Happy Tuesday! It’s time for another edition of Tuesday Topics. This week’s Tuesday Topic: My Non-Running Hobbies. Remember to link-up with Kim and Zenaida and the bottom of this post.
Yes, runners talk about running a lot (shocker)! But contrary to popular belief, we do things besides run. I enjoy lots of other forms of exercise, and a few other hobbies as well. Here are my non-running hobbies.
Strength Training
This should come as no surprise to anyone, but I absolutely love strength training – sometimes I like it more than running. I think I love it so much because of the variety. If I only have time for 10 minutes, that’s fine because I can focus on one muscle group and get in a great workout. Sometimes I have more time so I will opt for a 45 minute class. I love feeling strong after a hard workout lifting weights. Not only does this make me a stronger runner, it also makes me stronger overall.
Cycling
Many, many years ago I taught spinning for a year. It was an interesting experience, but ultimately taught me that I prefer to take a class vs instruct a class. I’m not like a super athlete on the bike or anything, but I do enjoy taking several Peloton classes a week. I also find that cycling is great for dealing with leg soreness after a run or an intense strength training class.
Couponing
I’m not a crazy coupon lady BUT I do use them quite regularly, especially when grocery shopping. Around 12 years ago I was unemployed for a while and I really utilized coupons to make my money stretch further. Although I’m better off financially now, that mindset stuck with me. Digital coupons that I can load to my store loyalty card are the main way I save money during a shopping trip. I think it’s a good hobby because it keeps more money in my pocket 🙂

Couponing! I love that!
We don’t have much couponing in Switzerland or in South Africa, but there are promotions where you can get good deals. Like you, we don’t “need” to watch every penny, but I hate spending money unnecessarily.
One of the most helpful tools for me was tracking expenditure. Everything, even if it’s only money for a parking meter. When I started doing it over 10 years ago, it was quite revealing to see where the money goes to. It helped to discover some good saving potential.

I love a good sale/promotion too! I also track my spending via an excel sheet. You’re right that it can be so eye opening. It really showed me where I needed to cut back.

Well, obviously Yoga, hiking, walking, strength training. I love Pilates, too, but can rarely fit that in!
Love to read, love movies (but rarely find the time to watch them now).
I used to draw & paint. I’ve been a WW leader and a stripper (it’s a printing job, LOL!).

I have tried Pilates a few times but just never got the hang of it. I wish I could because I know so many people that love it!
I used to paint too – I was never great at it but it was fun!

Hmm, well strength training and cycling came as no surprise, but couponing is one I didn’t expect! For myself, I don’t know that I would call strength training a “hobby”- it’s just something I do to get better at running. I guess I would call yoga a hobby, and of course reading. Boy, I feel kind of boring. Maybe I need some new interests!
kookyrunner says
Not boring at all! I think you can definitely consider yoga and strength training hobbies.

As you know, cycling has really inched its way to the top of my fitness must-do’s. Running is still #1, but cycling is a very closed second (with strength-training in contention for a tie). I totally agree with cycling/spinning being a solid discipline…it’s really enhanced my running and it’s a great recovery vice. You probably know my hobbies…art, knitting, photography.

I love how you’ve embraced more cycling! I agree that cycling (and also strength training) have made me a better runner. I’m not necessarily a faster runner, but I feel like I am a stronger and smarter runner.

My mom “thinks” she can coupon but we have other people in our family that take it to the next level and get free stuff in bulk! I think that’s pretty neat though! I also didn’t know you taught cycling before. How cool!
kookyrunner says
Free stuff in bulk in my jam! I haven’t been able to do that in years due to Covid and now inflation, but it was fun while it lasted, lol.

I also taught spin classes back in the day! I really enjoyed it for a while but ultimately I would also rather take a class than teach one. You know I share your love of strength training as well
kookyrunner says
I didn’t know that you used to teach spin classes too! Yeah, it’s just much more enjoyable when you can take the class and not have to design a playlist and do all cues, etc.

I clip a coupon here and there but that’s it. I remember years ago we would get the Sunday paper and there would be a lot of coupons there. You bet I would go through them to see what I needed to buy.
kookyrunner says
I used to do that too but then I noticed less and less coupons in the Sunday paper 🙁

I love digital coupons, but I really wish there was one app to tame them all since I’m forever behind on my email. Didn’t remember you taught spinning. How fun!
kookyrunner says
I agree! It would be great to have one app for all of the digital coupons. I’m sure there are apps out there that I don’t even know about lol
