Welcome to another edition of Tuesday Topics! I’m super excited about today’s topic – interview one of your running friends. I decided to interview Kim. No, I didn’t interview myself, lol. I spoke to my friend Kim from Running on the Fly! She’s an avid runner, completing races ranging from 5Ks to Ultra Marathons. Read on to learn more about how Kim got into running and a few of her favorite things about the sport.
How long have you been running?
I’ve been running for almost 15 years, although there were a few 5K’s before that (and I had no clue what I was doing in them LOL).
Why did you start running?
I had a desire to tone up. I didn’t want to lose weight, but I definitely didn’t have much for strength or endurance. Also, I had a class reunion coming up later that summer π
What is your favorite race?
My favorite race, hands down, is DAM to DSM 20K (formerly Dam to Dam). It’s the first long distance race I’d ever done, so it has huge sentimental ties to my running heart. I first ran it in 2008 and was instantly hooked, and have gone back every year since.
What is your favorite race distance?
My favorite race distance is the 20K/13.1. It’s long enough that it requires some training, but it’s not too long that the training is overwhelming.
What advice do you have for new runners?
I’d say take your time figuring out what works for YOU. Runners don’t need to run daily. They don’t need to run fast, they don’t need to run far. Some will need more recovery time than others. Not every run (or race) will feel great. Runners also don’t need to run races, nor do they need to “race” them either.
How has COVID-19 affected your running?
Honestly, it has not really affected me (except for canceling/postponing all of my Spring 2020 races LOL). I’m pretty good at staying motivated on my own, but the influx of virtual races has been a great distraction from all the current turmoil. Also, there’s been a lot more support and encouragement among my running friends, which has been a wonderful side-effect
What is your favorite running song?
I love classic rock! Anything AC/DC will suit me just fine, but my favorite song is “It’s a Long Way to the Top if You Wanna Rock and Roll.”
What is your favorite post run food?
I’m not usually hungry after a run or a race (even a long distance), but I’m usually craving something sweet…give me a Pepsi and I’m good for awhile!
Thanks so much for the interview Kim π

Awhhhh <3 Thank,s #KimTwin π Not only am I flattered you'd chose me for this, but I'm more than grateful for our friendship. Now, if I could just convince you to come to Iowa in July and run the (hilly) Bix-7 with me….Hugs to you!!!

Thanks for allowing me to interview you!
I would come to Iowa for a Fall race – maybe 2021!

The two kims! Nice. I find it interesting that Kim chose running for toning up!
kookyrunner says
Me too – It definitely worked though!
Catrina says
What a great idea and nice to get to know βIowa-Kimβ even better!
Great advice for new runners, just do your own thing. It’s so easy to get caught up in stressful races and paces and then it’s not fun anymore.

Thanks! I love all the advice that Kim provided in the interview too.

Fun idea for a post!

Thanks!

Love this interview! Kim provided some great advice for new runners. I think there are so many preconceptions that hold people back from giving it a try. Running can be whatever you want it to be!
kookyrunner says
I totally agree! I really wish I had read more running blogs before I started running. It would have been so helpful to read opinions from everyone.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Great choice! I always appreciate Kim’s positive attitude!
kookyrunner says
Right?! It’s one of my favorite things about her!

Great interview.I have met Kim in person and read her blog but still learned a few things .like why she started running.
kookyrunner says
I learned a lot also even though we’ve been friends for a few years.

A fun idea for a post. It’s always cool to see what other runners eat and do. Love Kim too! xoxo

Totally agree! I think I want to do these types of posts more often.

Finally (Wednesday evening), my laptop has allowed me onto the link-up to comment! LOL. I love that you interviewed Kim. I haven’t met her but feel like I know her well, but this interview revealed some new things, why she started running for one! I also hold my first long distance race close to my heart. I’ve since had better times and even races, but my first will always hold such close sentimental value.

Happy you were able to log on! Gotta love technology right? Like both you and Kim, I definitely fondly remember my first half marathon, probably better than my first marathon, lol.
Zenaida Arroyo says
I love this! I’ve haven’t met KIm either and most likely won’t happen this year. π I love that we at least have Zoom!
kookyrunner says
Yes, thank goodness for Zoom to help us stay connected!
