Happy Sunday! I’m writing up my recap today from sunny San Antonio. I arrived here on Friday for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series weekend. San Antonio is a cute city and I’ve enjoyed my time here very much. We don’t fly out until tomorrow morning so at least I get to enjoy the city for another night!
I did my typical workouts last week. I didn’t really run during the week as I knew I would be running a good amount of miles this weekend. Here’s how my week went.
Monday, November 26
1 mile run + elliptical (15 mins) + 30 min walk
I always appreciate it when hotels have nice gyms and this one did not disappoint. It was my last day in DC so after the gym I went to a museum with friends before heading home.
Tuesday, November 27
Spinning (45 minutes).
Since I ran a race on Thanksgiving I wasn’t able to do the Turkey Burn spin class with Robin so I was happy to catch it on demand after work. Boy did it whoop my butt!
I also did a crazy thing and threw my name in the ring for next year’s Chicago Marathon. As you know, I have unfinished business with the race and would like to go back to redeem myself. I’ll find out the lottery results this month!
Wednesday, November 28
Boot Camp (60 minutes).
We did circuits and it was great because it helped the time go by faster.
Thursday, November 29
Unexpected Rest Day.
Some hip and knee soreness made me skip my run but I still got in a good walk.
Friday, November 30
Travel Day/RnR San Antonio Expo.
It was a long travel day. We had to fly from NY to Atlanta and then Atlanta to San Antonio. I woke up at 4am so I was pretty beat after traveling most of the day and then going to the Expo as soon as we checked into the hotel. We didn’t take many photos at the expo but we scored this cool one in front of the huge sneaker.
Saturday, December 1
Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K – recap coming next week!
I ran the 5K and my mom ran the 10K. After the race I met up with the We Run Social and Pro Compression crews for a photo.
Sunday, December 2
Rock n Roll San Antonio Half Marathon – recap coming next week!
I wasn’t in half marathon shape but happy to report that I finished the race upright lol.
Total Weekly Mileage: 16.3 miles
Summary: 3 runs, 1 spinning class, 2 walks, 1 boot camp class.
Grade This Week ā B+
Another week of training in the books! I gave myself a B+ because there were things I could have done better, including scheduling time for my workouts. I’m off work for a week starting tomorrow so I’ll get to run a lot of errands, finish up my holiday shopping and get in some morning workouts. It will definitely be a week to get back on track.
I was having some aches and pains this week that made me skip Thursday’s run. I feel like my body is falling apart! Every week it’s something new and then something that I thought was gone will come back. It’s super frustrating but I have an idea of some things that I need to start doing to maybe help this problem. For starters, I’m going to be focusing more on leg workouts in hopes that it will make my legs stronger. I know that it will take some time and that’s okay with me.
San Antonio was a lot of fun this weekend. I wasn’t a huge fan of either of the race courses (5K/Half Marathon), but the city was really cool, especially the Riverwalk. Plus everyone here is super friendly! I would definitely come back if my schedules allows next year.
How was your week? How did you close out the month of November? Do you have any leg strengthening exercises that you recommend?
Iām linking up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.

I love San Antonio! And I’d love to do the half there. I’m glad you had such a good time!
I decided not to put my name in for Chicago. It was such a hard decision! I just don’t think my body could handle the miles. So I’ll be there to cheer you all on!
kookyrunner says
I hope you get to do the half there one year!
I totally understand what you mean about Chicago. But one plus for me getting in will be the chance to get to see you again!
Kimberly Hatting says
Leg strengthening exercises? (cough cough) Stairs! I do the routine squats and lunges, etc., but the stairs are my most effective option. Obviously, my legs are quite a bit longer than yours, but when I take the steps “by three’s” it’s a very slow, controlled balance move that works the quads as you step, then it works the hamstrings as you lift. Maybe doing the steps by two’s would have a similar effect for you? Doing them with hand weights would UP the intensity with the increased resistance. Something to consider š Wish I could have done SA with you and Mom š
kookyrunner says
Thanks for the recommendation on the leg strengthening exercises. Sometimes I do the stair climber machine at the gym but I could definitly incorporate more stair workouts at home!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
I have never been to San Antonio. I cannot wait to hear all about your races. Congrats to you and your mom
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Deborah!
Lesley says
I’ve been thinking of doing the 10k at some point. Did your mom like the course? I’ve only been in San Antonio’s airport, so I don’t count it as visiting the city.
kookyrunner says
My mom said the course was flat but it was a little boring (they ran by a lot of buildings but not anything fun).
Coco says
Can’t wait to hear more about San Antonio! You had a loooong travel day to get there! Love that big colorful shoe!
kookyrunner says
Yes that travel day was SOOO long, but thankfully we had a direct flight back home.
Sherry says
Congrats on the 5k and half marathon! Nice bling! Cool your mom ran the 10k! Hope you get into Chicago!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sherry!
Liz Dexter says
Wow, well done on your racing weekend and yay to your mum, too! I have been given squats and lunges for leg strength and leg raises with a band round my ankles for hip strength if that helps. The lunges will do similar to Kimberley’s stairs, though.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Liz! It was a fun weekend š I’m taking notes on all of the leg exercises recommended to me. Hoping this will help in the long run!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
San Antonio is such a great city! I bet it would be fun to do a race there. Thats exciting that you put your name in for Chicago! Great week of workouts.
kookyrunner says
The race course was a little boring but it’s pretty flat so great for a PR!
Laurie says
I have never raced there, but I loved visiting San Antonio. You did a lot for a “rest” week! Looking forward to reading the race recap. Good luck with Chicago. I hope you get in!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Laurie. I enjoyed my weekend in San Antonio but now it’s back to reality!
chaitali says
Sounds like you fit a lot into the week! I’ve never been to San Antonio but I keep hearing that it’s a fun city. Good luck with the lottery for Chicago š
kookyrunner says
If you get the chance to visit San Antonio I’m sure you would love it!
Jenny Albertson says
Looks like a great week! I love doing squats and lateral leg raises!
kookyrunner says
Thanks for the suggestion on the leg exercises!
Sandra D Laflamme says
Way to go with your racing! Sounds like you have been having a lot of fun running and how cool to meet up with the We Run Social crew! Good luck with your Chicago Entry, Fingers crossed for you!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Sandra! I love the WRS crew. It’s always nice to meet up with runners!
Darlene says
Lucky you. I was in San Antonio for a conference years before I became a runner. Loved it there.
Wow! Chicago. Good Luck. I’m still contemplating NYC. But I have time…
kookyrunner says
I hope that you decide to run NYC – it’s such an amazing race!
Anna @ Piper's Run says
Fingers crossed for your Chicago entry! Great job with your race on the weekend!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Anna!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Finishing your race upright is a good thing! Congrats! I love how you and your mom travel together to races. Sounds so fun!
kookyrunner says
It’s a lot of fun and it’s how we see different parts of the country lol
HoHo Runs says
I hope you enjoyed your visit to San Antonio. It’s been a number of years, but I remember liking the Riverwalk and Mexican Market. It looks like a sunny day for a race. Was it warm? Good luck with Chicago! Thanks for linking!
kookyrunner says
It was warm but not too hot so I was thankful for that. You know how I feel about the heat lol. Also it wasn’t humid at all which helped a lot.
Farrah says
I wish it were sunny here–it’s gotten so cold! Congrats on the 5k and the half marathon! :O!
kookyrunner says
I actually prefer the cold so I was happy it wasn’t too hot, lol
Jenn says
Great job! I kind of laugh a little that you are calling this fall racing, when it is so very wintery where we are. Or at least, compared to what we are used to. Then again, we don’t get much in the line of fall.
Sorry you didn’t love the San Antonio courses! I would have loved to have run that one! San Antonio is pretty cool and would be nice to visit as part of a racecation!
Weighted calf raises are one of my go to leg strengthening exercises.
kookyrunner says
LoL right?! I still can’t believe that “technically” we’ll still in Fall until later on this month. We’ve already had snow and ice here in CT. We really didn’t have much of a Fall at all.
Yup, although the course was a little boring, the city was not – I enjoyed my visit!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
The Riverwalk is so awesome! There were rumblings over the years of doing something similar in Austin, but it’s never happened.
I’m sorry the courses weren’t better; that’s a bummer. But finishing upright is definitely a win!
You know I hear you about the darn aches & pains. š
kookyrunner says
I really loved the Riverwalk! So many different shops and restaurants – it was great. If I go back to San Antonio I would stay closer to that area. My hotel was only about a mile away but it would be nice to stay closer.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
OTOH, if you’re not running a half, the extra walking is good. š I haven’t been there in so long! The last time I was in Austin was 8 years ago, and who knows when we actually had gone to SA?
It’s definitely fun & glad you enjoyed your weekend.
Esther says
Ohh, I hope you get into Chicago!
I ran SA a few years ago! Is there still a hill to climb at the end before the finish line?
It is a fun city. It is where my husband grew up, so we go there pretty often.
If you run next year I would love to come cheer you on š
kookyrunner says
There was a pretty steep hill at the end of mile 10. I remember that being the biggest hill but I do think there was an incline before the finish.
Jessie says
I have only done Rock n Roll San Diego and Rock n Roll Seattle, and with that, its been many years- do you get a discount for doing so many of them? Do you like the courses and organization?
Sounds like a fun weekend and nice that you had the extra day to explore š
kookyrunner says
I would love to do RnR Seattle! I did RnR San Diego a few years ago and loved it. I’m part of the Rock N Blog team so I get up to 10 races for free. Although I didn’t like this course, I have enjoyed their courses in other cities (San Diego, Chicago, Philly). The organization is going through some changes this year so it’s been a little rough but I hope it improves for net year.
Cari says
Yay on finishing upright. <3 your socks
And that giant shoe is awesome
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Cari!
