On Saturday I ran the 4th annual Run for Waterside 5K. This was my third year running the race. My job was a sponsor for the run and has a very close relationship with the school. Due to this any employees that want to run the race get to do so for free – yay! A free race that benefits a local school – sign me up!
Unfortunately Hurricane Joaquin decided to visit the East Coast last week so the weather for the run was kind of blah 🙁 Luckily we didn’t get a lot of flooding in Stamford and it stopped raining long enough for us to run the race….but it was very windy and COLD! Granted the temperature was in the low 40s but it felt like straight up winter!

This is a local race with a few hundred runners. Since the race starts and ends at Waterside School, its a very family friendly race. Adults, children and dogs can all run 🙂 The course is primarily flat and most of the race takes place on the streets near the school. Part of the last mile is in a park which is where things get interesting. It’s not exactly trail running, but the ground is not exactly flat either. I definitely felt myself getting slower during this part, which sucked because it was the last mile and I wanted to pick up the pace.

One thing to note about this race is that they do not have water stops along the course. This didn’t bother me as it was a 5K race, but I could see where some runners may not like this. After the race participants can go inside the school to enjoy water, fruit, bagels, etc. The spread is usually pretty good but this year the ladies and I decided to go to a local diner to enjoy some pancakes 🙂 Unfortunately I didn’t get to snap any photos before the race, but I was able to capture photos of the ladies crossing the finish line!
I actually had no expectations for this race, but somehow I got a PR. Not sure how that happened since I didn’t feel like I was running faster than normal, but I’ll take it! My time was 28:20 which is a minute faster than my previous PR from last year. As usual, my splits were a reverse progression run – haha. Started out too fast and then never recovered. Besides that, I actually looked at my results and saw that I was 46/144 for women and 130/306 overall. Granted those probably aren’t great numbers to many, but to me they were great!
My next race is Rock ‘n’ Roll Brooklyn taking place this Saturday. It’s my last RnR race this year and I’m looking forward to running through Brooklyn for the second time this year!
Before ending this blog, I want to give a HUGE shoutout to ALL the awesome runners this weekend that flooded my Instagram and Twitter timelines. From Ragnar DC to Wineglass Marathon to ultra marathons, everyone killed it this weekend. Special shoutout to the super sweet Annmarie on not only running, but owning her first marathon this weekend – so proud of you my friend!
