Happy Friday! Is it really the last Friday of January? I feel like I just stopped saying “Happy New Year”, LoL. This month is flying by so quickly, but it’s the perfect time for some runfessions!
I runfess that rude people at the gym drive me bonkers
Look, I’m all for the “resolution members” – those new gym members that have decided to get healthy in the New Year. But if you’re going to go to the gym, actually act like you want to be there. Don’t talk to your friends when the instructor is trying to explain moves in the class. Don’t talk loudly on your phone when you’re on the treadmill. Don’t sit on equipment/machines and have a conversation and not use said equipment or machine. The gym is overcrowded at this time of year so I just hate when people take up space there that obviously don’t want to be there.
I runfess that drastically changing eating habits while marathon training may not have been the best idea
I’ve talked about this a few times but on January 2nd I made the switch from carnivore to pescatarian. This is something that I have thought about doing for years and decided to finally make the big switch this year. Overall it’s been going well but I have noticed a decrease in energy. I’m not sure if it’s due to the switch or marathon training, but I have been making more of an effort to get more protein into my diet and that is helping. I know it’s definitely going to be a process as I learn how to cook new/different meals, but I’m up to the challenge.
I runfess that I think I figured out what was causing my weird foot issue
Remember a few weeks ago when I tried out the Saucony Guide 10s? Well I think that I have to break up with them, at least for long distance runs. At first the sneakers felt pretty good but over the past 3 weeks I’ve noticed a weird pain in my left foot, sometimes when running and sometimes directly after running. This week I’ve been running in my Mizunos again and so far so good. I think I can make it through the rest of my marathon training if I keep rotating my current selection of Mizuno Wave Inspire 10s and 11s, but I think that after the marathon, many of those sneakers will be over 400 miles so they will be retired. Why do companies change their sneakers?! I feel like I’ll never find sneakers that I like as much as the older versions of the Mizuno Wave Inspires.
I runfess that winter running has been a little crazy this month
The winter weather was pretty brutal at the beginning of the month. It’s a little better now, but I still worry about ice, especially black ice. I have done my fair share of treadmill running this month but I do try to get outside when I can. I do have to thank the 40/80 Challenge for encouraging me to get outside for outside runs this winter. Although running with 2-3 layers of clothing is not ideal, I’ll take this weather over summer running anyday!
I runfess that I’ve lost a bit of my blogging mojo this month
I’m not sure why but I haven’t felt like blogging that much this month. It’s not that I’m sick of blogging, it’s just that I don’t feel like I have that much to say. I love doing my weekly wrap blog posts, but other than that I’m struggling to find interesting topics to discuss. I’m hoping that I get my mojo back next month!
That’s it for this month – thanks for reading my runfessions! I hope that you have a great weekend!
I’m linking up with Marcia from Marcia’s Healthy Slice for Runfessions.
I’m also linking up for Friday Five 2.0 with Rachel from Running on Happy and Lacey and Meranda from Fairytales and Fitness.
Do you have anything you want to runfess for January?
Kimberly Hatting says
Bummer about the Saucony shoes, but I”m glad you figured out the problem…and you still have your Mizunos to rely on. I agree with you…I like the current Mizunos (I have the WI 13’s), but I LOVED the older models. I’m glad I found the Brooks Adrenalines…those have been a great shoe for me.
kookyrunner says
I hope that the new version of the wave inspires are good! I searched high and low on the internet for the 10s and 11s last week and there are none left in my size, lol
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Ive been struggling a bit with blogging lately too. i think it was easier in December when there was so much to talk about, with winter starting, the holidays, etc. Now its just the January lull. Its definitely been an interesting month for running. I feel like the weather has changed drastically every day!
kookyrunner says
That’s a good point about the January lull. You’re so right that there was SO much going on in December but this month, not so much!
Marcia says
I’m glad you figured out the foot issue. I keep saying I’m going to drop one blog day per week and I think that will happen next week. Yep the weather is nuts. We’ve got a nice few days ahead of us then they’re saying the deep freeze will be back. Ugh.
kookyrunner says
I like to blog a minimum of 3 days a week, but I’ve been struggling to even do that! I do think that it’s hard to think of new topics which is what I’m currently struggling with!
HoHo Runs says
I like the current Mizuno Inspires better than the 10 and 11s, actually. One of those models was too rigid on the top and caused some problems for me. I agree it is so frustrating to finally find the perfect pair and then they change it! I’m right there with you on blogging. It’s pretty easy to spit out a weekly report, but then I can’t think of anything else to say.
kookyrunner says
For some reason the Wave Inspire 12s and 13s felt too heavy on my feet and a little clunky. Hopefully the new ones will be good, or I might think of switching to the Wave Riders.
Wendy says
I go through ups and downs with blogging. I’ve gotten a few crazy ideas and inspiration (my last post!!!) and have been having some fun with it this year. I’m sure I’ll burn out again. It seems kind of cyclical.
I hope you get your energy back!
kookyrunner says
I agree that blogging is definitely cyclical. I’m hoping to get some ideas/inspiration from books and/or magazines.
Coco says
I love that shoe meme — so true in so many ways. I’m seeing all those great posts about Mizunos and wondering if it’s time I break up with mine — or at least figure out which one of mine is least likely to aggravate my foot – the Wave Riders or the Inspires? I’ve been wearing some light UA shoes for OTF and those are working well, but that’s only for 2 mi on the treadmill.
kookyrunner says
I’ve never tried the Wave Riders but I might try those if the new version of the Wave Inspires don’t work for me.
Anna @ Piper's Run says
I used to love blogging all the time but now I just focus on my weekly post (Mondays) and if I can do 1-2 other posts in that week, it’s a bonus. I just don’t make the time like I used to for blogging.
kookyrunner says
Same here. I used to make time on the weekends to blog, or at least start a blog post but I’m busy with other things now.
Debbie says
I go through phases when I wonder if I want to keep blogging. I love it but sometimes after eight years I really do feel like I’ve said all I have to say.
It’s a shame you’re having problems with Saucony. So many times that shoe companies have changed my favorite models to “make them better,” but instead just messed them up!
kookyrunner says
I can understand that. I think I’ve only been blogging for about 3 years and sometimes I wonder how much longer I can do it.
I’m hoping that I am able to find sneakers in time for my Fall marathon training. Luckily what I have now will get me through for the my fall marathon, thank goodness!
Jen @ SprinklesHikes says
Shoe companies always feel the need to “innovate” but I think sometimes they lose track of what makes the shoe so popular in the first place. You can always tell when a shoe gets a ton of negative feedback because they’ll go back so similar to the “original” version that you can hardly tell them apart! haha I totally feel you on losing blogging mojo – I lose mine every fall until just about spring.
kookyrunner says
Exactly! I am hoping that Mizuno goes back to the “original” version or else I’m in trouble for my Fall marathon!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Sorry the Guide 10s didn’t work out. It drives me crazy when shoe companies mess with a shoe design. It’s why I’m struggling to find my long run shoe right now. I’ve been in a bit of a blogging slump for a while so I hear what you’re saying – I think it all goes in cycles.
kookyrunner says
I wish there was a website that just sold older versions of sneakers, kind of like a “classic” website for sneakers, lol
Hannah says
Hahah! I totally agree–those resolution people drive me nuts too! They go so intensely it’s not sustainable and the cycle starts again next January!
kookyrunner says
Yup! It’s super annoying and I just hate when people are rude!
Darlene says
I agree. This weather has been driving me crazy. Warm, freezing, icy, snowy, windy. What’s a runner to do.
I need to get in gear since I have a half in 7 weeks.
It is tough to think of what to blog about. Sometime I wonder if anyone cares about what I have to say.
kookyrunner says
The weather has been all over the place! If the ice would go away, I would feel much better about running outside!
Karen @ fit in France says
As soon as I find a pair of sneakers that work for me I usually buy 3 pair, to ensure that I will be good for at least 18 months. Hope your foot is feeling better.
kookyrunner says
That’s what I usually do to and I was lucky to get about 2 years from all the extra pairs I purchased, lol
Renee says
rude people at the gym – Grrrrrrrrr. So feel you on this one.
I switched a while ago to vegetarian with the intent of going vegan but getting enough protein is so hard. I was seeing my fat % go up too. So now I’m pretty much lacto-ovo with the occasional bio animal. Trying for more humane in any case and way more vegetarian. Finding a balance is so hard. You need your energy and you need your protein!
as for blogging – I think of stuff to blog about but to be honest I’m just too busy. If I manage a weekly and a Friday then I’ll be happy. I WANT to be consistent, so shooting for 2 posts a week is enough. with all the other stuff on top (social media) I just don’t have the time or energy. Not saying that I’m way busier than other people, it’s just different and I can’t blog all week. I enjoy your weeklies in any case!
kookyrunner says
You are so right – getting protein is hard, especially because I’m not a huge fan of eggs or beans.
Rachel says
My blogging mojo is long gone. I’m trying to stick with it but it’s getting hard.
I was a vegetarian for a few years. At first I felt AMAZING. My body felt clean and I didn’t feel icky at all. But in the last year or so I realized I was hungry ALL THE TIME. And I’m certain I wasn’t getting enough protein. I feel much better lately. I hope you find a good balance, I’m sure you will!
kookyrunner says
I think after a few years it definitely gets hard. I feel like I don’t have anything new to say…
I think getting more protein is key for me, especially with training. I’m really going to try to pay close attention to my nutrition this week and make sure I’m getting tons of protein.
Smitha @ FauxRunner says
I hear you on the blogging mojo. I struggle a lot too. There’s things I want to write but not sure if anyone wants to read them. I’m finding it a bit better this year although i didn’t blog much the past 2 weeks. I’m sure you will too!
kookyrunner says
Same here! What it’s important to me might mean nothing to someone else, lol
Andrea says
I hear ya on the blogging mojo. When this happens I just try to ride it out until that inspiration hits. And it always does in unexpected ways.
kookyrunner says
That’s a good plan, it definitely can’t be forced.
The Accidental Marathoner says
Those are the very reasons I avoid public gyms. My husband convinced me to join several years ago, even though he knew I wasn’t into it. I think I went 4 years paying almost $700 a year just to get 10% off of my pedicures at their spa!
kookyrunner says
I’m considering if I really even need the gym at this point. I’ve got a pretty good home gym starting to form now!
San says
Sadly I have to agree on No. 1 – as much as I respect people for making New Year’s resolutions to get fit and healthy, I hate when they think it’s enough to “go to the gym”, but then not to work out. News flash: this is not how this thing works. 😉
kookyrunner says
Yup! It’s like they want to say they went to the gym to sound cool (I guess?), but not actually do any work. It’s so annoying!
Nicole @ fitnessfatale says
I bet you’ll get your blogging mojo back! It happens to the best of us!
kookyrunner says
Thank you! I’m just hoping that this is a small rut.
Shathiso says
What I have found really awkward is when people come and just stare at us in the gym classes. Not just glancing to have an idea about what the class is, but actual gawking. And I think don’t you have anything better to do?! Your blogging mojo will come back – sometimes you just need a bit of a break to get that inspiration back.
kookyrunner says
Oh I’ve experienced that too! It’s very, very weird!
fairytales and fitness says
Glad you figured your foot problem out. I loved my Sauconys for walking so I wanted to love them for running too but they just didn’t feel right.
On an unrelated note, Do you know if Rock n Roll Brooklyn is going to happen this year? After I heard about it from your blog last year I decided to put it on my list of races for 2018. I went to the site and it is not listed. Bummer! Do you know anything about it? -M
kookyrunner says
Yes I think I will keep them for walking and fitness classes like boot camp. I might be able to run in them for shorter distances too.
Rock N Roll Brooklyn is NOT happening this year 🙁 They didn’t really give a reason, but just said that they are not doing RnR Brooklyn or RnR St Louis this year – it’s a bummer!
Fairytales and fitness says
O heck that IS SO disappointing. I wanted to make that my “big” race for the year. Rock n Roll has been making some odd decisions lately.
kookyrunner says
I agree. The only thing I can think of is that logistically doing races in NYC/Brooklyn is a nightmare so maybe it just got to be too complicated 🙁
Jenn says
I have a pair of Inspire 12s, and I am hoping the 14s will be great. I seem to struggle with every other model of the Mizunos.
I like some of the updates that are made to shoes lately. I’ve had some really good luck with the Adrenalines, and I love the new Asics GT2000 – I’ve never worn Asics before and for the first time, I feel like I can.
I think we all go through dry spells with our content. You’ll get that mojo back.
kookyrunner says
I haven’t tried the newest model yet, but I’m hoping that those will be good for me.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I have a pair of shoes that I can only wear for shorter runs — they bother me on longer runs. And I tangled with some black ice this week — thankfully, I won!
If I weren’t married I’d totally be pescetarian. But for some people it isn’t the right thing.
I rarely have trouble coming up with topics, but that might be because I don’t work! I’m sure you’ll get more into it again at some point. But that’s the point — do what moves you.
kookyrunner says
I’m glad that you didn’t fall on the black ice this week!
You’re right – I think some topics will just come to me at some point. You definitely can’t force blogging, that’s for sure!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
I’m with you on rude people at the gym. If you’re going to go to the gym, then go with the intended purpose that it is there for, not for social hour.
kookyrunner says
Exactly! There’s a time and place for everything.
Karen says
I feel like when I post a blog I want to have time to interact and some weeks that challenges me. I like to read enough to keep with what everyone has going on but I find it hard to read every post. I have not been posting much lately.
I hope the added protein will help with energy. I have noticed since I cut my caffeine intake so much I am struggling a little more, so chewing the run gum seems to help me.
You do a great job with training and the weather! It is very hard when you love in area that gets lots of snow.
kookyrunner says
I am a fan of run gum too. I usually only have it for me long runs but maybe I should try it before some of my shorter workouts too!
vicki says
I felt like I lost my blogging mojo late last year… I’m thinking it was a side effect of marathon training.
kookyrunner says
You know what, I never thought of that! I think that you’re onto something there.
Zenaida Arroyo says
I agree about the shoes. Companies should just leave them alone!! I have found my favorite and have stocked up.
I am with you on the blogging but I think it will pass. Also, remember that this is a hobby – just write what you like and when you want to.
kookyrunner says
I almost wish companies had a “classics” collection, where they would keep making older version of sneakers. I would totally be willing to pay more!
Very true to think of blogging as a hobby. You definitely need a love for it in order for it to work!
Esther says
Lady, I hear ya about the gym! Although I have noticed my regular members have been acting more like newbies than the newbies! Everyone needs to just come and get work done!
I am just getting back into running and I have been struggling to find the right shoe this time. Maybe post injury I just run different? Not sure, but it is no fun! Where is my fairy godmother to bring me shoes that fit perfect? Haha
kookyrunner says
find the right running sneakers can definitely be a frustrating process! I hope that you find the right sneaker for you soon.
