Happy Friday! Can you believe it’s the first Friday of 2020? I don’t know about you but I’m always super excited for the beginning of a new year. To me, it’s just a clean slate for a fresh new start. I’m hitting the ground running with my goals for January – check them out!
First, let’s take a look at my goals from December:
Re-adjust my workout schedule
Grade: B+
I did a much better job at getting in more variety in my workouts last month by scaling back OTF to 3-4 times a week vs 5 times a week. I still have some tweaking to do but I definitely feel like I’m on the right track!
Bring some holiday cheer to my office
Grade: A
I’m giving myself an A for this even though I don’t think many people in my office cared, lol. Hey, you can’t please everyone!
Do a pantry/freezer challenge
Grade: B-
Well I was doing pretty well until the holidays hit. I’ll probably just continue whee I left off in January.
Here are my goals for January!
Daily core workouts
One of my goals for 2020 is to complete a monthly challenge every month. My monthly challenge for January will be to get in at least a 5 minute core workout daily. I know that having a strong core will help me with everything – strength training, running, posture, etc. I need to do more core work and I’m hoping this will help me develop a habit of doing it more often. I’ll be using the core workouts on the Peloton app.
Make healthier food choices
I over indulged over the holidays and I have absolutely no regrets. The holidays come around once a year and I take full advantage 🙂 That being said, it’s time to get back on track and make smarter choices. To help me jumpstart this, I re-joined WW (formerly Weight Watchers). This has helped me in the past and I know that it can be used as a stepping stone to make healthier/smarter food choices. Also the program now offers 3 different plans (you take a survey to decided the best fit for you) so I feel like it will fit my active/busy lifestyle.
If you want to try WW free for a month, click here!
No Spend January
I think my wallet will very much appreciate this goal! This month I’m planning on only spending money on groceries and that’s it. No clothing, eating out, etc. It’s always nice to tighten up the budget, especially after a month full of spending for the holidays.
That’s it for this month – wish me luck!
If you set monthly goals, what are your goals for January?
I’m linking up for Fridays with Fairytales and Fitness from Fairytales and Fitness.
Darlene says
Good luck. Those are tough goals. I’m sure you can do them.
My goal is to get rid of my foot pain. But continue on the gym bike on non running days.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Darlene. I’m hoping I can achieve them all.
Wendy says
Not spending would be a tough one for me, lol! But I do defintely need to cut back after the free-wheeling month of December. My goal is to sort out that mess of content scraping from my blog.
kookyrunner says
The content scraping has really annoyed me this week. I’m trying to just “let it go” but it’s hard. I’m angry!
Coco says
Oh, I did a no spend Lent two years ago. I had to pass up some great deals, but it wasn’t too bad. 3-4 days of OTF is still a lot, but it’s SO addictive! I love just showing up and knowing I will get a kick-ass workout that’s not the same as the previous ones.
Happy New Year!
kookyrunner says
I agree! It’s addicting because I always just feel so good after class and I absolutely love our coaches. I think that 3x a week will probably be my minimum.
Catrina says
A great goal with the core work! 5 minutes are all it takes and it isn’t daunting. Very smart!
Ah, and I LOVE the no spending goal! I track our money spending every month and it’s so gratifying to see the needless expenses going down. You have my full support!
kookyrunner says
Thanks! That’s exactly why I picked 5 minutes. I told myself that surely I could find 5 minutes a day to do this, lol.
I also track my monthly expenses and when I saw December I was like yeah, time to pull back!
Chaitali says
Sounds like a great set of goals to start the year! I’ve definitely been over indulging on the food side as well and was talking about rejoining weight watchers too. It’s a good tool to get back to being mindful about eating.
kookyrunner says
I agree – it makes me more mindful of what I’m putting in my mouth. It’s a good jumpstart for me too.
Marcia says
Corework is always a great idea! All the best with WW! I just saw a WW popup in nearby strip center. They may have taken a new name but it’s amazing how they’ve stood the test of time!
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I used WW last year and it worked for me so I’m hoping for the same results this time. I really just need a good jump start!
Laurie says
Wow! 2 big January challenges. Good luck! I think I could use a no-spend challenge in January as well. We have been eating out far less frequently lately and I like it. Plus the credit card bill is so much smaller. It needed to go on a diet after Christmas!
What is a pantry/freezer challenge?
kookyrunner says
Yup, sometimes our credit cards needs to go on a diet, haha
A pantry/freezer challenge is when you use up the items that you have one hand before buying new ones. Its a good way to clear out both and use up food before it expires, and it saves you money too!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
I like your plan to spend five minute per day working on your core. Your body will thank you, especially as you get older. Believe me, I know from experience! My wallet would appreciate a no-spend January as well! 😀
Happy New Year! Here’s to a healthy and fit 2020!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Debbie! I hope that the core work will actually become a habit. I really need to do it every day, not just in the month of January.
Renée says
I think you did well in December! I mean it’s always tricky around the holidays. Some people don’t even make any effort at all!
Liking your Jan goals too. I think I’m going to check out what’s on offer for core at Les Mills. This weekend I’ll be diving in more to what’s available “on demand” and at the gym, plus pilates will be back in session. I want to have a schedule of sorts for the rest of the month. I’ve given myself a free pass this week on workouts, but am already back to logging on MFP. The New WW is tempting… that free month link I guess is for US only?
No spend is always a good idea. I had a goal last year for no spend on Inknburn or ProCompression socks for six months. I lasted the entire year! I didn’t have a lot of extra money anyway (hello making travel a priority) but after 6 months I didn’t even think about it. I just forgot. It helps I took both companies off my social media.
No goals really. Am going “dry” until Ron’s birthday weekend in Paris and then when we are back for another 21 days. I’m also prepping for the 21 day hormone reset diet (hence no drinking for that period of time) and am curious if I can figure out how to get my cortisol and hunger in check. I’m not doing it to lose weight. I have gained weight but I’m just focusing on a few other things first; movement and whacky hormones (thanks, menopause!).
kookyrunner says
That’s awesome that Les Mills has classes on demand. I hope that you’re able to find some that you really like. The free month for WW is for US only unfortunately – sorry 🙁
I didn’t really spend too much money on running related items last year – all those savings went to my monthly OTF membership, LOL.
The Accidental Marathoner says
I love the idea of monthly goals – so much better to bite off a little at a time. I also love challenges. As you know, right now I’m in the BRP Fitness Step Challenge. I’m starting with a bang, and I hope I can carry it for the entire month. Luckily we’ve been blessed with good weather.
kookyrunner says
Exactly! The monthly goals make it easier for me to really achieve the yearly goals.
I haven’t been getting all my steps in this week but I’ll be back i full force next week!
Kimberly Hatting says
The No Spend goal is great! I’ve often thought of doing something similar… I’m pretty frugal, though, for the most part. Besides, I acquired two new pairs of shoes recently, do I should be good…except for races LOL
kookyrunner says
I’m frugal too but I spent a little too much on gifts and whatnot over the holidays, lol. Time to reel the spending back in.
Cari says
Oh WW reboots. The core of friends I met through WW and I just celebrated ten years — and about that many program reboots since then.
I could do with no spend January, but already spent too much. Determined not to buy lunch at work and to that end did a twelve meal MealPal
kookyrunner says
Thats awesome that you still keep it touch with all of those friends you made from WW!
Cari says
We all left the WW boards and made a FB group. We occasionally say we’re glad we were fat — because we’d never have met otherwise. Been lucky enough to meet one or two live since
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
I enjoy setting some goals, although I haven’t done so yet! I will start eating better after the holiday cookie purge happens. Since we were out of town right after Christmas, we put all of our leftover Christmas cookies and treats into the freezer, and we are still enjoying them. At the rate I eat them, I think we’ll be done by Jan 15th and much healthier eating can happen!!
kookyrunner says
I gave myself until December 31 to keep indulging in all the yummy holiday food but then got back on track on Jan 1. It’s been hard because I’m still craving the sweets but I know the craving will subside eventually.
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
Wow! I didn’t know Pelaton had a core workout. Is it another subscription you have to pay for? I do a 30 min core workout at the gym every now and then and I can definitely tell when I haven’t taken it in awhile.
kookyrunner says
Nope! If you have the Peloton app, all those classes are included 🙂
Elaine D says
I like the monthly workout challenge you’re doing! I was thinking of possibly doing the same – core is a good one to focus on. I need to re-consider subscribing to the Peloton app – I enjoyed all their workouts when I did the free trial last year.
kookyrunner says
I figured I would start off with core since it’s probably the most important one for me right now!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
You’ve got some great challenges planned! I’m trying to be more consistent with core work too – so important! I gotta admit I think I’d struggle with the no spend challenge, LOL!
kookyrunner says
LOL I know the no spend challenge will be hard but so far so good!
Hannah says
I’m trying to finish drafting 2 scientific papers this month – don’t think I will have any willpower left over to focus on other goals! I am ready to get back into my normal workout routine though.
kookyrunner says
good luck completing the 2 scientific papers!
Farrah says
Yay! Great job on your goals from December! I need to do a freezer/pantry challenge too…and I’d like to incorporate daily core/stretching! Best of luck to you on this month’s goals!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Farrah!
Angela Campos says
I love the idea of doing a challenge each month! The core challenge is right up my alley, that is the area I struggle with the most!! I am with you on making healthier food choices!! I did not do so good over the holidays, so I need to get back on track!!!
kookyrunner says
Same! I totally struggle with core work so that’s why I decided to kick off the year with a core challenge.
San says
I love that you picked three goals to focus on. I want to do a no spend challenge (maybe in February, because I am going on a friend’s retreat this month). Love the core challenge… definitely something that will pay off!!
kookyrunner says
I realize that if I pick too many goals it’s a recipe for disaster so I try to stick to less than 5 to make it more manageable.
