Happy Sunday! Whoa, what a week! I feel like I blinked and the week was over. This didn’t surprise me since my week was pretty busy, including traveling to Philly on Thursday after work to celebrate my friend’s graduation. As you’ll see, this week was lower in mileage but I’m totally fine with that.
Week 3 of marathon training is in the books! Here’s how my workouts went this week:
Monday, July 22
12 mile run.
Yes, you read that right. I did my long run this week on Monday since that was the best day for me to get it done. Running 12 miles just two days before made this run a little rough. Doing it after work on the treadmill (we had flash flood warnings) was even rougher, but I was glad to get it done and out of the way since I knew it would be hard to get in any activity on Friday or Saturday.
Tuesday, July 23
OrangeTheory Fitness – Power (60 minutes) + core work (10 minutes).
I was actually surprised I burned so many calories in this class since my legs were so tired!
Wednesday, July 24
Spinning (30 minutes) + Boot Camp (60 minutes).
The instructor really focuses a lot on legs during class – so many lunges and squats. At this point in the week, my legs were upset with me, lol.
Thursday, July 25
6 mile run + core work (10 minutes).
Surprisingly this run felt great! Also, this was a great Spotify playlist. I love throwback jams from the 90s π
Friday, July 26
Rest Day π
Saturday, July 27
Rest Day π
Sunday, July 28
City Challenge Obstacle Course Race + core work (10 minutes).
3 miles of 20+ obstacles. It was so HOT – ugh!
Total Weekly Mileage: 20 miles
Marathon Training Miles: 63 miles
Summary: 3 runs, 1 spinning classes, 2 strength training workouts, 3 core workouts, 1 OCR race
Grade This Week β B
I gave myself a B this week because I missed one of my runs this week – but I’m not made about it. I still got in my long run, a good mid-distance run and 2 miles during my OTF class. Granted I could have tried to map out a route to run near my friend’s house in Philly on Saturday, but to be honest, I didn’t want to. I have 3 good friends from college and while we all talk everyday, we only get to see each other once a year (we all live in different states). Because of this, I would rather spend as much quality time with them as possible when I see them. Also we were up pretty late on Thursday and Friday night and a good amount of food and booze was involved, so working out on Saturday would have been pretty comical, lol.
I haven’t done an OCR race in many years. It was kinda fun, but if I did it again, I would do it with at least one other person that I know. For some of the obstacles I needed a partner to give me a little boost, especially for doing the wall climbs. There weren’t many people like me that did the race as an individual – there were a lot of teams. The teams were pretty much just focused on helping anyone on their team, so unfortunately I couldn’t ask anyone for help. Luckily this only happened for 3-4 obstacles. The penalty for not doing the obstacle was 10 jump squats so I just did that when needed. Some of the other obstacles included sandbag and waterjug carry up an incline, cinderblock carry, kettle bell swings, rope climb, etc. Definitely a good thing to try if you want to challenge yourself!
That’s it! I hope you had a great week π
Iβm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.
In Case You Missed It
Tuesday Topics: My Running Playlist
You are such a star to knockout your long run on a Monday! Gotta do what you’ve gotta do, right? My legs would be total toast after that! The City Challenge sounds fun but hard. Especially in the heat!
Exactly! It wasn’t ideal, but I was happy that it was 12 miles and not 20, lol.
Nicely done on the nearly back to back long runs. This coming week is the first time I’ll need to move mine and curious how that goes.
I’m with you on friends > runs. Hope you had a great time celebrating them. Well done on the OCR
Thanks Cari! I’m definitely not a fan of the back to back long runs, hopefully I won’t have to do that again during training, lol.
the things our busy worlds make us do!
I think it’s amazing that you were able to do your long run on Monday – and on a treadmill!
Sounds like you had a great time with your friends! I would have opted for that time instead of another run too!
Congrats on your obstacle race π
Thanks Michelle – A weekend with friends was good for my soul!
you are crushing your workouts lately! I see you are also sticking with the Peloton core program. I really like it and I just remembered that I need to do it for today! Congrats on your obstacle course!
Yup, sticking with that core program for sure! This is the first time I’ve done consistent core work for more than a week, lol.
OMG, 12 miles on a treadmill after work on a Monday?? That’s amazing dedication! I think you made the right call on not worrying about running when you were in Philly with your friends. I’m impressed that you did the OCR by yourself. I don’t really like them much anyway, and I definitely wouldn’t be able to do climbs without a boost!
Thanks Coco – it was definitely a harder run but it did feel good to get it out of the way. I’m not sure if I’ll do another OCR race – some of the obstacles were very odd!
I hope you’re doing a recap on the OCR! I’m eager to hear more! I’ve only done such event, and it was a few years ago at the camp where my hubby did some of his reserve work for the Iowa Guard. As you could imagine, it was set up to mimic an actual combat/war setting…with smoke bombs and the sounds of helicopters overhead. I felt like Forest Gump LOL Great job on that 12-miler!!
I’m not sure if I’ll do a recap on the blog but we can always talk about it offline π I wouldn’t say it was “fun” bit it was definitely different.
12 miles on a treadmill AND an OCR? Crikey! Kudos to you!!
Thanks so much Liz!
You did pretty good this week! One missed run isn’t going to hurt. I am OK with missing a run. Life still goes on. π
Wait, you and some of your college friends talk every day? Wow! It has been months since I’ve seen or talk to a few of my college friends.
Kudos for doing that OCR! I don’t have the guts to do one.
Thanks! Yeah, we have a group chat and we check in with each other daily. It’s a nice way to stay connected since we all live in different states.
Beautiful pyramid in that OTF class though!!
Thank you!
A+ from me – back to back 12ers. Wow.
I’m just taking it slowly trying to fit it all in.
That’s the best approach – marathon training is all about the slow build up.
That obstacle race sounds fun! Were there any water obstacles where you could cool off?
I don’t know how I’d grade myself this week–I was active but it wasn’t the normal stuff I do!
Nope, no water obstacles unfortunately! The saving grace was that it wasn’t humid, so that’s something!
The back to back long runs sounds rough, but friends definitely take priority!
Definitely! I was so happy to see them.
The long run on a “dreadmill” is an experience that I made only one time while training for the marathon. The reason was the same; a terrible rain storm.
Congrats on your obstacle race.
You are working hard!
So crazy how the extreme weather can really determine our workouts.
I have zero desire to do OCR but you go girl! I’d say even with the missed run you fit in plenty of fitness for this week — especially a 12 miler on the treadmill on a work day! Wow!
Glad you got to have fun with your friends. That definitely trumps workouts sometimes.
I’m not sure I would do another OCR – it wasn’t exactly “fun” but it was different, that’s for sure!
Great job getting in 12 on the treadmill. Treadmill miles can feel so long. Also, way to go on the OCR race. I have only ever done one and it was so hard!
Wow, way to go getting that long run done on Monday on the treadmill! That was smart planning ahead so you could enjoy the weekend π And balance is important, so that’s great you made the most of your time with your friends.
totally, balance is key, that’s for sure.
I think you did GREAT, Kim. You were busy work and social and the training program is a guideline, not the law. You made the right decision it seems to me anyway π and well done on the obstacle run, even though you were on your own!!
Thanks so much Renee!
My legs are quivering just from reading your recap of your workouts – you did a great job! And absolutely – spending time with friends is way more important than a couple more miles. It sounds like you had a great time in Philly!
Thanks Janelle! I’m hoping to get down to Philly again in the Fall. If I do, I’ll let you know!
Definitely a busy week! Way to go on the treadmill long run. Seriously, I don’t know how you got it done! I can see how your legs were tired by Wednesday lol. You are still getting those miles in and killing it so I don’t see anything wrong with everything you did. Even taking the rest day after spending time with your girlfriends!
Thanks! Honestly the treadmill doesn’t bother me that much. Granted I don’t want to log double digit runs on it, but as long as I have good music and cover up the screen showing the time, I’m good!
Wow, nice job on the Monday long run on the treadmill!! I typically do my long runs during the week because my weekends get so crazy with the kids.
Thanks so much Angela!
I’m so sorry you were left hanging on some of the obstacles on your OCR! I’ve always heard such positive things about the community and how willing to assist everyone is so it’s disappointing you didn’t have that same experience.
Despite your B, it seems like you did a great job! You’re always so dedicated and consistent.
Thanks so much Jenn! It kinda sucked to be left hanging but I just tried to focus on the obstacles that I could complete π
You are doing so well with your training for Chicago! I am trying to be more disciplined but life keeps getting in the way! I have a bunch of races coming up so I am hoping they will keep me motivated.
I have no races scheduled between now and Chicago so I need to find at least one half marathon so I can use that as a long run
Wow, two long runs in 3 days! that’s intense! But makes sense so you could really focus on spending time with your friends π
Thanks Jessie! I don’t think I’ll be doing anymore back to back long runs during this training, but it was a good sacrifice to spend more time with my friends!
