Another week done! How was your first week of October? Besides the crazy weather, this week was pretty good. Let’s discuss!
Monday, October 1
3 mile run + PT exercises (30 minutes).
I used run/walk intervals for the run and it went well with no hip pain.
Tuesday, October 2
Spinning (30 minutes) + PT exercises (30 minutes)
Originally I had planned to go over to the gym for some strength training but we were expecting really bad storms so I opted to workout in the basement. I’m glad I did because the rain, thunder and lightning that evening was CRAZY!
Wednesday, October 3
Boot Camp (60 mins).
My arms were sore all week but finally felt back to normal on Wednesday. Thank goodness because the instructor killed us on upper body during class – ouch!
Thursday, October 4
4 mile run + PT exercises (30 mins).
No complaints for this run. Took the pace nice and easy but didn’t take any walk breaks since it was a shorter run. I also went to my ART doctor that afternoon. He did a lot of work on my hip and gave me some additional drills to do at home. My hip was so sore that night that I couldn’t sleep on my right side – but it’s fine now!
Friday, October 5
Yoga (30 minutes).
Felt good to get a nice stretch.
Saturday, October 6
9 mile run + PT exercises (30 mins).
I’m convinced that the universe was against me for this run. Here are a few reasons why:
1. Got 5 hours of sleep total (kept waking up every hour).
2. My period started unexpectedly (always a fabulous thing..not!)
3. Stomach issues that required a bathroom break but…
4. All bathrooms in the park were closed
The first 4 miles of the run were crap due to all the reasons above. Luckily I run pass a Dunkin Donuts every week and I was able to use the bathroom there. After the bathroom break, the rest of the run was much better and the hip pain was minimum. Originally I was aiming for 10 but called it at 9 because mentally I was over it. I spent the rest of the day with my heating pad and lots of tea.
Sunday, October 7
Strength Training (50 mins) + Spinning (50 mins).
Sundays usually mean double workouts and today was no different. I also did a few PT exercises once I got home.
After my workout, I went downtown for the 1st Annual That’s Amore Italian Festival. It was small, but they had lots of delicious food. I absolutely love Italian food so I’ve been looking forward to this weeks!
Total Weekly Mileage: 16 miles
Summary: 3 runs, 2 spinning classes, 1 Bootcamp Class, 1 Strength Training Class, 1 Yoga class, 3 Walks
Grade This Week ā A
I’m proud of myself for getting in my full PT routine almost everyday. What really helped me was doing my PT exercises as soon as I woke up in the morning so that I could get them done before going to work.
Overall my runs during the work felt fine. It’s weird because I don’t feel any pain when I run on the treadmill, but I do when I run outside. I’ve been doing my PT exercises, stretching and foam rolling a lot so I do think that it is helping. The walk breaks during my run also helped too. Although Saturday’s run started off really rocky, it had nothing to do with my hip so I’m happy for that, lol.
If you read my post earlier this week (October 2018 Goals), you know that I’m currently in a StepBet game which means I need to find creative ways to get in more steps throughout the day. I made a deal with myself that I would get in 30 minutes of activity during the workday (usually during lunch). I sit all day at work and although I get up every hour to move around, I know I still need more activity. I was able to get in a 30 minute walk Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I worked from home on Thursday, but still walked to the supermarket during my lunch break and on Friday I had the day off from work but walked downtown to meet a friend for lunch.
I’m happy with the progress that I made this week and hope it continues.
That’s it for this week – thanks for reading!
How was your week? Do you have any races coming up this month?
In Case You Missed It
Kimberly Hatting says
Hey, how about finding a stairway if you’re needing 30 minutes of extra cardio…? (that’s what this Kim would do LOL) You had a great week, and you still pressed on and got in those 9 miles. Good job!
kookyrunner says
A stairway would definitely work, but since I have to go back to my desk after work, I need something that won’t leave me a sweaty mess LOL
Wendy says
Looks like a good week to me. Ugh to the period pain. That was so bad for me. I don’t love menopause but I sure don’t miss my period!
You’ve got some yummy food porn there…good thing the cannoli isn’t pointed the other way… :p I’m so immature…
kookyrunner says
I told my best friend that I might throw myself a party when I hit menopause. Period cramps are the worst!
You laugh but I thought about that when I posted the photo LOL.
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
I love how you are mixing up your workouts with more strength training and cycling. You really look fantastic! I would be all over that Italian festival
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I’m trying to mix it up and still have effective workouts. This hip issues was totally unexpected but just trying to do the best that I can.
The Italian festival was great! I hope they bring it back next year.
HoHo Runs says
The StepGame sounds fun. I sit so much during the day. I need something to get me up and moving around. It’s just so hot around here still that I can’t take a walk during lunch…without returning to work covered in sweat. I hope your hip continues to improve. Thanks for linking!
kookyrunner says
Totally understand! I can’t do anything too strenuous because I still have to return to my desk, lol. Can you try walking laps around your floor? At least that way you’re still in a cool environment.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Great job keeping up with the PT exercises! It sounds like they are helping. Sorry your Saturday run was a struggle. I hate when that happens!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Lisa! Saturday started off crappy but at least it ended well.
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
I love street festivals! Sadly I don’t think Chicago will have many more this year. Good work on keeping up with PT!
kookyrunner says
Me too! We don’t really have a lot of them in my city so this one was a welcomed treat.
Lesley says
That Italian festival looks so yummy! I went to a Greek festival years ago and enjoyed the food.
kookyrunner says
I would love to go to a Greek festival – so much yummy food!
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
Interesting that your hip doesn’t bother you on the treadmill. There are potentially a few reasons for that. Have you mentioned that to your PT? That may be worth bringing up.
Oh man, I could eat my weight in Italian food! Probably a good thing I was nowhere near that festival. haha
kookyrunner says
Yup I bought that up with my ART doctor on Thursday and he had the same reaction as you. It’s just really, really strange that it doesn’t hurt on the treadmill.
That festival was so good! I actually showed a lot of restraint and didn’t eat my weight in pasta lol
Laurie says
You are making great progress. Glad to hear your miles are up, even if you did have to cut Saturday’s run short. Way to go!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Laurie!
angela @ happy fit mama says
Ok. There must have something funky going on with the universe on Saturday because my run was just plain horrible too. And I’ve heard the same thing from probably 6 other people. What was with that day?!?! Congrats on a solid week and keeping up with PT exercises. It’s easy to let those things slide!
kookyrunner says
Wow really?! Okay then yeah, there was definitely something in the air on Saturday! Hopefully it was just a one time thing.
Coco says
I have a hard time breaking away from my desk at work — good for you for getting up and getting out! I hope your hip settles down for good. Sorry about the cursed long run, but I’m impressed you pushed through for 9 miles.
kookyrunner says
It’s so hard to get away from the desk, but what I do now is block off the time in my calendar. That way I treat it as a meeting and something I have to do.
chaitali says
That weekend run definitely sounds tough š But it sounds like all your other workouts during the week went well with minimum hip pain, that’s great news!
kookyrunner says
Yes, thankfully the other workouts were good! I’m trying to erase Saturday’s run from my memory lol
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
You had a great week! I like that you do your PT exercises first thing – maybe that’s what I need to do! I get up at 5 during the week and it’s such a drag to get myself ramped up, smh!
Great job toughing out that long Saturday run. I’m glad your hip wasn’t causing you trouble, but I hope you’re feeling better!
kookyrunner says
Yes, definitely try to do them when you wake up in the morning! I do the exercises while watching the news. I usually iron my clothes and pack my lunch the night before so that saves me time in the morning.
Michelle Rogers says
Glad that you are healing and feeling better! It’s amazing that you’re able to keep up your training like that. Have a great week! š
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Michelle!
Jenn says
Awesome! I would love to go to an Italian festival like that! We are Italian (mostly), and oh, the food! And wine! And food! Although, I don’t love canolis. Go figure.
I have a 5K this weekend. I’m excited because it’s in California, but not the race I wanted to run. It will be fun, regardless.
You had another great week! Proud of you for getting in all your PT!
kookyrunner says
Italian food is my absolute favorite!
Have a great time in California this weekend!
Hannah says
Ooh, that food festival sounds amazing! I’m glad your hip seems to be getting better.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Hannah!
Cari says
Note to self: don’t read you when hungry š
That festival looked fun
kookyrunner says
The Italian festival was awesome!
Sandy says
Looks like you have a great mix of running and cross training! That Italian festival looks fun, yummy food!
kookyrunner says
The Italian festival was fun and there was so much great food!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Although I am beyond periods — which I’m quite thankful for, although wondering if some of my recent weight issues have to do with menopause, even though I’m 2 years into it — and ugh! I’ve had that happen. And it’s the worst when the bathrooms are closed for the season! Glad you were able to find one.
I kind of wondered why today’s run felt so hard til I check the weather after I finished, already 70 . . . I just hate the back & forth crap. Give me summer or give me fall already!
kookyrunner says
I still don’t understand why the bathrooms are closed for the season since people still use the park for walking, biking and running all year round AND there are still pop warner football games in the park every weekend. It just baffles me!
Don’t get me started on the “heatwave” we’re having this week. I’m so over this nonsense!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Many of the places I run are bike paths. People definitely still use them, but they’re not parks so no team stuff going on.
The park I run at regularly does keep a bathroom open year round (although closes another one).
Luckily I didn’t need a bathroom this morning, because I chose a different part of the bike path with no bathrooms. Only there were still portapotties there from last weekend’s race — but I didn’t need them, thankfully.
Teresa says
I’d be all over that Italian food festival too! I really think I was born Italian and switched at birth! Lol
I guess not having to deal with unexpected periods is the one good thing about menopause …I haven’t had to think about that stuff in a long time! š
kookyrunner says
LOL me too! It’s ridiculous how much I love Italian food.
I’m thinking of throwing myself a party when I hit menopause. No longer having a period sounds amazing to me right now lol
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
You did a great job with your PT exercises! Sorry for the struggles on your long run, but overall you had a great week! Hope your hip continues to feel better!
kookyrunner says
hanks Michelle!
Shathiso says
We are doing an Italian Restaurant after my Goal Race. š Haven’t been but it has rave reviews!
So glad the hip seems to be showing some improvement – well done on putting in those PT exercises, not the most fun I am sure but you’re getting it done! And you did so well to get that 9-miler done, good grief!!! Just one of those issues would have been bad enough!
kookyrunner says
Hope you enjoy all the yummy food after your goal race!
The PT exercises are so so boring but I know I have to be consistent.
Liz Dexter says
A great week, well done! Doing your pt exercises first thing is definitely the way to go. Sorry about the 9 miler but its good to share these things.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Liz! i’m hoping that my run on Saturday goes much better than my 9 miler lol
