Happy Tuesday! Can you believe it’s already September? I’m so excited that this month will *hopefully* usher in some cooler weather! As Fall official starts on September 23rd, it’s time to start talking about our fall race schedules!
This week’s Tuesday Topic: What’s on your Fall race schedule? You can write about this or any running related blog post. Remember to Link-up with Kim and Zenaida and the bottom of this post!
While I hate summer training, I absolutely love Fall racing! These are the races I currently have planned, but I’m sure I will add more.
This race offers a 5K and half marathon. I’ve done the half marathon twice but this year I’m going to do the 5K. This will also serve as my last long run before the Chicago Marathon (8 miles) so I’ll run a few miles before and after the 5K to hit that distance. This race always has the best swag, medals and post-race food so I’m looking forward to it!
International Chicago 5K – October 12
I’ll be using this race as a shakeout run before the marathon. I didn’t run this race the last time I did the marathon but my mom did and she enjoyed it. It should be a good time!
Bank of America Chicago Marathon – October 13
This is the big one! I’m really, really hoping that I have a much better experience at this race. I’ve been calling this my redemption race because I just had to come back and conquer Chicago. Having to unexpectedly walk over half a marathon is never a good thing, and that’s what happened to me in 2017. I’ve been feeling good about my training so far and I’m hoping that it will pay off on race day. I’m not looking for a marathon PR but I am hoping for a course PR.
Run for Waterside 5K – October 19
Nothing better than a 5K race the week after a marathon to get the legs moving! I’ve done this race several times and it’s always great. I also love that the proceeds benefit a local school.
Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K – November 2
I’ve literally lost count how many times I’ve done this race. While it can be a little annoying because it’s super crowded and people literally just stop in the middle of the course and take photos, it’s fun because it’s the day before the NYC Marathon and you really just can’t beat that energy! My mom and I usually make a morning out of it by grabbing breakfast after the race and doing a little shopping before heading home.
Tell me: What’s on your Fall race schedule?

Nice line-up. I’m definitely doing the Richmond Half in November. I’m also planning on doing the Reston 10 in 3 weeks — possibly the 10k instead of the 10 miler. I think that’s it. Running is just so hard lately.
kookyrunner says
Running this summer has really been so difficult. Hopefully we will be blessed with better Fall running weather.
Zenaida Arroyo says
I also hope you have a great race in Chicago! I hope to see you too. I am thinking of heading over to NY to spectate the marathon. I will keep you posted and hopefully meet up.
kookyrunner says
Yes keep my updated! I usually go in to spectate around mile 18.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
As I said in my blog, nothing right now! Literally. There will at the very least be some shorter races — or so I hope, you can never take anything for granted.
I am willing to bet that you’re going to have a much, much better time at Chicago this year — literally & figuratively. You’ve done a great job with your training!
I only did Dash to Finish Line once, but I agree it was both fun & incredibly frustrating at the end, too!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Judy! I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well in Chicago.
Yes! That Dash race is such an odd one because every year when I finish the race I say I’m not doing it again, but there’s just something about it that keeps me coming back!
Kimberly Hatting says
I’m a believer in recovery runs the day following a big run or race, and also for a race the weekend following a marathon…it does keep the body moving, and it feels awesome having the BIG race in the rear window! There’s never any pressure to run fast or PR (because…umm, recovering!), so that makes it (usually) enjoyable.
kookyrunner says
That’s true. I figured my body should be able to handle at least a 5K a week after the marathon, lol.
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
That is a nice fall line up. Those 5k’s will be a nice change of pace for you before the marathon.
kookyrunner says
That’s what I’m hoping too – it will be nice to run shorter distances.
Marielle Burch says
Looks like you have a great schedule coming up!!! I love running in the fall, it’s my favorite time of year to do races! I just did a 5K this past weekend and now I want to get some more on the calendar!
kookyrunner says
Fall is such a great time for races!
Black Knight says
A very good schedule.
I am sure you will have a great race in Chicago.
Have a good september.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much!
Debbie says
I can’t believe it’s almost time for Chicago! The time has gone quickly (and I’m not even training for it! I’m sure you’ll have a much better race this year.
I only have one race, the Temecula Half Marathon on my schedule right now. It’s on October 20 but I’ll probably add a 5k or two along the way. I’m also an alternate for Ragnar Trail So Cal on November 8/9, so I may end up doing that. I really want to do it again but I don’t want to wish harm on my teammates so…
kookyrunner says
The training has gone by pretty quickly for Chicago, but I’m excited for race day!
Rachel says
I had to do a double take on Chicago — I was like, “why is she doing a 5K and then going again for the marathon?” Haha.
I LOVE SUMMER RUNNING! And I’m sad it’s almost over. But yay for fall racing because it’s so much fun. 🙂
kookyrunner says
LOL yeah I figured the 5K would be fun and a nice shakeout run too.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I like that you’ve already got some post-Chicago races planned! I figured I’d wait to see if my legs and I will be on speaking terms before I plan anything else LOL! Hopefully, I’ll jump into a couple of local 5ks late in the season.
kookyrunner says
LOL! I don’t have any long races planned but I know I’ll be able to deal with a few 5Ks, even if I have to walk them.
Cari says
Wasn’t reading you yet in 2017 so wsan’t familiar with what went wrong for you in Chicago. I have no doubt you’ll have a course PR
Happy to say hi after Dash. Not running, but I will be a ball of nervous energy. Let me know your plans closer to
kookyrunner says
Thanks Cari! Will definitely let you know about my Dash plans. I ran it the year I did the marathon to release some of my nerves!
