Disclaimer: Let’s get the legal stuff out of the way first. I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review but all opinions below are my own and I was not compensated for this post.
I really enjoy working with Blogging for Books because it gives me the opportunity to read and review books that are not really on my radar. I often focus so much on running books that I miss out on other great books, especially cookbooks.
Soul Food Love: Healthy Recipes Inspired by One Hundred Years of Cooking in a Black Family is a unique cookbook written by Alice Randall and Caroline Randall Williams.
I love the fact that this cookbook is written by a mother-daughter. I just think it adds an extra layer of authenticity to have two generations of women contributing to the cookbook.
I also love the health aspect of the cookbook. Basically Alice was sick of being overweight and with the help of her daughter Caroline, they overhauled their traditional family recipes handed down by generation of women and made those recipes healthier. There is often a connection between soul food and unhealthy food so I love that this cookbook helps to debunk that myth.
The cookbook is broken up into the following categories:
Sips & Bites
Soups
Main Dishes
Sides & Salads
Desserts
Crowns
For a Crowd
I’m not a food blogger (far from it!), so I never take photos of my meals because the photos always come out awful, but I’ve cooked the following recipes from the cookbook:
Dear’s Ice Cubes – Very simple recipe of fruit infused ice cubes
George Washington Carver’s Homemade Peanut Butter – I LOVE peanut butter but have never made my own – this recipe did not disappoint!
Turkey Burgers – This recipe finally produced a juicy turkey burger!
Shrimp Salad – Simple and very clean recipe.
Simple Spinach – I cook spinach all the time but the addition of lemon really amped up the flavor!
If you’re looking for a different kind of cookbook, I would really recommend this one because a lot of the recipes combine ingredients that you wouldn’t typically expect to be together, but they work so well.
Do you enjoy using cookbooks or do you make up your own recipes?

I'm not creative enough to come up with my own recipes, but I do often modify the ones I'm cooking with. This cookbook sounds interesting!

Me too! Whenever I try to "make up a recipe" it's usually a huge FAIL 90% of the time lol
