happens, but it happens to all of us. I’ll look forward to the details anyway!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Coco. I’ve come to peace with it and know that it just wasn’t my day!
Jenn says
I’m sorry the race didn’t go as planned, but you can check off another half marathon, and know that your training was totally on point! Sometimes race days aren’t what we hope. It’s all part of learning and growing.
I absolutely love the medal and the shirt, though – great swag!
You had an amazing week! Congratulations!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Jenn. It’s something that happens to the all of us, right?!
This race always has great race shirts and medals and they definitely didn’t disappoint this year!
Renee @pinkypie says
that went really fast! I can’t believe it’s already over!!
I actually love taking a day off to get my race packet and go to the expo! really gets me in the mood. however, I just actually like taking a day off (and it’s a luxury, I know — I guess it would be different if I didn’t have so much time off to take!). The concept of a Half Marathon (or any race, except for a rock n roll 5K) on a Saturday though just boggles the mind. Here in Europe pretty much all races are on Sundays. I like this because there’s one more nights sleep that could help you rest up for the big day. Otherwise most people are working the whole week, etc. Anyway. I digress.
I’m really sorry to hear you had issues but I do look forward to the recap!
My week was sleepless. No races. This coming weekend is Liverpool!
I’ll be in Chicago supporting! Hopefully we could meet in person there! Good luck with your training – I’ll be following along!
kookyrunner says
I definitely see your point. Going to the expo gets me in the race spirit, but i also like my days off to just relax. In the US I think most of the races are on Sundays, but I actually prefer Saturday races as it gives me an extra day to rest before the work week.
I’m glad you’re be in Chicago!
Mary Beth Jackson says
Great week! Weed pulling definitely counts as a workout- I would claim it! I can’t believe you have to take the day off for packet pick up- I hope that was by choice. It does look fun though and I love the shirt!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Mary Beth! I couldn’t believe how tired I was after pulling all those weeds (I never do yardwork, lol).
Technically I could have taken just a 1/2 day off, but I have vacation days to use so i just used the whole day, lol
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Congrats on your half completion! I can’t wait to read your recap tomorrow!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Deb!
Teresa says
Yay for Chicago! Anxious to read your Brooklyn recap tomorrow …I’d love to do that one some day! Oh and Happy Birthday to Kooky’s Dad! 🙂
kookyrunner says
