Happy Tuesday! This week we have a FREE topic, so you can write about any running related topic. Since I’ve been using Great Lakes Gelatin collagen products for almost a year, I thought that would be a great topic for today. A lot of athletes uses collagen because of all the great benefits. As a runner, I was really interested in using collagen to help with my joints.
This week’s Tuesday Topic: FREE topic! You can write about any running related topic. Remember to Link-up with Kim and Zenaida and the bottom of this post!
Here are a few reasons why I love using Great Lakes Gelatin collagen products.
Great Source of Protein
I use the collagen hydrolysate and collagen endurance plus products. The collagen hydrolysate has 11 grams of protein per serving and the collagen endurance plus has 14.5 grams per serving. One of my goals this year is to get more protein in my diet and this is a perfect solution. I usually add the collagen hydrolysate to my morning cup of tea or coffee and I enjoy the collagen endurance plus when I workout.
Add to Food or Drinks
The collagen hydrolysate is flavorless and odorless, so you can really add it to almost anything. I have added it to drinks, smoothies, baked goods and salad dressings. I use the collagen hydrolysate in one of my favorite smoothies (recipe here). Between the protein powder and the collagen, it’s super packed with protein and it’s a great way to start my day or nice to drink after a hard workout.
Improved Mobility
One of the main reasons I wanted to try collagen was because it’s supposed to be great for your joint and bone health. It also helps with mobility. Besides a few days this month, I will say that I’ve noticed a decrease in sore/achy joints and muscle fatigue. I have also noticed that I’m slightly more flexible. When I do my pre and post workout stretches I am able to breathe into the stretch more. By no means am I super flexible, but I’m not as tight so that’s a win-win in my book.

I haven’t tried the performance version, but I’ve tried the regular one. Am I the only person who does notice a taste? I do. It’s not horrible, but it’s there for me. I really wanted to love it like everyone else.
kookyrunner says
I actually never noticed a taste on the regular version. I mainly use it in my hot beverages most of the time.
Wendy says
Drinking my GLG enhanced coffee as I read this! Good stuff.
kookyrunner says
I’m also drinking my GLG enhanced coffee as I write this 🙂
Zenaida Arroyo says
I have also been using the collagen hydrolysate in my coffee. I love that you cannot taste it but still getting some good stuff in me. Now I need to check out the collagen endurance plus.
kookyrunner says
Totally agree with what you said about the hydrolysate. The endurance is really good and I like that it’s not too sweet.
Melissa says
Ooh I have never heard of this!! But maybe i should try it out? Bone health is definitely important to me!
kookyrunner says
Definitely try it out!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
Have never used collagen products but that’s interesting! I’m bad at supplements I’ll buy them and then forget to use them lol.
kookyrunner says
LOL I used to be the same way but now I position them in my kitchen where I’m more likely to use them.
Cari says
Ooh I love that smoothie recipe, thanks for linking back to it
kookyrunner says
You’re welcome!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
I so wish there was a vegetarian option for this! I am so glad that it is working so well for you
kookyrunner says
Me too! I have asked them if they are thinking of making one but they aren’t sure yet.

I have also been mixing the GLG into my morning chai, and I notice a slight taste/scent (I have a bionic sense of smell, though). It’s not unpleasant…kind of a vanilla or almond essence (?). That said, it may be too soon to have marked results from it (it’s only been a couple months for me), but I have noticed my usually achy hamstrings have been feeling pretty neutral. With all the treadmill miles I’ve logged, that is quite an amazing thing!
kookyrunner says
Sometimes I do notice a slight smell but it’s rare. I’m glad that your hamstring doesn’t feel as achy now!
The Accidental Marathoner says
I started using GLG Collagen Hydrolysate on December 1st, so I am now at three months. I honestly haven’t noticed a difference – though I didn’t have joint pain to start with. I read the research and it made sense to me. I thought I would use it for an entire year and see how I feel at that point. I mix it in my coffee and while there is the slightest subtle taste, it is not unpleasant and it is barely noticeable.
kookyrunner says
When I first started using it, I noticed the change first in my nails and hair. My hait was longer and my nails were stronger. I started seeing some joint differences around the 4/5 month mark.
Laurie says
Gotta love those collagen products as we runners age. Protecting our joints is so necessary!
kookyrunner says
Definitely so important!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I started using GLG after stopping by their booth at RnR Chicago. I love it – it’s always in my coffee now! I still need to try the Endurance.
kookyrunner says
I can bring you up a canister of the Endurance when I see you in Boston in a few months!
Debbie says
I’m glad you found something that works so well for you. I see so many people who really love using collagen.
kookyrunner says
I was skeptical at first but I really do see the difference.
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
I’ve heard great things about that stuff. I really need to give it a try.
kookyrunner says
Let me know if you try it!
Sandy says
I don’t use it because I’m a vegetarian but once they make a veggie version, I’ll be all over it! It seems like a great product!
kookyrunner says
I wish they would make a vegetarian option! I did ask them about this but they said they were still looking into it.
Chris Tiley says
Thanks for the review, I will try these out.
kookyrunner says
you’re welcome!
Jenny Albertson says
I keep hearing about collagen but I’ve been trying to add it to my diet without extra powders and things. If I can get enough of it through my diet I’d be happy!
kookyrunner says
Definitely! It’s probably a little hard to get all you need through food, but the powder is pretty clean so I feel safe taking it.
Elaine says
I use the GLG unflavored kind usually in my morning coffee. I think it has helped with my sore joints.
kookyrunner says
I’ve noticed a difference with my joints as well.
jenn says
It’s always great to find something you love!
I don’t use collagen products. I’m not one for smoothies or anything like that, so I don’t usually add things like this to my diet. However, I know you and others have had great results and I love that you have found something that works so well for you!
kookyrunner says
totally understand. It’s all about what works for you!
Marc Pelerin says
This is interesting… I’ve never really heard of this. It looks like a good product to use to supplement a healthy, active food choice.
kookyrunner says
I didn’t know too much about collagen until last year but I think that it has definitely helped with my joints.
Jen says
Thanks to your post, I may try it. My mom has been drinking it for years. Thanks for the info!
kookyrunner says
No problem!
Darlene says
Have never tried it. I would if it were free though.
