I’m not gonna lie, this past week was pretty busy! I was in Chicago from Wednesday-Friday for a conference and it was jam packed with activities from early morning to late at night. I also had two races this weekend. Needless to say, I’m pretty tired! Luckily I was still able to keep up with my runs and workouts!
Monday 6/19
4 mile run. This run was pretty crappy, but I was happy to have it done.
Tuesday 6/20
Body works + abs class (60 minutes). Lots of lunges, squats, arms and core work.
Wednesday 6/21
Travel day to Chicago. That 4:30 am wake up was rough! 30 minute workout in the hotel gym. I was able to squeeze in a quick 30 minute workout in between conference sessions and night time activities.
Thursday 6/22
5 mile tempo run. Got up early to get this done before another long day at the conference.
Friday 6/23
Travel Day back home and rest day.
Saturday 6/24
Fairfield 5K (Recap later on this week)
Sunday 6/25
Fairfield Half Marathon (Recap later on this week)
Total Weekly Miles – 25.3
Total Training Cycle Miles – 95.8
Grade – B+
Whoa..what a crazy week1 I knew this week was going to be nuts but had no clue how busy I would be. I worked full days on Monday and Tuesday and then flew out to Chicago early Wednesday morning. This was the best conference I have ever attended, but it was jam packed with things to do. We had tons of sessions during the day to attend, but they also planned night time activities for us as well.
On Wednesday I went on a 90 minute architecture boat tour of Chicago and it was simply amazing! I learned SO much about the city and I was really impressed with our tour guide – she knew everything!!
On Thursday we were able to go to the Willis Tower for drinks and dinner. We were event able take a photo on the Skydeck!
Chicago was a whirlwind, but also a lot of fun. I really can’t wait to go back in October! I flew home on Friday and then had two races this weekend. I took on the Fairfield 5K and Half Marathon as part of the Lucas Challenge. I got extra bling, and extra shirt and a split of sparkling wine for completing the challenge. I ran the 5K on Saturday in the pouring rain, but the course was flat so it was pretty good. Today I ran the half marathon and it was not fun, lol. The course is hilly and that doesn’t mix well with the heat and blazing sun. Add in feeling dizzy and a random pain in my left butt check (don’t ask, lol) and it was a pretty difficult run.
I know that I didn’t eat well this week (the conference literally just kept feeding us) and I didn’t hydrate well enough at all. I also didn’t get a lot of sleep. I just felt “off” during the race so I’m sure it’s a mix of those things, plus traveling. I was treating this race as a training run for marathon training, so I’m just going to chalk it up to a bad run and move on. I am so thankful that my cutback week starts tomorrow – I need a little break!
Did you have a good week? Do you every feel “off” when you travel?
I’m linking up with Holly and Tricia for their Weekly Wrap. This week’s guest host is Zenaida so show her some love!
I’m also linking up with the Jess’s (Jess Runs Atlanta and Jess @ The Right Fits) and Courtney for their Training Recap Link Ups!

Good job getting in the runs that you did! It’s tough to keep on track when you are at a conference. Hope this next week is a little easier on you.
kookyrunner says
Thanks! This week will be “back to normal” and I’m looking forward to it!
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
Wow I did not realize that you did the 5k the day before the half! Impressive!
kookyrunner says
Thanks! The 5K felt fine despite the weather but the half…oh boy! lol
Madhuri says
I was in Chicago last month. That architectural tour was definitely solid. I felt I appreciated the buildings better after it. Haha. Good luck on Chicago! I love that city after my visit last month and hope to run there some day.
kookyrunner says
It’s such a beautiful city – I just love it there!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Traveling for work is always tough. Great job on getting your runs & workouts in! Hope this week is a little quieter for you 🙂
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle! I’m looking forward to a less eventful week!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I did some traveling for work this week too and it definitely threw me off! I never eat well and stay hydrated when I travel for work. You did great getting in all your workouts!
kookyrunner says
My diet last week was just awful – too many yummy food options!
Lesley says
I’d love to do an architectural tour! I did one in Milan with a bus company, but the boat sounds like a lot of fun. I don’t know much about the architecture in US cities.
kookyrunner says
I would highly recommend the boat tour, it was SO good and I feel like I learned so much more about the city.
Kimberly Hatting says
Chicago is beautiful! I’d love to take a boat ride and learn about the architecture because, as you probably know, I’m a total art geek LOL
kookyrunner says
You would really love the boat tour!!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I’m so glad you got to do some fun Chicago things while you were here. That boat tour is the bomb. And you got a feel for the city…that will help with the nerves on race day!!
PS. I got some tea in the mail this weekend. I cannot wait to try it! Thank you!
kookyrunner says
Chicago is such a fun city. I really enjoyed my time there last week because I feel like I learned SO much more about the city!
Hope you like the tea as much as I did!
Coco says
Traveling is rough, especially with a schedule that includes events at night – they can be fun but still exhausting. Plus doing a 5K before a half is a challenge too! Still, you got it done!
kookyrunner says
Yeah I think the late nights is ultimately what did me in, lol.
Zenaida Arroyo says
I did that tour a few years ago with my mom and loved it! My niece also did it a few years ago and was impressed with it. There are definitely so many hidden gems in Chicago! I am impressed with your traveling this week and your races this weekend. I would have been “No thanks, I am too tired.” You are determined!
Too bad I missed you this week but for sure in October!
kookyrunner says
I feel like I would need a solid 2 weeks in Chicago to explore everything that the city has to offer! I will definitely see you in October!
Chaitali says
You did a great job getting in those workouts during the conference! I always have a hard time getting that in when I travel for work… and you’re right, there is constant food and I always eat badly too. I’m impressed you did that photo being scared of heights!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Chaitali. I really enjoyed all the yummy food but now it’s time to get back on track, lol!
Teresa says
Oh gosh, traveling throws EVERYTHING off with my body …I mean, everything! Just crossing that finish line was a victory considering your week girl! Be proud of yourself and keep moving! 🙂
Those views of Chicago were ah-mazing!
kookyrunner says
LOL thanks so much Teresa! You’re right, I was just so happy to cross that finish line yesterday. I didn’t really care about the time at all.
Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
The tour sounds fun! Did you get to check out any of the marathon route?
kookyrunner says
I saw a few places on the marathon route in the distance when I was on the boat so that was pretty cool!
Sara says
Way to get all of your training in even with a busy work schedule! That pizza, though – Looked delicious!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sara! I’m a New Yorker and although I love my NY pizza, the Chicago pizza was very, very good!
Farrah says
Goodness, a 5k and a half!? o_o Great job! I’d love to visit Chicago someday! So many delicious eats and places to explore!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Farrah! I hope you get to visit Chicago one day, it really is great!
Karen says
Awesome job with your workouts and races this week! I would love to tour Chicago one day but I don’t think I’d be able to stand in that glass thing off the building. Just seeing your picture made my stomach do flips! Haha!
kookyrunner says
LOL, totally understand what you mean. I had to seriously psych myself out before doing it!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
I usually find it hard to work out when I travel, especially if its for work. I typically start out strong during the week but as the week goes on and I get more and more exhausted from the long hours, I tend to skip workouts. Totally know what you mean by being exhausted! Sounds like you got to explore a bit in Chicago though, that’s fun!
kookyrunner says
Same here! Also I think having the conference in the later half of the week didn’t help either because I didn’t have any days to re-cooperate because of my double race weekend, lol. But I really did enjoy my time in Chicago!
Marcia says
Mad props to you for getting in those workouts despite your busy work schedule. Looks like you had fun in the city. Very glad you enjoyed the cruise. It is awesome!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Marcia! Chicago is definitely a city with lots to see and do, and eat, lol
Michelle Rogers says
Wow, your trip to Chicago looks like a blast! I haven’t visited there yet but I would really like to. Awesome job with your runs! Way to go!
kookyrunner says
IT’s a great city – I hope you can visit one day!
Rachel says
Sounds like a great trip! A) when I was there we didn’t do anything because we were so tired. B) I had no idea Sears tower had changed to Willis tower until we were there. Lol. Oops!
kookyrunner says
LOL I didn’t now that either so don’t feel bad!
courtney @ eat pray run dc says
Kudos to you for getting it in while traveling! Sorry I missed you in Chicago. I am frequently figuring out how to get my workouts in while traveling so I know how tricky it can be. Hope you are getting some rest now that you are home!
kookyrunner says
It’s definitely a balancing act, that’s for sure! You always do a great job though!
The Accidental Marathoner says
I only JUST started training for the Chicago Marathon yesterday. YIKES! Kudos to you for getting your training in while traveling. I am SO bad at that. I’ve lived in Chicago my entire life and only recently did the architectural boat tour. Amazing! I’m glad you enjoyed your time here.
kookyrunner says
The boat tour was one of the highlights for my trip for sure!
Jessie says
Busy girl! Looks like a fun week though 🙂 Love that Chicago deep dish.
kookyrunner says
Busy, but definitely fun!
Anna @ Pipers Run says
Great job with your training. That view!! Wow!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Anna! The views on this trip were amazing!
Tracy says
Traveling AND racing two races in the same week?! You are a rockstar! Way to get it done (and get some well-deserved delicious food)!
kookyrunner says
Yup, definitely not the smartest idea lol
Mary Beth Jackson says
You packed a lot in one week lady! Whew! I do love conferences where they actually plan some activities and you are not just stuck in a hotel all day! You got in some great sights! Rest up!
kookyrunner says
Me too! I thought it was super nice of the conference to have activities for us to do in the evening.
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
You had quite a busy week. A quick trip and two races?!? Way to get it all done!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Kathryn!
Abby @BackatSquareZero says
For a crazy busy travel week and long work hours you still did amazing! You are always so consistent about working out.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Abby! I try to be consistent if I can, but I think last week and the races over the weekend are catching up to me. I napped after my run today. That’s rare for me because it was only a 2 mile run, lol.
Sharon says
Wow! Definitely sounds like a busy week! Cool that you went to Chicago! I loved the boat tour we took when were there and the deep dish pizza is sooo yummy! I miss it! Least you got a taste of Chicago before you go back in October! Great job and congrats on the 5K and half races you finished after a busy work week!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Sharon! It was a great few days in Chicago, although I wish I could have stayed a little bit longer!
Alaina @ The Simple Peach says
Way to go! Working out while traveling is always such a balance. I loved all your Chicago pictures. Now all I want is Chi pizza!
