I’ve been wanting to try yoga for a while, but could never find a class at the gym to fit within my current exercise schedule. Last week I noticed that my gym was offering a 4:30 class on Fridays – perfect! I could take the class right after work and still have the rest of my Friday night to enjoy Netflix 🙂
Let me start off by saying that I didn’t think yoga would be “my thing”. It’s incredibly hard for me to shut my brain off and get “in the zone” because I am constantly thinking about work, or my training, or the list of things I have to do. That being said, I know that yoga is great for runners. I also have knee and hip pain so I am hoping that yoga can help alleviate some of the pain I feel in those two areas during my long runs.
I didn’t really know what to expect when I got to class. I was a little nervous because the only yoga poses I know are downward dog and child’s pose – lol. While I don’t remember all the yoga poses and terms that were used during the class, I have to say that I really enjoyed it! The teacher was super nice and you could tell she has been practicing yoga for a long time. I also liked the fact that she was really helpful and would give pointers on how to fix our posture if we weren’t doing a pose the correct way.

After the class I did feel more relaxed. I haven’t really felt any difference in my joints but I guess that comes with time. I think this class is a permanent yoga class at my gym so I plan on being consistent and attending every Friday. Once I learn more about the poses and how to do them correctly, I’ll try to replicate these at home. I’m looking forward to seeing how yoga can help with my running!
Have you ever tried a yoga class? If so, do you think it has improved your running?

Congrats on trying out yoga! I'm doing the same thing and I'm trying out every yoga studio in town to see which one I like the best. I've done the same class twice already and I love how I'm already more relaxed and confident. Good luck with classes!

Thanks Kristen! I'm hoping that once I do it more often I will start to like it more and more!
