Happy Sunday! This week I started embracing the taper, and boy is it fun! It really is my favorite part of training. I love having extra time to do more stretching and foam rolling, and the shorter distance runs are great too.
Here’s my recap for week 12 of marathon training:
Monday, September 23
OrangeTheory Fitness – Power (60 minutes).
Nothing better than starting off the week than with an OTF workout! I was also pleasantly surprised to come home to the official participant guide for the Chicago Marathon! 🙂
Tuesday, September 24
4 mile run + core work (20 minutes).
After being in NYC for a few work events, a shorter run in the evening felt good!
Wednesday, September 25
OrangeTheory Fitness – Endurance (60 minutes).
It’s crazy how hard this workout was, but I guess you can tell that from my stats, lol. I felt like I was non-stop sweating the entire time. There were tons of push paces on the treadmill (no walking recoveries) and the floor block was a mix of heavy weights and hitting up the rower for 500 meters after each set was complete.
Thursday, September 26
5 mile run + core work (10 minutes).
I was still feeling sore from my OTF workouts but luckily my legs still remembered how to move, lol
Friday, September 27
Rest Day!
Saturday, September 28
14 mile run.
Last double digit run before the marathon! Overall the run went well but it took me about 3 or 4 miles before I finally hit my groove.
Sunday, September 29
OrangeTheory Fitness #DriTri Event
What to do the day after a 14 mile training run? Why do the OrangeTheory Fitness DriTri of course! The DriTri consists of a 2,000 meter row, 300 bodyweight exercises and a 5K treadmill run (in that order).
It was hard since my legs really weren’t feeling it but I wanted to finish in under an hour and I did (56:35), so I’m happy with that. I will attempt to get a better time when I do it again next Spring. Definitely an interesting way to end the week!
Total Weekly Mileage: 31 miles
Marathon Training Miles: 330.7 miles
Summary: 6 runs, 2 strength training workouts, 2 core workouts, 1 Dri Tri event
Grade This Week – A
I ran a few more miles that anticipated this week due to OTF classes and the DriTri, but I’m still considering this part of the taper since my weekly runs weren’t that long. I didn’t get in any spinning this week and not a lot of core work either. I’m not too happy about that I’ll make up for it this week.
My Chicago Marathon items that I ordered from Nike.com arrived on Thursday. I really love the tank that I ordered but I was not loving the zip up hoodie. For $90 I expect more than an ironed on logo. I know that the official marathon gear is normally more expensive, but I just think that the quality of the hoodie was way below what they are charging for it, so I’ll be sending it back for a refund next week. Although I’m keeping the tank, I am not going to wear it until after the race is over – I’m very I’m superstitious!
In other news, the official Chicago Marathon race shirt was released and from what I can see in the post, I really like it! I’m a huge fan of red race shirts (probably because I’m an Aries), so this gets a thumbs up from me!
That’s it! I hope you had a great week 🙂
I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

Great week Kim! I love all of the OTF workouts – that Dri Tri looks really challenging!
I’m glad you’re planning to return the hoodie – I would have expected better from Nike. I am loving that race shirt though 😉
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle! I’m just sitting here waiting for the soreness from the DriTri to settle in, lol.
Yeah Nike really dropped the ball on the hoodie 🙁
Meranda@Fairytalesnfit says
Great week! Can’t wait to hear how the race goes!
kookyrunner says
Thanks!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
So many of you are running Chicago this year! It’s been really fun to watch your training and see how you have progressed. It’s almost here!
kookyrunner says
Yes! I’m surprised at how many people are running Chicago this year. I’m looking forward to meeting up with as many people as possible.
Zenaida Arroyo says
My goal is to one day be on that cover of that Participant Guide. Haha! 🙂 Ugh, I have never liked any of the marathon gear, except one year I did buy a black long sleeve top. And the reason I bought it is because it was at the Nike Outlet Store!!!
kookyrunner says
I really liked the gear from when I ran the race in 2017. I’m hoping that I will see some more cool stuff at the Expo.
Wendy says
I like the Chi Marathon shirt too! I pulled out mine from 2015, just because. All the feels. I’d give anything to run it again, but my body is unlikely to cooperate. Excited for you to tackle it again!
kookyrunner says
I love the Chi Marathon shirt from 2015 – makes me wish I had run that race!
Kimberly Hatting says
Way to go, you are certainly enjoying the taper ride 😉 That dri tri sounds like a fun challenge. I also like the red Chi shirt…but I’m a sucker for anything bright and colorful.
kookyrunner says
LOL, of course you know that I’m also a sucker for bright race shirts 🙂
Marcia says
That DRI TRI sounds so fun but the day after a 14 mile long run? Go you! I think I’d be dead! Bummer the hoodie wasn’t great but I do like the race shirt. It’s totally getting real and I’m excited for you!
kookyrunner says
Yeah, it wasn’t my smartest idea, but I couldn’t fit in my long run earlier in the week unfortunately 🙁 I’m looking forward to doing it again in the Spring when I am not marathon training, LOL.
Looking forward to seeing you at the Expo!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Thats frustrating that the hoodie was not good quality! At least you can return it. Can’t believe how soon your race is! You’re doing so great and I can’t wait to see how the race goes for you!
kookyrunner says
Yeah I was pretty disappointed but glad that I could return it. I’m hoping I see another item at the Expo that I want to buy.
Chaitali says
Sounds like a great week! I’m impressed you did that DriTri the day after running 14 miles 🙂
kookyrunner says
Yeah that wasn’t the smartest decision, lol.
Cari says
Wake up and run. LOL. Saturday mornings for me are way more “run and wake up somewhere along the route”
Way to go on the OTF right after it
I’m indifferent to red shirts, but really love the Bronx 10’s, a two-tone red/pink. Really loving some of the shirts and wishing I’d done some of the races.
kookyrunner says
LOL that’s so true about Saturday long runs. I am really looking forward to waking up at a normal hour on Saturdays after the marathon is over.
I also liked the Bronx 10M shirt this year – makes me wish I had done the race.
Cari says
and their medal had a rhino!
Next year when neither of us is marathon training let’s plan to do one of the NYC or CT weekly ones
kookyrunner says
Sounds like a good plan to me!
Madhusree Basu says
Hats off to your commitment and dedication…keep going, girl!!! 🙂
kookyrunner says
Thanks!
melissa says
Looks like a GREAT week! OTF always sounds so much fun – something I definitely want to do someday!
kookyrunner says
I hope you get a chance to try out to OTF one day.
Sandra D Laflamme says
Bummer about the hoodie but hooray for the taper!!! Nice work with all of the OTF and for getting in your last 14 miler!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sandra!
Chris Tiley says
Great work. Chicago Marathon is on my bucket list. I hope it goes well.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Chris!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
300 body weight exercises? Wow!, that’s kind of insane. Sounds like a good week overall.
That’s too bad about the hoodie. 😔
kookyrunner says
Yup, it was a little crazy but I seem to thrive on crazy, lol.
Liz Dexter says
Hooray taper time!! Enjoy. SLEEP. A shame about the hoodie. I returned my race to the stones one because there was just one type, it turned out, and it said I’d run 100km. 50km isn’t nothing but I wasn’t going to lie on a hoodie! Thankfully, the medal ribbon did say 50km.
Now go and sleep!
kookyrunner says
i have gotten good sleep the last two nights LOL
Jenn says
Another great week! I can’t believe it’s almost here! How exciting for you!i
That dry-tri looks like so much fun! I would totally be in for something like that.
Enjoy the rest of the taper!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Jenn!
RelentlessForwardCommotion says
The Dry Tri looks fun! I’ve yet to try Orange Theory Fitness, but it seems like soooooo many people are loving it!
kookyrunner says
Definitely give OTF a try! Your first class is free!
Esther says
Great work this week lady! Back to back 14 mile run with the dry tri sounds intense!
I am glad you like the marathon shirt! I am not always a fan of race shirts, but sometimes they surprise me!
Happy taper!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much! The combo of the long run, dri tri and then another OTF class on Monday morning had me waving the white flag yesterday lol
Farrah says
That’s sad about the quality of the hoodie. :[ Good thing they’ll refund it! I hope you have lots of fun at the race! :]
kookyrunner says
Yes! So happy I could return it and I might see something at the Expo that I like more.
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
Congrats on the taper and your last double digit run. I love the red shirt! And boo to the bad Nike shirt.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much! I am happy the last double digit run went well.
Hannah says
That sounds like a busy week! The race shirt design looks cool.
kookyrunner says
Yeah I am psyched to get the race shirt next week!
Renée says
Hey Kim, sorry so late to the blog! am still struggling a bit to catch up with everyone.
I do LOVE the official shirt. I wonder what color they will have next year? I like the one you and Ron got two years ago, but this years is even nicer if you ask me! Bummer about the hoodie – but YES I agree, for the price you pay, it should be more than an iron on logo…
So looking forward to seeing you next week! You’ve had a great training cycle, I’m pretty sure you’re going to get your revenge next Sunday!
kookyrunner says
No worries Renee! 🙂
I agree about the shirts – I like the one from 2017 but prefer the one for this year since I like the colors better.
