Happy Sunday! Unlike last week, I feel like this week just totally flew by. But that’s a good thing because just one week separates me from my ‘staycation’ at the end of the month ๐ I’m really looking forward to the break.
Here’s how week 3 of training went for Rock ‘n’ Roll Philly.
Monday, August 13
Spinning (30 minute Hip Hop ride) + Strength Training (15 minutes).
I ended up swapping my Monday and Tuesday workouts because I just wasn’t in the mood for a run after work.
Tuesday, August 14
6 mile run.
Overall this run felt pretty good. It was super hot and humid outside so I opted for the treadmill.
I also went to vote before work. It’s SO important to vote in local elections!! ๐
Wednesday, August 15
Boot Camp (60 minutes).
The instructor totally killed our legs during class – ouch! I also loved working out in this Champagne & Gainz tank from Fit&Flirty. Check out this blog post to learn more about the brand!
Thursday, August 16
5 mile run.
I haven’t been using all the necessary recovery tools during training and my legs let me know that during the last part of this run. I spent some quality time with them after my run.
Friday, August 17
A much needed REST DAY!
Saturday, August 18
10 mile run.
This was my first double digit run since May. Overall it was okay but my hips started to hurt around mile 8 which was a little painful. I also sweated my way through the entire run due to the crazy humidity – yuck! Thankfully there was cloud cover which was much appreciated, trust me!
Sunday, August 19
Spinning (45 mins) + Strength Training (45 mins).
I felt like I needed another spinning class today, but I also wanted to do some strength training – why not do both?! Super sweaty and tiring, but totally worth it!
Total Weekly Mileage: 21 miles
Weekly Weight Loss: +1.0
Summary: 3 runs, 2 spinning class, 1 Bootcamp and 2 Strength Training classes
Grade This Week โ A
I’m still trying to find the balance between spinning classes and strength training. I think I’m doing a good job so far, but there never seems to be enough hours in the day to complete everything, lol.
Saturday’s long run let me know that I need to get back to doing my PT exercises more regularly. I’ll admit that I’ve been slacking on these. I don’t have a good reason for this, it’s just me being lazy! Honestly it’s only 15 minutes out of my day so there’s no excuse. I’ll also start using my “torture devices” (foam rollers, etc) ore often too.
I feel like the Northeast has been dealing with really awful humidity for the past 3 weeks. It hasn’t been super hot but the humidity has made workouts pretty unbearable. Also the rain just seems to make it 10x worse. I am hopeful that we’ll get a break in the humidity at some point.
Unrelated to running…
I’m still working on my weight loss goal that I set for myself in May. I’m a few pounds away from my goal, and this week didn’t help. I didn’t meal prep last weekend and it definitely resulted in some ‘not-so-smart’ food choices, so I’m not really surprised at the small weight gain this past week. But all in all, I’ll never regret enjoying ice cream or pizza, lol. But I’m back in the saddle now and will be doing some meal prepping this afternoon to prepare me for next week!
Speaking of weight loss, my sister sent me this yesterday and I couldn’t stop laughing because it’s SO true!
Question – Have you heard of StepBet? It’s an app. Basically I just heard about it today and I’m thinking about joining a game on the app to hep keep me accountable when it comes to my daily steps/activities. If you have any experience with the app, please let me know! I’m so curious about it.
That’s it for this week – thanks for reading!
How was your week? How are you dealing with the humidity during your runs?
In Case You Missed It
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
Look at you back up to double digit runs! When you don’t do them for a while, it feels so far away doesn’t it? My hips tend to be sore after bumping back up to long runs too. A staycation sounds terrific!
kookyrunner says
Yeah I think because I haven’t run “long” in a while my hips were kinda like “whats going on here” lol
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I totally agree about the humidity! A break any day now would be nice! It can be really tough to balance everything. Looks like you did a great job getting it all done this week!
kookyrunner says
Today was probably the least humid day that we’ve had at 91% humidity, so there’s hope, lol
Sarah @ merrillthon says
Great week of workouts! I do the same thing with PT exercises, lol. It’s so easy to plan only enough time for your run/workout and not get them in! I think the whole eastern US has been mired in a bog of humidity this week. It nearly broke me on my long run this morning.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sarah! I think I may need to start doing my PT exercises in the morning before work. At least that way I can make sure I get them in.
Awesome job braving the humidity on your long run this weekend! I was just dropping with sweat after my run yesterday morning – it was so gross!
Jessie says
Yay for double digit runs this week! This Saturday was my first since February ๐ Felt great to see that number again!
It’s so hard to fit in the strength and the PT exercises and all the things we SHOULD be doing. It’s already hard enough to fit in runs with working full time right?? We do what we can…but it’s always when the pains come back that we are reminded that we NEED to make time for the PT exercises.
Great recap, I love following along with your training!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Jessie! And congrats to you on your double digit run as well!
I think I may start doing my PT exercises when I wake up in the morning. I feel like that’s a good way to guarantee that I actually do them, lol. After a run all I want to do is jump in the shower, especially in this heat and humidity!
Coco says
Nice double digit run! And a double workout today – yowzie! I definitely have been suffering with this humidity. My ride yesterday felt so hard! I used my foam roller this week too – it’s been too long.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Coco! I was really worried about that run all week and I’m glad that overall, it went well.
My foam roller and I are going to become best friends again in the near future lol
Wendy says
Nice job on that 10 miler. Sadly, I didn’t complete mine this weekend. Hoping that all my other activities count!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Wendy! You had an awesome week of workouts which more than makes up for your missed long run!
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Congrats on a double-digit run! For my PT exercises I set an alarm on my phone to remind me because otherwise I wouldn’t do them. I loved my staycation in June. It’ll be nice to explore your city a bit more and not have pressure of work!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Becca! That’s a great idea about setting an alarm for the PT exercises. I think that if I just wake up 15 minutes earlier in the morning I should be able to fit in the exercises before work.
I’ so looking forward to a week off work!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Good job staying active this week. I’m glad your 10-miler felt mostly good and you’r back in the double digits!
That weight loss cartoon is so funny, and sadly, often seems about right!
kookyrunner says
That cartoon makes me laugh every time I see it lol. It’s so unfair how easy it is for men to lose weight!
Kimberly Hatting says
Oh gosh…major humidity in Iowa, too! Funny thing is I don’t realize just how humid it actually is when the temps are “moderate” (like in the mid/high 60’s)…but when I get in the house, and try to peel off my saturated running gear. WOW….and that splashing sound they make as I flop them over the shower to dry…#yuck
kookyrunner says
LOL, that’s the worst! Nothing like trying to break free from a sweaty and wet sports bra!
Hannah says
Congrats on the double digit run! I’m really bad about using the “torture devices” too.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Hannah!
Liz Dexter says
Great work this week, well done. I’m having the same issue re wanting to go to spin, keeping my three runs a week, keeping my two yoga classes a week and doing strength training. Hm. I reckon I could take a leaf out of your book and do spin then at least abs and arms. And well done on getting some rolling done, too!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Liz! Sometimes I wish there were more hours in the day to get in everything that we want to accomplish!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
I have heard of stepbet but the truth is I don’t worry about steps much at all. I try to remain active & I’ll pace around the house when my Garmin reminds me that I’ve been inactive too long.
Last week was definitely ugly at the scale for me — there were a lot of miles but way more eating out than normal for me and way too much sugar. It happens. You just gotta move on & get back to basics (which I have). Of course another short racecation coming up isn’t super helpful, LOL!
The humidity has been simply horrible. I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a single run this month — until yesterday’s. It’s why I usually don’t have long races on my calendar in the summer!
kookyrunner says
I’ve noticed that my appetite is now through the roof since I’m running more/longer miles. I’ve just gotta keep working on keeping that in check, lol.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Oddly I didn’t suffer much from the rungries in this training. But all the sugar — I just gave myself a little too much permission to indulge.
I think the reason I didn’t get hungry much is the ever present humidity. I had a lot of days I really just wasn’t hungry (but there is always room for dessert!).
Debbie says
I’ve never heard of Step bar but it sounds interesting. Any way to find some accountability! That graphic your sister sent has me rolling. So true (and so unfair!).
courtney @ eat pray run dc says
I had a ten mile run this weekend as well. I think we’re getting some cooler temps for the next few days, yay! Do those PT exercises, ma’am!! ๐
kookyrunner says
I’m looking forward to some cooler and not-so-humid temps! I know I know – I have to do those PT exercises!
Chaitali says
Great job getting the foam rolling tools out again and using them ๐ I’ve been bad about that recently too and tried to make more of a concerted effort this week. It really does seem to help. And yay for voting!
kookyrunner says
Yup, I definitely had to dust them off and put them to work, lol.
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
I did my 10-miler last week, too. WOOHOO! Go us! Can’t wait for Philly ๐
kookyrunner says
Me too!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Another solid week of fitness! Spinning and strength training in the same day? I’m not sure I could do it, lol!
I have been working on losing a few pounds since I’ve been in PT recovery mode. Of course my birthday didn’t do me any favors, lol! It’s so easy to skip PT exercises, writing everything down in my journal has really helped me stay committed.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Janelle! For some reason, spinning always makes my legs feel better after a long run, lol.
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
I saw that meme and I giggled. Even though I’m not on a weight loss journey, I am on a muscle gaining journey and I think the same applies! My boyfriend may work out once or twice and he gets gains while I’m almost 2 months in and barely seeing anything…haha! Not fair.
It is hard to balance between all the workouts I want to do and the running. Usually I end up choosing running but I feel there’s so little time in the day to accomplish everything!
kookyrunner says
Yes I think the same applies for muscle gaining as well! I just think things come easier to them, lol.
Jenn says
I have slowed everything waaaaaay down to accommodate the humidity and the heat. There’s really no other way to handle it.
You’re doing awesome! No matter what, you are grinding out those workouts! You are going to be so ready for Philly!
kookyrunner says
My paces are way slower for various reasons this summer but I’m just learning to embrace it!
Lesley says
I missed last week, and it sounds like you’re recovering quite well from the bone marrow surgery. I haven’t been dealing with too much humidity, and instead Denver is dealing with the smoke from the California wildfires. I ran outside in Alaska and it felt awesome.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Lesley. I still have to use KT tape on my back when I run but overall everything is going well.
So cool that you were able to run outside in Alaska!
AmyC says
I am definitely not missing running in the humidity, but I do miss running. Great week!
kookyrunner says
The humidity is so brutal and it just sucks all of your energy!
Teresa says
Another great week of varied workouts for you Kim and I sooooo love that ‘Champagne and Gainz’ t shirt! You definitely have the inside scoop on where to get all the cutest workout tanks!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Teresa! I love that shirt too and only wish I had some champagne to enjoy after my workout lol
Fairytales and fitness says
Yay for your double digit run. I remember that step bet being popular a few years back but I never got I to it. Please share more when you learn more about it!
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I was happy to get through my long run on Sunday. If I learn more about StepBet I’ll share on the blog!
Dodie Mercer says
I think we’re finally on the other side of the heat and humidity!! It’s been killing my long runs all summer. Hopefully we get good weather for race day!
kookyrunner says
The humidity is just such an energy zapper! Glad to hear that the weather by you in finally getting better. I hope we’re next!
HoHo Runs says
That man/woman graphic is so true. And so unfair! Congrats on the double digits, especially in the humidity. I’ve been bailing on way too many runs lately due to that. It seems I remember several people doing StepBet (I think Tricia did) but I never got into it. I quit tracking my steps after going through two FitBits in one year. Thanks for linking.
kookyrunner says
Right?! I swear men can change one little thing and lose so much weight. Totally not fair at all!
I don’t blame you for not wanting to do long runs in this crazy weather. I probably wouldn’t do it if I didn’t have a race to train for.
De Bolton says
This week was beyond fast. I reallt think I missed Wednesday somehow. Look at your work? I am in awe of long distance runners. I wish I had that mental toughness. Good work getting closer!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much De!
Sandra D Laflamme says
Great job with your training especially your 10 miler. I think I saw that funny meme on your facebook page. So very true! LOL
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sandra!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Congrats on getting back to double digits! The humidity has just been awful – I’m so over it!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle! We’ve actually gotten a break in the humidity this week and I couldn’t be happier!
Esther says
I hear ya with finding balance with different workouts! There are never enough hours in the day for everything! Haha
Great job on your 10 miles! I hope your hip stays healthy and out of pain for you!
That shirt still cracks me up!
Have a great week!
kookyrunner says
Sometimes I wish there was just one more hour in the day so I could fit everything in, lol
Renรฉe @runlaugheatpie says
you had a kickass week! then you say you are lazy when it comes to your PT exercises???? I don’t think so! the way I see it is, it’s not as fun as running, cycling, spinning, strength training so it gets put by the way side. I have the EXACT same problem. BUT if you think about it you don’t even HAVE to do 15 min. If you could just do it a few minutes a day, a few times, it could still have benefits! I’m doing this now and I find that the foam rolling is now a regular thing! So many torture devices to choose from too haha!
well done on you 10 miler too! hopefully the hips will start adjusting to the longer runs very soon!! How many more weeks??? 6?
kookyrunner says
Just 3 more weeks until the race – I can hardly believe it. This was a very shortened training cycle but it’s still going by super quick.
You’re so right about just doing a few minutes of the PT moves. I’ve started doing a few when I first wake up in the morning and it’s been helpful.
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
That weight loss graphic feels so true! I’ve been really struggling with my own weight loss since the beginning of the year, yet my husband has no issues whatsoever. Argh!!!!!
kookyrunner says
LOL, it’s so annoying that men can lose or maintain their weight so easily while we are always killing ourselves to lose a pound!
