Sleep. We all need it, but for some of us it’s a hard concept. While I have no trouble falling asleep, staying asleep is a real issue for me. It’s been this way for me since I was in high school. I’ve tried a few different things – herbal tea, warm milk, melatonin, etc. Those things will work for a little while, but then it always seems like I’m back to square one.
I was offered the opportunity to try Nuun Rest when I was a few weeks into my marathon raining cycle. One of my goals for this cycle was to prioritize rest, so this seemed like the perfect product!
What is Nuun Rest?
“Nuun Rest is filled with ingredients that help to calm your busy mind and melt the tension away from overworked muscles. Nuun Rest helps reduce exercise induced inflammation, supports overall muscle relaxation and aids relaxation responses”
What do I like about Nuun Rest?
There are 3 key reasons I really like Nuun Rest:
1.) The key components are tart cherry juice and magnesium – both products that I already use and trust.
2.) No artificial sweeteners and non-GMO verified ingredients – I dislike when beverages are overly sweet so I’m glad that these products don’t have artificial sweeteners.
3.) Each tablet has 10 calories and 1 gram of sugar – Absolutely love that the tablets are low in sugar and calories.
How do I use Nuun Rest?
Unlike Nuun Sport, you only mix Nuun Rest with 4-6 ounces of water and it’s best to use in hot water (this makes it a little more calming). I try to drink it about an hour before bedtime. By bedtime my body feels much more relaxed (less lower body tension) and I’m able to fall asleep, and most importantly, stay asleep. It really does help to calm me down since I normally have 10 different thoughts running through my head at any given time, especially at night! Currently I only use it a few nights a week, but I could see using this daily with no issues.
Nuun Rest currently comes in two different flavors – Blackberry Vanilla and Lemon Chamomile. Both flavors are good but I preferred the Blackberry Vanilla – it wasn’t overly sweet but still had a fruity flavor.
One thing I do want to point out is that Nuun Rest is not an electrolyte replacement like Nuun Sport.

Great review! I was thinking of checking them out and I did not know you could use them in warm water as well.
kookyrunner says
Yup! They actually suggest using warm water vs cold water.

I should check this out! I’m not a fan of the regular Nuun (too “fizzy” for my taste), but this might be a good option for evening, since I would be drinking it for a different purpose (ie-not rehydrating in a heated state from exercise LOL). Thanks for the info!

I can’t drink the regular Nuun (hurts my tummy), but the Nuun Rest doesn’t mess with my stomach at all.
Liz Dexter says
Oh, cool – like Kim, I find normal Nuun has a fizz I can still taste HOURS after making it up, but the cherry juice in this would be a winner for me. I do drink cherry juice anyway but the magnesium sounds good for those tired muscles.
kookyrunner says
Yeah I can’t take in the regular Nuun because it messes with my tummy, but the Nuun Rest doesn’t bother me at all, and no aftertaste either.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I actually haven’t tried it yet, mainly because one of my issues is going to the bathroom in the middle of the night & not being able to get back to sleep — so drinking water right before bed is usually not great for me.
That said, I love everything Nuun!
Most of the time I sleep pretty good . . . until I don’t.
kookyrunner says
That makes sense! No fun waking up to use the bathroom and then not being able to go back to sleep 🙁

Interesting post to know a new item.
As I am retired I have all the time to sleep and recover.
kookyrunner says
Always great to find out about fun new products!

Interesting! Insomnia has been such an issue for me over the past couple of years. Glad to know that another product exists that might help!
kookyrunner says
Ugh insomnia is the absolute worst! If you try out the product let me know!
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I like Nuun but I never tried nuun sleep. I wonder if this would replace a melatonin at night?
kookyrunner says
I don’t know for sure if it would replace melatonin.
Dominique Cheylise says
This sounds interesting! I like using BCAAs to help with recovery, and of course lots of fluids and sleep.
kookyrunner says
I have been meaning to try BCAAs to help with recovery. Thanks for the reminder!
Chris says
I’ve never tried any of the Nuun products, I will give this one a try. Thanks!
kookyrunner says
Hope you like it!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I’m so glad you had mentioned this product to me. I’ve had a sample of it for a while but hadn’t tried it – I like it and will definitely be ordering more.
kookyrunner says
So glad that you liked it! I can’t wait to drink mine tonight.
Denise @runheartfit says
I never heard of this Nuun. I drink the electrolyte replacement one.
This sounds like something I need to try….yawn.
Thanks for the info Kim!
kookyrunner says
No problem! Hope that you get a chance to try it out!

I can’t imagine drinking this in warm water. But then again I’m not a tea drinker.
It’s so far so good in a full bottle of cold water for me. I don’t like it as much as I like some of the other flavors, but it’s a nice alternate to Gatorade
kookyrunner says
At first I had the same thought but it’s actually really good – but I’m also a huge tea drinker 🙂
