Today I’m participating in the Friday Five link up with Courtney from Eat Pray Run DC, Mar from Mar on the Run and Cynthia from You Signed Up For What?!.
Today is “Free Friday” so I thought I would list 5 books I plan on reading this Summer. You see, I start my training for the NYC Marathon on June 6th. I’m super-duper nervous but I know that knowledge is power so I plan on doing a lot of reading this summer and into the Fall. Some will be running based and some will focus on nutrition – I think that’s a great balance.
The Runner’s Brain: How to Think Smarter to Run Better
I’m really excited to start reading this book. I struggle A LOT with the mental aspect of running. I have a lot of self doubt about my abilities, especially when it comes to distance running. I hope this book will help me with this because I know it has a huge affect on my running.
Unprocessed: My City-Dwelling Year of Reclaiming Real Food
It’s no secret that our food system is pretty out of whack, so I’m always trying to find out more about our food, where it comes from, etc. I’m looking forward to reading all about the author’s journey and research to see what makes food processed. I also recently purchased the Performance plan from InsideTracker (trying to learn all I can about my body before starting training) and I know this book, combined with their recommendations, should be a great fit.
A Race Like No Other: 26.2 Miles Through the Streets of New York
I’ve heard that the NYC Marathon is an incredible experience. I’m sure that it’s hard to describe in words, but I’m looking forward to reading the author’s account of the race. If anything, this will get me even more excited for the race!
Running a Marathon for Dummies
Well this is pretty self explanatory. I’ve got 22 weeks to figure out this whole marathon training thing and I’m pretty sure this book will help, and probably provide a few laughs.
The Athlete’s Fix: A Program for Finding Your Best Foods for Performance & Health
I’m all about finding the correct foods to help me become a stronger runner, and to help me feel better overall. I’m pretty sure I probably have some food sensitivities so this book might help me identify some of those issues.
Have you read any of these books? If so, let me know in the comments!

I loved the book about the NYC Marathon and read it before my race last fall. It has some great information and is an easy read. You will like it. I have not read any of the other books on your list, but would be interested in The Athlete’s Fix since my diet is not the best.

I need to start reading again and I HAVE The Athlete’s Fix just need to find time to dive into it a little further!

Yes the biggest issue is finding time to read!

I’m looking for some good books this summer but hoping for some fiction books to just get lost in (although that book about the NYC marathon looks interesting).
kookyrunner says
Such a good point – I should probably through in a few non fiction books as well!

I loved The Runner’s Brain. The NYCM book looks good too. My blog book club has some good selections too, if you have time to add a few more. Regardless, link up with us with one of your books!

Thanks Wendy and I will definitely link up!

Unprocessed sounds great! I like books about people’s life changes so I can live vicariously through their life decisions. 😉

Me too! It makes me feel like if they did it, I can do it too!

Hello. I stumbled across your blog by reading someone else’s blog! I really liked a Race Like No Other and the Runner’s Brain. These all sound like great reads! I think you might be interested in reading Boston Bound, too. It’s about overcoming mental barriers in running. There’s more info on my blog if you want to know more. Happy reading!

Hi Elizabeth – Welcome! Thanks for the book recommendation. I will no doubt add that to my list of books to read this year!

You’ve got a great collection of books to read! Unprocessed sounds really interesting, along with the Athlete’s Fix. I need to follow your footsteps and get mentally prepared for marathon training!

I think being mentally prepared will be almost just as important, or more important, than being physically prepared. I’m so nervous about the marathon so I hope these books will help calm my nerves!
