Happy Sunday, and most importantly, HAPPY FALL!! I have been waiting for Fall since the first day of summer, lol. I will welcome the cooler temps, apple picking, boots, leather jackets and all things pumpkin with open arms π
After my crazy weekend of running, I took things super light this week. I also wanted to rest my hip so I didn’t do any runs during the week. I was hoping this would result in a nice run on Saturday but that didn’t exactly happen (more on that later). Here’s how my week went!
Monday, September 17
Yoga (45 minutes).
Since I was still walking like a baby duck, I decided to take a lunchtime yoga class. The gym at my office building is offering free yoga classes twice a week for a limited time, so I will surely take advantage!
Tuesday, September 18
Walking (30 minutes).
Still felt sore and uncomfortable, but I wanted to shake out the legs with a 30 minute power walk. My legs did feel better after the walk.
Wednesday, September 19
Boot Camp (60 minutes).
My legs finally felt back to normal (no soreness), so I decided to try my weekly boot camp class. Thankfully the instructor focused on arms and circuit so my legs didn’t get banged up too much!
Thursday, September 20
Walking (45 minutes).
Another afternoon walk and the weather was beautiful!
I also found these sneakers in the back of my closet – SCORE! I vaguely remember putting them back there in the middle of the summer, but had totally forgotten about them. Nothing like finding new sneakers!
Friday, September 21
Rest Day
Saturday, September 22
5 mile run.
No need to sugarcoat it, this run sucked. My headphones weren’t working so I had to do the run without music, which was complete torture for me. Kudos to all of the runners that don’t need music, but I’m just not that person, lol. My first 3 miles were great, actually better than great with much faster mile splits, but then the wheels fell off. My hip pain came back. I stoped to stretch twice, which made it feel better, but I was so disappointed by the end of my run.
Sunday, September 23
Spinning (60 minutes) + PT exercises (30 minutes).
Class went well. Figured this was a safe workout and wouldn’t aggravate my hip and I was right. I also spent about 30 minutes doing my PT routine from a few years ago, including work with resistance bands.
Total Weekly Mileage: 5 miles
Summary: 1 run, 1 spinning classes, 1 Boot Camp class, 1 Yoga class, 2 Walks
Grade This Week β B
I have some fun races lined up this Fall:
October 20 – SoNo Half Marathon in Norwalk, CT
October 27 – Wilmington Women’s Half Marathon in Wilmington, DE
November 3 – Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K in New York, NY
November 22 – Westchester Turkey Trot 5K in Valhalla, NY
December 1-2 – Rock n Roll San Antonio 5K and Half Marathon in San Antonio, TX
December 9 – Kiawah Island Golf Resort Half Marathon in Kiawah Island, SC
Because I have a few different races (and distances), I’m not going to be training for one race in particular. I just want to make sure that I can get through the races in one piece, and finish strong. As you can see, it’s going to be really hard to do any of these races if I don’t get my hip issue under control π This actually almost feels similar to an ITB injury I had a few years ago. I still have the PT program I followed for that so I think I’m going to try that program again and see it it helps. I know that I have weak glutes so I’m sure that’s part of the reason as well. On my Instagram post yesterday SO many people left really good suggestions on how to solve the issue so I’ll be looking into all of those as well. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that this doesn’t derail my Fall racing plans.
As I was sulking after my run yesterday, I decided to sign up for two more races. It totally makes sense to sign up for races when you’re fighting an injury, right? I signed up for the Rock n Roll San Antonio 5K and Half Marathon in December. I’ve never been to Texas so I’m looking forward to running and exploring the city and eating all the barbecue food I can find. I also signed up for the Hot Chocolate 15K race in Philly in April 2019. I did this race before and it was pretty fun, plus you get chocolate!
That’s it for this week – thanks for reading!
How was your week? Are you excited that we’re officially into the Fall season?

5 Things I’m Loving/Not Loving This Week
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I hope you can figure out whats going on with your hip! If you’ve had a similar issue before hopefully the PT will help. There are so many issues that could be going on with the hip so it can be a little tricky. But glute strengthening is always a good place to start! Still looks like you had a good week of workouts even if you only got to run once.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Lisa! And yea, it’s so tricky and so hard to pinpoint an exact reason. I’m not going to run a whole lot this week and keep focusing on my PT exercises and stretching.
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
It’s always nice when I find something in the back of my closet I forgot I had. Cute kicks! It surely does I’m Not feel like fall. I hate running without my headphones too.
kookyrunner says
Right?! It feels like hitting the jackpot π
Wendy says
When I get hip pain, I go back to basics. Clamshells and supermans. Monster walks and sidestepping with the resistance band. Fingers crossed for a quick resolution.
I so want to do San Antonio but we are getting a new electronic medical record system and we can’t take any time off in December (except the holidays). Booooo!
kookyrunner says
Oh yeah, I’m definitely going back to basics to help rehab my hip.
Oh no, that sucks about December π Hopefully you can get to do it next year! I’m looking forward to it and hope it’s a good course.
HoHo Runs says
Love those shoes. I need new Mizunos. I’ve had hip issues for several years now. Sometimes it gets worse (like now) otherwise it stays a dull manageable roar. I think it’s seriously just old age…like a bursitis or arthritis. Does it hurt when you aren’t running? Mine does. I did zero PT this week and it felt better. That has be scratching my head. I’ll be interested to hear what you are doing and if it helps. Thanks for linking!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Holly! They felt okay for my 5-miler, but I need to see if they can handle long runs.
Right now I’m focusing on doing a lot of stretching, foam rolling and PT exercises. Hoping that I’ll see some improvements after a few weeks.
Deborah Brooks says
Ugh so sorry that your hip is acting up again. Thatβs a spot Iβve not had bother me so no advice but lots of well wishes coming your way. Take care of yourself
kookyrunner says
Thanks for the positive vibes and well wishes!
Lesley says
Take care of that hip. I make sure I stretch my hip flexors each day so those don’t get tight. When I was first dealing with ITB, basically my entire right leg was tight. I may not do yoga, and stretching every day helps a lot.
kookyrunner says
Totally understand what you mean about the leg feeling tight. I want to start doing some stretches as soon as I wake up in the morning. Hoping that will really help.
Cari says
I’m with you on looking forward to fall as soon as summer hits. Good luck rehabbing your hip. Mine flared this weekend too.
What a great selection of cities and races
kookyrunner says
I just love running in colder weather! Thanks – I’m hoping that my hip gets better with some consistent PT work.
Coco says
First I was shaking my head at how you went to boot camp as soon as you felt better and then you signed up for two more races! I’ll credit you with being optimistic instead of crazy. π All your races sound like fun.
kookyrunner says
LOL! I don’t make the best decisions all the time, that’s for sure.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I hope your ART doc has some answers for you. While my hip isn’t fabulous I will say that consistent PT works has made a difference!
You’ve got some great races lined up! I’m so jealous you’re doing San Antonio! I so wanted to get there this year, but don’t think I can swing it. Does Philly Hot Chocolate mean you’re passing on possibly doing Cherry Blossom in April – are they the same weekend?
kookyrunner says
I’m hoping for the same result as I start ding those PT moves again. I hope that consistency will be super helpful.
I just added San Antonio over the weekend. I have a ton of vacation time to use up at work so I figured why not add another racecation!
Oh crap, I forgot about the Cherry Blossom race. Technically I could do both since the hot chocolate race is on April 6 and CB is on April 7.
Kimberly Hatting says
Umm…..I just saw the info about San Antonio this weekend, and I’m considering it LOL AS I said in your Insta post, try the side planks…you have to use your hips to hold the pose, so that may help with strengthening them.
kookyrunner says
LOL so we will possibly have a third #KimMeetup this year?! I’m all about that! I registered for the races and booked the hotel but still need to book my flights
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
You still have quite a hefty racing schedule for the remainder of the year – PT exercises sound like a good and necessary plan. I’ve been MIA in Berlin so heading to read your recaps now… hope you feel more normal soon!
kookyrunner says
Yeah, I’m hoping that I will be able to get my hip crankiness under control so that I can actually enjoy my upcoming races. Fall is my favorite racing season!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I’ve wanted to do kiawah for a while but I’m pretty sure that’s not happening this year.
I almost did the philly hot chocolate one year, but April is such an iffy month!
Sounds like you have lots of fun things on your calendar. I hate the shorter days but am definitely digging cooler weather!
kookyrunner says
I hope that you get to do Kiawah! I’ll be sure to report back on it once I run in December.
I did the Hot Chocolate Philly race a few years ago and it was kind of cold and rainy – hopefully next year is better!
Shathiso says
Sorry about the 5-miler and hope you figure out what’s going on with your hip soon. My husband as an unexplained injury too, behind his knee area and his doctor can’t seem to figure out what’s going on. I love the races you have lined up – I always find that races have a way of keeping me motivated.
kookyrunner says
Thanks – I’m hoping to get to the root of the problem soon.
Sorry to hear about your husband’s injury. I hope the doctor is able to figure out what’s wrong eventually.
Liz Dexter says
Sorry about the hip – will a bit of swan / pigeon pose help that, and some IT band rolling? I do hope so. We are well into autumn now, heating on for our morning showers (we have a stupid big bathroom) and it’s chilly most days. Hooray!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Liz. I’ve been doing a lot more stretching, foam rolling and PT exercises this weekend. I’m going to continue that and hope that I see some improvements.
Marcia says
You are proof that one does not need running to have a fun, active week. How fun to find new shoes in the back of the closet! Score! It has cooled here and it is fabulous!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Marcia! Yes finding the new sneakers may have been the highlight of my week haha.
Chaitali says
Ugh, sorry about the Saturday run not going well π I hate running without music too. My headphones died during my Saturday run but at least I only had half a mile left to go at that point so it wasn’t too bad.
kookyrunner says
I give so much credit to runners that don’t need music but I just can’t do it!
Sandra D Laflamme says
Wow! You have some great races lined up. But booo for hip pain. Fingers crossed that does not continue to ail you!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sandra. I’m hoping that it goes away soon.
Hannah says
LOL at walking like a baby duck – that’s how I feel today! I hope the PT program helps with your hip pain. It’s tough when you’re not sure what’s causing it.
kookyrunner says
Oh no! Hope your legs feel better by the end of that day. That’s not a good feeling!
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
I’m definitely excited about Fall – I’m just sitting over here waiting for the weather to catch up. HA! And I’m not sipping a PSL while waiting. I’ll take my coffee plain, with heavy cream or half & half, please and thank you. LOL
Man, I hope you get that hip issue worked out! I’ve definitely been there, registering for things while I’m injured as a push to help me focus on getting better. I totally get it. LOL
I can’t even imagine running WITH music in my ears. I’d miss out on all the sounds of the world! (Although, TBH, when I started back into running, we lived in a kinda sketchy area and it was necessary for me to have both ears available for creepers in the dark. Now, I’m just used to it. I actually prefer it.)
kookyrunner says
I actually don’t drink coffee, but do enjoy the occasional PSL. I haven’t had one yet this season though. i’m waiting for the weather to change over for good.
I’m doing a lot of PT moves, stretching and foam rolling to get this hip under control.
Jenn says
Fall feels pretty much the same as summer around here LOL! I have that exact Run Happy tank! I love it!
Cute new-again shoes!
I can run with and without music. I make sure to do a fair bit of both just in case I get stuck one way or the other. It’s harder without, for sure, but sometimes, it’s good for me to just listen to nature and my thoughts. Sometimes.
kookyrunner says
LOL I was wondering if you see a vast decrease in temperatures in Florida but I guess not!
I give you so much credit for being able to run without music. i could probably do it for a mile or two but anything after that feels like torture lol.
Jessie says
I hope you can figure out whats going on with your hip! PT exercises will hopefully help…I’ve had a similar pain before that was somehow IT band related. Weak glutes. Same ol’ story π
Love those recovered treasure shoes!
kookyrunner says
Yup, I have a feeling the hip pain is connected to weak glutes and my IT band – sigh π I really though I was done with that injury since it hasn’t flared up in a few years.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Looks like you had a great week of training last week and that you’ve got some fun races on your fall calendar!
Like you, I’m ready for fall. I was looking forward more to blue skies and crisp days, rather than gray skies, rain, and the high humidity we’re getting…
kookyrunner says
I am really looking forward to the leaves changing colors and the cool temperatures.
Angela Cardamone @marathonsandmotivation.com says
I hope it’s nothing too serious with your hip! I have had ongoing hip issues and just started a strength and pilates program to help!
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I’ve been doing a lot of PT exercises this week and hoping that helps
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Wow, you ha e quite the lineup of races for this fall! I love the variety of distances that youβll be running, and the different locations that youβll be running in. I think your goal to just finish all of them in one piece is a very smart way to approach them.
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I am happy that I will get to run in some new states.
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
Sorry about your hip! I really hope that heals quickly and you can keep training for all those fall races! It looks like a great lineup!
I’m one of “those people” who doesn’t need headphoness…lol. I really prefer running without music and tuning out. I even do my 20 miler without music!
kookyrunner says
Wow a 20 miler with no music? I would go nuts! I don’t know how you do it but I give you all the credit in the world!
The Accidental Marathoner says
Fall is my favorite time of year! I am still in Europe and haven’t run since the Berlin Marathon on the 16th (though I have been walking TONS). I’m looking forward to getting home and getting one or two runs in before the Chicago Marathon – which is just one week from Sunday!!!
kookyrunner says
Wow! You’re a marathon running machine! I hope that you are going to take some time off after Chicago.
Hope you’re enjoying Europe!
Farrah says
I hope your hip feels better soon and that they figure out what’s going on with it!
I love the color of your shoes! <3 It's my favorite shade of blue! π
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I haven’t run this week and I’m been doing a lot of PT exercises, foam rolling and stretching so I’m hoping that all pays off.
