Happy Friday! Well, another month is almost over. 2019 seems to be going by as quickly as 2018!
As usual, since it’s the last Friday of the month, I’m linking up with Marcia from Marcia’s Healthy Slice for Runfessions. Let’s get started!
I runfess that I’m putting more of an emphasis on strength training
I love strength training but this year I am hoping to take it to the next level. I know that doing classes at Orange Theory Fitness will help with that, but the studio won’t be open for another month or so. Until then, I’m really enjoying all of the strength classes on the Peloton app. They even have the classes broken out by categoey – legs and glutes, core, arms and shoulder, chest and back, full body, toning and bodyweight. Also because most of the classes are short (10-15 mins), I can easily add one or two classes after a run.
I runfess I’m trying to limit my screen time
Although I don’t watch too much TV, I spend a lot of time on laptops. I work on one all day at work and then I also use my laptop for blogging. Besides the laptop, I am usually on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram daily. It’s just too much time looking at screens. I’ve been trying to “unplug” by 8pm each night. So far my success rate with that is about 50/50 but I’m glad that I’m at least aware of it now.
I runfess that I’m looking forward to my first race of the year
My first race of the year will be the Hot Chocolate 15K in Philly on April 6th. I can’t believe that I haven’t done any races this year! I’m looking forward to going to Philly (it’s one of my favorite cities) and meeting up with a few running buddies there.
I runfess that dating in 2019 is exhausting
Nothing to do with running, but I’m so over dating. You would think it would be easier now with all of the online apps and websites, but I think that makes it harder. Combine that with guys that have the maturity level of a 5 year old and it can get to be super frustrating. I posted the below on my Instagram stories earlier this week and I stand by it, lol.
I runfess that I’m looking forward to trying my new Turtle Gloves!
As a BibRave PRO I get the opportunity to try out different products. I just received the Turtle Gloves in the mail yesterday and can’t wait to try them out on my outdoor runs over the next few weeks. These are mid-weight fleece gloves that convert easily from mittens to fingerless gloves. I have a feeling these will be perfect for me because sometimes my hands overheat when I wear gloves too long but having the fingerless option will be helpful.
That’s it for this month – thanks for reading my runfessions! I hope that you have a great weekend!
I’m also linking up for Friday Five 2.0 with Lacey and Meranda from Fairytales and Fitness.
Do you have anything you want to runfess for February?
Wendy says
Haha on that dating meme… I swear, if I was single, I’d stay single…
Feeling you on strength training. It’s the area where I can still make gains. It’s fun to feel strong, isn’t it?
I used to get cold hands all the time but now my hands are always warm. It’s probably because of RA–I have inflammation in my hands. Silver lining, right?
kookyrunner says
I’m really starting to think that way as well – I mean nothing is wrong with being single to be honest, and you have more freedom which is always nice!
Yes! So nice to feel strong – I love it!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I’ve been trying to up my strength training game too – I’m hoping it helps ensure I get to Chicago this fall!
That dating meme is too funny! I can only imagine all the dating websites and apps would have my head spinning!
kookyrunner says
You and me both! I’m currently thinking about my training plan for Chicago and it’s going to have a huge emphasis on strength training!
Dating these days just makes my head hurt, literally!
Marcia says
Strength training changes you. It also makes you a much better STRONGER runner. I was into strength training before I started running and I swear it is the KEY to how I got to Boston so quickly. OMG I’d stay single too.
kookyrunner says
I totally agree with that. I’m starting to think on how I want to train different for Chicago this year and strength training is a big part of that.
Coco says
OMG, I’m so glad I don’t have to deal with dating in the digital age. I think strength training is addictive. You will love how much stronger you feel and will see impact in your running too. The Peleton app looks pretty amazing.
kookyrunner says
Dating in the digital age is a complete nightmare. I think I’ll write a book about it, LOL.
That’s a good way to describe it! I really do like seeing my progress as far as how many more reps I can do or if I can use bigger weights.
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
I love my strength training days. I need to check out some more of the Peloton ST classes. I love the 10 min yoga and stretch classes so much. Ugh dating-wish I had the perfect guy for ya!
kookyrunner says
Me too – Sometimes I prefer those over my running days to be honest. I really enjoy the 10 minute stretching classes on the app too, especially after a run!
Laurie says
Philly is one of my favorite cities too – I only live about an hour away. Now I wish I had signed up for the Hot Chocolate race too, but I wasn’t signing up for anything due to the injury. And I hear you about the screen time thing. As bloggers, we spend a lot of time already in front of a screen. Add in FB, Twitter….Ugh!
kookyrunner says
My screen time was getting to be a bit much so I’m glad that I’m more aware of it now!
Kimberly Hatting says
To echo everyone else, I’m so glad the dating thing is a non-issue for me these days. UGH. With all the apps and technology, there area probably a lot more available dudes (at least they’re more accessible LOL)…but who can you trust? We all know what we see on social media is seldom what you really get. My condolences, Kim. And kudos to you on all the strength-training! I don’t do a lot of what I’d call “focused” strength training, but I do enough to maintain my muscle tone, and that is quite empowering in itself.
kookyrunner says
That’s true, but I’ve found that having more access doesn’t mean quality, lol.
For the strength training I’m trying to do one day upper body, one day lower body and 2 days full body. I don’t think I’ll be able to keep that schedule when marathon training starts this summer, but I’ll just see what I can do!
Darlene says
Good for you on strength training.
I was hoping you’d come to NYC and do the Hot Chocolate 15k in Brooklyn. But enjoy. Races always lift my spirits.
I do love philly. I need to go back because it rained the whole time I was there in 2014.
kookyrunner says
I didn’t see the Brooklyn race until I had already signed up for the Philly race 🙁 I know a good amount of people signed up for the Brooklyn race so I think it should be a fun race!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
I like doing short strength training sessions. I just did my only goal race . . . I’ll do some shorter races, I’m sure, and hope that I can add another state this year but am unsure.
I hear a lot of people saying that dating is actually harder now with all the technology. Oddly enough I get a fair number of men followers on IG. I’m like really? Have you noticed all the gray hair? I never follow them back. It’s creepy!
kookyrunner says
Last year I was able to add 4 new states to my half marathon goal but this year I will probably only add 2 new states. I don’t think I’ll do as many races this year since I’m not doing and RnR races and the Chicago Marathon is my only goal race.
I actually don’t get too many creepy male followers on IG, thank goodness! I don’t know if I could deal with that and the crazy dating apps, lol.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Last year I did 4 long races, but only added 2 new states. And so it goes.
This year is totally up in the air, but at least I’ve added one state. I was thinking about another state in April but I’m just so over cold running. 🙁
patrick@looneyforfood.com says
I too am trying to limit screen time and am focusing more on strength.
kookyrunner says
Looks like we have some of the same goals!
Virjinia @ With Purpose and Kindness says
I have the Peloton treadmill and I’ve been LOVING the bootcamp classes. I haven’t done a bunch of weekly miles but I feel strong and fit so I’m rolling with it. I did the 15k in Houston and had a blast! You’re going to kill it!
kookyrunner says
I wish I had the Peloton treadmill! I still use the app to do the treadmill classes on the treadmill I have at home. I just try to mimic the speed and incline to match what the instructor is doing.
Allie says
You are going to LOVE OrangeTheory (if you don’t already?) and I so wish there was one closer to me. I too have upped my strength training game and it’s such a smart thing to do – it will only make you a better more injury-free runner!
And I’m SO thankful to out of the dating scene in this technological world! I tell my husband that all.the.time. He legit left a note on my car asking me out. I still have the note. #oldschool
kookyrunner says
I’ve never tried an OTF class but a new studio is opening up in my city next month and I can’t wait to start taking classes there!
I LOVE that your husband left you a note on your car to ask you out! That’s so old school and sweet – you don’t see that a lot these days.
Erica @ Erica Finds says
Strength training and Pilates have been a game changer for me! So many fewer injuries!
I don’t envy you on the dating thing. Seems exhausting and so complicated. I didn’t even have text when I met my husband!
kookyrunner says
I tried Pilates once and it was so hard! I need to try it again once my core is stronger.
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
That Peloton App is really cool! I love that it gives you so many different workable options! I’m all about the strength training. 🙂
I’m with you on screen time. I don’t watch that much TV either but my phone can be a big problem. I’m not on the laptop as much since I finished school but I’ve been busy and then I get backlogged on blogging stuff and can spend 2 full days with the laptop literally attached to my hip. (wow that was a long sentence) I need to get back to actually scheduling my computer time. I have books that I want to read that aren’t even getting touched!
kookyrunner says
My phone can be a huge sucker of my time if I let it happen. It’s just so easy to do everything on it – shop, read emails, browse social media, etc.
Fairytales and fitness says
I do feel bad for those who are “dating” these days. Like you said, you would think with all the technology it would be easier but honestly I would think it makes it more stressful ! But then again i met my husband before “texting” was really a thing…haha
kookyrunner says
Yeah there’s just too many different apps and websites now – it’s makes it 10x more difficult! I would love to go back to when things were much more simple 🙂
Cari says
Awareness of the screen time is a big victory
I’m still hoping to do the Brooklyn Hot Chocolate run. It sounds amazing, just need to keep an eye on calendar.
kookyrunner says
I think the HV15K in Brooklyn is going to be great!
Cari says
Oh me too, just trying to get calendar to settle
Will be using your code if I do so hope it helps you in some way
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Dating is SO HARD! I’m having the same struggle. I vacillate between wanting to date another runner and then wanting to date anyone BUT another runner. But I am just too tired to put in the effort half the time lol
kookyrunner says
I would prefer to date another runner, or someone that likes to workout. At least we would have that in common. Actually right now I’d just settle for someone normal, lol.
Zenaida Arroyo says
How fun that you are doing the Hot Chocolate. I’ve run it once or twice years ago and didn’t like due to the race logistics. I know it is different now but just haven’t been interested to run it again.
Dating? What is that? 🙂
kookyrunner says
I ran the HC15K a few years ago. The route for the Philly race is pretty straight forward – our and back – so luckily the logistics were easy.
The Accidental Marathoner says
I’m really trying to up my strength training game. We have so much equipment in our home gym – I really have no excuses! I can’t imagine dating in current times. My friend found herself suddenly single a number of years ago and said at this point, they’re all rejects or losers. I hope that’s not what you’re finding in your pool! I didn’t get picked for the Turtle Gloves campaign – I can’t wait to hear how everyone likes them!
kookyrunner says
I feel like between the at home equipment you can buy and all the awesome workout apps available, it makes it so easy to workout at home. I had to get in the mindset that not every workout ha to be an hour. If I can it in 10-30 minus on most days thats fine!
I tend to agree with your friend when it comes to her conclusion on dating, lol.
I love the Turtle Gloves so far!
RFC says
I love, love, love strength training. It’s nearly tied with running 😉 I’m glad you are enjoying it lately!
kookyrunner says
Agreed! Sometimes I actually prefer to do strength training over running.
San says
Oh boy, I am so glad I am not dating in 2019… it sounds exhausting just listening to others.
kookyrunner says
So exhausting! It gets to a point where it’s actually a waste of time too.
