Another week of training complete! This past week and next week are my peak weeks for training. Overall it was a pretty good week. I’m feeling a little beat up after yesterday’s long run but I think some extra foam rolling and stretching will make me feel better.
Totally unrelated, but I’m also thinking about everyone dealing with Hurricane Irma. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
Monday 9/4
Labor Day! Since I had the day off of work, I decided to do Tuesday’s workout today. A nice 3 mile run before a body works + abs class. In total, a great 90 minute workout and I also did my PT exercise (15 minutes)
Tuesday 9/5
After three hard days of workout, it was time for something low impact. I did a 30 minute fat burning workout on the stationary bike + PT exercises (15 minutes).
Wednesday 9/6
Boot camp (55 minutes). Nothing like mixing cardio and strength for a sweaty evening workout!
Thursday 9/7
8 mile run + PT exercises (15 minutes). These longer runs during the week are rough!
Friday 9/8
REST DAY! I did some extra foam rolling and stretching since my legs felt a little tight from Thursday’s run.
Saturday 9/9
20 mile run! My first (and only) 20 mile run of this training cycle.
Sunday 9/10
Spinning (60 minutes). My legs were a little bit angry with me this morning, but I was happy that I still made it to my spinning class. I’m going to miss the class the next two Sunday because of races, so it was good to go today!
Total Weekly Miles – 31*
Total Training Cycle Miles – 397
Grade – A
*Mileage was lower this week since I did Monday’s run on Sunday of last week.
This week I was able to get in body works + abs, boot camp and spinning classes which I was really excited about. I also enjoy my stationary bike workouts. I don’t do them often, but they are low impact and a great way to get in some cardio and a sweat in a little amount of time.
My training plan called for 18 miles on Saturday but I felt so good that I went for 20! The beginning miles and the last few miles were a little rough, but I’m happy with my middle miles. I was able to keep a pretty consistent pace for those miles which is huge for me because my pace is usually all over the place, lol! I only used Tailwind during this run (no gels, chews, etc) and I didn’t have any stomach issues. My knees felt good for a majority of the run, just a little soreness, but I’ll take it! I haven’t had many great long runs during this training cycle so overall I was happy with how everything went on this run.
Originally I was supposed to do my 20 mile run next Sunday, but now it will be 18. This works out well since I’m running the Rock ‘n’ Roll Philly 1/2 marathon next weekend. Logistically it’s going to be a little hard to get in all the extra miles before the race, so at least now I only have to get in 5 miles vs. 7 miles!
Next week is another peak week and then it’s time for the taper! π
Have you ever extended a long run because you were “in the zone”? Are you excited for any upcoming Fall races?

What a great week you had! I wish that I felt that good running 18 milers lol.
Can’t wait to hear about your experience with RnR next week. We ran the Philly marathon last year and I loved the course. The city is great as well! If you want any food recommendations, let me know!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Sara! I ran RnR Philly last year and I really liked it. Philly is such a great city!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Wow, thats awesome that you were feeling so good that you extended your long run! I did that once during my last long run before Philly- its definitely a confidence booster! Hope the rest of your training continues to go well!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Lisa! I rarely feel energetic at the end of a run so I took advantage of that haha
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
You had another stellar week girl! Crushing it π
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much!
Kimberly Hatting says
WOOTTTTT!!! Awesome week for you! ahem…I have those pink Mizunos in Monday’s pic π
kookyrunner says
I love those Mizunos!
HoHo Runs says
Awesome job with the 18 turned into 20 miler! Congrats on the peak week too. It’s hard to believe it is almost time for Chicago. I’ll definitely miss it this year. I have a bone to pick with it (actually two!) and hope to get back there one day for redemption. Good luck at the half marathon next weekend!
kookyrunner says
I can’t believe it’s so soon. My last really “long” run is on Sunday…eek!
Jessica @ I Am Teacher Fit says
Running is the new hangover, hahaha! Yes!! My husband was so annoyed when my alarm went off at 5:30 Saturday morning. But I’d much rather spend my weekends running than hungover these days!
kookyrunner says
LOL I love that phrase too – it’s so fitting! My alarm goes off earlier on the weekends than during the week – it’s so crazy
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
You had another great week! Congrats on your 20-miler! I’m impressed you made it to spinning today!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle! I’m not sure if spinning was the best idea, lol, but it was good to get some movement in my legs!
Steff says
Great job Kim!! Sooooo close to race day!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Steff – I’m excited!
Coco says
Woohoo on the 20 miler! You are so close! That’s fantastic! It is hard for me to fit in more than 6 miles during the week, unless I can be late for work π
kookyrunner says
Same! I always feel like I’m racing against the clock with the longer runs during the week haha
Teresa says
20 mile training run …wow, I just can’t imagine how I will handle that one! π
Great week and good luck on the Philly half next weekend! Sounds like you are ready!!
kookyrunner says
You can totally do it Teresa!
I’m looking forward to Philly – it’s my first race in months!
Marcia says
Way to go adding on to make 20! That’s awesome and speaks to how well you’ve trained to this point! Can’t wait to see great things from you in Chicago!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Marcia! I just hope I feel as good on race day!
Lesley says
I have learned to not extend my runs, even if I’m feeling good. That’s what got me in trouble in the first place, and my competitive streak would take over. Now keeping with my schedule means I have a better chance of keeping my knee happy.
kookyrunner says
It’s a rare occurrence for me so that’s why I took advantage. I had a 20 miler on the schedule for next weekend so I just switched them and will now do 18 π
Zenaida Arroyo says
Great job on running 20 miles! That is great that you only had 18 but felt great and ended up doing 20. π So you are liking Tailwind, huh? Is that what you plan to use during the marathon?
I rarely run more than is expected. If the plan says 5 miles then that is what I do. π
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I do really love Tailwind and I’ll be using it for the marathon.
I usually always stick to the training plan for my runs, but it’s rare that I have extra energy at the end so I took advantage lol
Anna @ Piper's Run says
Great job with that 20 miler. I’ve run a race before and tagged on extra mileage at the end but also have tagged on 1-2km on a long run when I’ve just been feeling great!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Anna!
Debbie says
Nice job on the run! I’ve had good long runs before but never felt the urge to extend them! ?
kookyrunner says
Thanks Debbie! I figured I should take advantage of the feeling since it comes maybe once a year lol
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
20 miles done! Woot!! It’s all easy from here!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Nicole!
courtney @ eat pray run dc says
I’ve been thinking about the Chicago marathon today since I’m back here for work. Such a great race. You are going to have the best time!!
kookyrunner says
I’m SO excited!
Marina @ Happy Healing says
Wow, what a great week. You are inspiring! Great job on the 20 miles. I went to spinning yesterday, too. It’s such a great workout/a great form of cross-training!
Hope you have a great day π
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Marina! Hope you have a great day as well.
Cyndi says
Nice job on the 20 miler! I didn’t run a marathon this year, so I’m looking forward to those runs! My next race is a half in November. Training “officially” starts next week.
Running is the new hangover…..love it!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Cyndi!
I love “Running is the new hangover”! It’s from my running calendar from GoneForARun
Ana says
I admire those who can ran a half marathon, and then do additional miles after the half! You are amazing!! I will be running Philly Half with my husband and sister. It is going to be another hot one! have an awesome race!
kookyrunner says
That’s awesome that you are running Philly – maybe we’ll bump into each other!
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
Only one 20 on your plan? Nice! You do so much anyway that I’m sure you don’t need to do any more than that!
kookyrunner says
Yeah last year I had 2 20 milers during training, but this time i had 2 18 milers and 1 20 miler – it works for me!
Nicole says
Sounds like an amazing long run!!! I’ve never extended a long run due to feeling good – usually I’m ready for them to be over!!! Haha. Although the long run is my favorite part of marathon training.
kookyrunner says
It was definitely an amazing feeling. Not sure if I’ll ever feel that way again lol
Elle says
Wahoo… the 20 miler done! You are so ready!
kookyrunner says
Thanks – I sure hope so!
Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says
Nice that you were in the groove and felt like extending your long run! Getting in extra miles in addition to a race is always tough for me, so it’s nice you’ll have only 5 instead of 7 to fit in. Good luck!
kookyrunner says
IT’s definitely a rare feeling so that’s why I wanted to take advantage of it! I really like adding mileage to a race for a long run!
Chaitali says
Sounds like a great week! And that’s a pretty good sign you were feeling so good for your long run that you went ahead and made it 20 π
kookyrunner says
I was very happy to make it to 20!
Rachel says
Stellar week, friend! What great workouts. And congrats on the 20! It’s always so nice to get that long run out of the way, isn’t it?
kookyrunner says
It’s SO nice to get that 20 miler out of the way – it gives me anxiety!
The Accidental Marathoner says
What a wonderful training week you’ve had! I’ve been majorly slacking, but as long as I finish, I am happy as a clam!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Linda! Hoping for a great race in Chicago for both of us π
Sharon says
Great job on your 20 miler!! It was a great confidence booster for me for the marathon so I know you are ready. You definitely got this marathon! Enjoy Rock’nRoll Philly! That was my first rock’n’roll race and it’s a good one!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Sharon. It was definitely a good confidence booster π I did RnR Philly last year and loved it! I’m excited to go back
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
You had a great week of workouts! You always seem to have a good balance of workouts with the spinning and boot camp. I used to love spinning until it got too much for my knees – my instructor was pretty intense.
I’m hoping I’ll be able to spectate during RNR Philly and cheer you on!
kookyrunner says
I do have to modify the resistance in my spinning class. I cant go too high on the resistance because then I notice that my knees start to hurt π
Hope to see you this weekend if you are spectating!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Great job on that 20 miler!! Those long runs always made me nervous prior to running them. Always happy to get them done!
Keep up the great workouts!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Lisa! You’re right, it’s always great to get those long runs out of the way.
Abby @BackatSquareZero says
A+
The one where I ran my long run and then my mid-week long run back to back because I am awesome, and then the next week bumped my 18 miler to a 20 miler because I felt so fabulous. Oh, and ran it all faster than I needed to.
Badass
kookyrunner says
LoL thanks Abby! π
Jessie says
Fantastic job on the 20 miler! Must feel good to have that done. Wishing you cool temps and fast feet at Chicago in just a few short weeks!!!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Jessie!
Sherry says
