Happy Tuesday! It’s time for another edition of Tuesday Topics. This week’s Tuesday Topic: Do you wear makeup while running? You can write about this or any running related blog post. Remember to link-up with Kim and Zenaida and the bottom of this post!
There are two main reasons I don’t wear makeup when I run..
1.) I actually don’t wear a lot of makeup “in real life” so I never think to put any on for a run
2.) I have pretty sensitive skin so makeup + sweat = disaster for my pores. It’s just best that I don’t wear it at all.
That being said, there are two basic things I put on my face for all of my outdoor runs:
Sunscreen
This is an absolute must for all outdoor runs, especially in the summer. I’ll admit that sometimes I forget to put it on in the Winter but I’m working on getting better about that. I’m all about minimizing the amount of sun damage to my face as much as possible.
Chapstick
My lips tend to get very dry when I run outdoors so I always apply chapstick before I leave the house and I usually run with it as well. There’s nothing worse than chapped lips, especially in the Winter!
Tell me: Do you wear makeup while running?

Topic for next week – What are some of the best things you’ve seen at a race or a run? Feel free to write about this or any running related topic. We hope you’ll link up with us!

It’s funny, I didn’t write on this subject because it didn’t really grab me — but it sort of ties into what I did write about. I started a book a while ago about women runners in the 40s or 50s. How they would wear full makeup when they competed. And we know so many Olympians do, too!
I’m a firm believer that if you feel good about yourself, you do good (running & in life). So I say if it makes you feel good, go for it!
So yes, I’m in the no makeup camp. I agree on the sunscreen, and I do wear a lip balm that has some SPF in it. You can get cancer on your lips, too! And sunglasses, almost always.

I really enjoyed your blog post this morning – I learned a lot about women’s running 🙂
Same here – if wearing makeup while running makes the run more enjoyable, I say got for it!
Darlene says
I do forget about sunscreen in the winter. And in the wind I need lip gloss because my lips get chapped.
It’s weird during the pandemic. I’ve gotten lazy about my face since no one sees it behind my mask.
kookyrunner says
My dermatologist is always reminding me to wear sunscreen in the Winter so I’m trying to get better about doing that – but I still forget sometimes.
Catrina says
I don’t wear any make-up, either. Like you, I do apply sunscreen, especially in the summer when the sun it out. I forget it on cloudy and overcast days, too!
I admire those female top athletes with all the make-up and jewellery. I could never even lightly jog like that, and yet they go out and smash world records! Very cool!
kookyrunner says
Me too! I really wish I could run with earrings or rings since those are things I wear daily, but I just find that they get in the way.
Kimberly Hatting says
While I don’t do full-on make-up, I seldom leave the house without eyeliner and lipstick. I know I look better (much less scary LOL) with a little “something.” My skin is super sensitive (and dry), so I have to use mineral powder for any coverage, which is real light anyways. And lipstick…it’s my secret weapon! Besides, my lips need coverage anyways, might as well add a little shimmer 😉
kookyrunner says
The main issue is – I’m horrible at doing makeup, lol. I have tried numerous times to apply eyeliner and fail miserably every time and end up poking my eye. I love that you run with lipstick – you always pick the best colors!
Denise @runheartfit says
Like you, I don’t wear much makeup but I do wear sunscreen year round and lip balm with sunscreen.
I think the athletes that wear full makeup and jewelry do because they are on TV and it’s their profession and they want to look and feel their best. I probably would too if I was them.
kookyrunner says
Definitely! If I were an elite athlete running on TV I would put on some makeup for sure!
Jessie says
I definitely wear less makeup these days than in the past! But I still often put on mascara as my lashes are pretty light, but not for early morning runs 🙂
Sunscreen and chapstick are important ones!
kookyrunner says
If I was actually good at applying makeup, I would definitely try to use eyeliner.
San says
I didn’t link up because I felt like I didn’t have much to say on the topic – other than: I don’t wear makeup when I work out. Period. LOL It seems counterintuitive, especially since I sweat a lot and I think I would look pretty awful with makeup running down my face. Also, I hate how dirty towels get when your sweat is tinted.
I do, however, wear sunscreen when I am outdoors. Always.
kookyrunner says
I also sweat a lot as well so that’s another reason I don’t wear makeup on the run either, lol.
Laurie says
Ha! Now that I have retired, I almost never wear makeup at all. Maybe once or twice a year! I never wear makeup in a run and never did. Like you, I always wear sunscreen.
Jenn says
While I don’t wear it on training runs, I will put on mascara, a foundation or concealer with SPF and chapstick for races or destinations runs.
kookyrunner says
It’s great that so many foundations and concealers now have SPF protection!
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
Hard pass on wearing makeup while I run. I barely wear makeup when I’m not running anymore!
kookyrunner says
Same for me, lol.
Deborah Brooks says
My dermatologist has drilled into me the importance of sunscreen year round. I wear one with a tint and I like how it evens out my skin. i always wear a lip sunscreen as well with tint of color. A little eye liner is usually found as well. Just helps to make me feel a little more confident for those selfies!
kookyrunner says
I have considered using sunscreen with a tint but I haven’t found one that I like yet. That would definitely be my preference though as I think it would help to even out my skin tone.
Marcia says
Nope, makeup is not happening here when I run. A little lip balm and I’m good to go. I runfess I’d rather run very early and with a brimmed hat on before the sun is an issue and/or seek a shady trail before running with sunscreen, but I do use a tinted sunscreen on my face for the rest of the day.
kookyrunner says
Yeah I feel like as long as I have my lip balm I’m good to go!
Zenaida Arroyo says
No makeup for me either. I just received from Amazon my Neutrogena face stick sunscreen. Gonna start tomorrow.
kookyrunner says
The stick sunscreen sounds interesting. Curious to see how you end up liking it!
Shathiso says
I actually wear NO make up in real-life, unless its a huge occasion. BUT when I’m having a bad day and need to feel good on a run, I put on some bright lipstick! Sunscreen is a must even on a cloudy day here.
kookyrunner says
Bight lipstick can always make a bad day much better!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I never wear makeup while running, lol! The only time I did was when I did the Disney Princess 10K – I have to admit the pictures turned out really nice! But I should definitely wear more sunscreen on my face!
kookyrunner says
The Disney Princess 10K is definitely a race where you would want to wear makeup! 🙂
Cari says
I’m with you on both sensitive skin and not a makeup wearer. Chapstick and moisturizer, especially in the wind, are my essentials. Sunscreen in my eyes when I don’t have my sport stick is already a disaster, can’t imagine adding makeup to that
kookyrunner says
Oh sunscreen in the eyes is the worst! I tried a sunscreen a few years ago that was horrible because when I started to sweat it went right into my eyes. I had to cut the run short and come home since my eyes were burning.
Michelle D. says
Moisturizer with an SPF and lip balm is it for me. The thought of dealing with sweat and makeup on a run is just not pretty LOL
kookyrunner says
Same here, but when I look at some of my race photos, it makes me wish I did put on makeup, lol.
