Happy Sunday! I hope that everyone had a great week. This week I really tried to focus on getting enough sleep since I was starting to feel a little bit of “training fatigue”. I think it worked as my workouts felt better this week and my body finally felt back to normal by Thursday.
Here’s how week 5 of marathon training went for me this week:
Monday, August 5
OrangeTheory Fitness (Strength) – 60 minutes
Fun power workout at OTF! I really enjoyed floor block because it was a good mix of arms, legs and core. The run/row block was really interesting too. We had to run a 1/3 of a mile, with alternating inclines, and then row for a certain amount of meters. The row portion dropped by 50 meters each block.
Tuesday, August 6
4 mile run + strength training (30 minutes) + core work (10 minutes)
I had every intention of doing this workout in the morning before work but my body was like “nah” so I moved it to the evening. The run went well and I modified some of the moves for strength training due to a cranky tricep muscle.
I also had an appointment with my ART doctor after work. In his exact words, “Kim, you’re a mess” LOL. I filled him in on my adventures over the past two weeks, including my 2 falls. He gave me an alignment, worked on my lower back issues and confirmed that I messed up my right tricep muscle during my latest fall. He worked some magic on it (which was super painful) but it’s feeling slightly better. It’s gonna take time to heal so I just have to be careful.
Wednesday, August 7
6 mile run + core work (10 minutes).
I knew that my normal weekly boot camp class wouldn’t be happening this week so I moved Tuesday’s run to Wednesday. Had to do this run on the treadmill since we had crazy storms rolling in during the afternoon and evening. Luckily we didn’t lose power!
Thursday, August 8
OrangeTheory Fitness (Endurance, Strength, Power) – 60 minutes
Every Thursday in August is #TBT themed at my OTF studio. Today was all about the 1960s. You all know how much I love a theme! I got these groovy accessories from Amazon, and as you can see from my calorie burn, it was a hard class!
Friday, August 9
REST DAY!
Saturday, August 10
14 mile long run.
This was, dare I say, an enjoyable run. I know the great weather made a big difference, but the run went by pretty quickly, I didn’t really have any aches and pains, and I stayed upright so it was a win-win! I did the first 6 miles solo, next 6 miles with my crew, and then then the final 2 miles solo. I think I need to do my fueling a little bit earlier in the run (I took one gel at 6 miles, one at 10.5 miles). I used my trusty salted strawberry SiS gel and also tried the cherry flavored gel. The cherry was okay but salted strawberry is still my favorite!
Sunday, August 11
Spinning (60 minutes) + core work (10 minutes)
Closed out the week with two 30 minutes Peloton spinning classes with one of my favorite instructors!
Total Weekly Mileage: 27.5 miles
Marathon Training Miles: 115.1 miles
Summary: 5 runs, 1 spinning classes, 3 strength training workouts, 3 core workouts
Grade This Week – A
5 weeks down, many more to go, LOL. Overall, I’m happy with the quality of my workouts this week. Anytime I can finish a long run and not feel like roadkill is a good thing! I also really enjoyed all my other workouts this week. I am glad that I’m keeping up with doing a few core workouts a week as well.
On Saturday I received the KT Recovery+ Ice/Heat Massage Ball. I saw this at an expo last year and regretted not buying it, so when I saw it on Linda’s Running Rummage Sale I jumped at the chance to buy it. I can’t wait to try it out later on today! Definitely check out her page because she’s selling a lot of nice items and all the proceeds go to her Leukemia & Lymphoma Society fundraising page for the New York City Marathon.
Unrelated to running, I was notified by a few people about a promotion that Frontier airlines is running for people with the last name of Green or Greene. At first I was intrigued, but I’ve heard some horror stories from this airline so I didn’t really look into the promotion. Also the flight would have to be taken pretty soon so it doesn’t work with my schedule.
That’s it! I hope you had a great week 🙂
I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

Tuesday Topics: How do you incorporate fitness with your family?
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
It’s good that you’re on the real road to recovery from your falls, and can still keep up with your training! Any time 14 miles feels good you’ve done something right.
Love the TBT headbands!
Oooh, that massage ball sounds amazing . . .
kookyrunner says
Thanks Judy! I needed a good week after dealing with so much soreness and falls the week before
The massage ball is really awesome!
Shathiso says
I’ve started taking my gels earlier on my long run and it really makes a difference! I loved themed events and when other people make an effort to dress up too! You guys rocked that 1960s look!
kookyrunner says
I’m going to try to take my gels every 4 miles on my next long run and see how that makes me feel. I think it’s going to give me more energy, which is always needed!
Marcia says
Wait: 2 falls?? How’d I miss that?? I’m so glad you went in for some ART! I love seeing the OTF themes. So fun! That ice/heat ball sounds perfect for you right now!
kookyrunner says
LOL yup! I fell during my OCR race 2 weeks ago and then I fell at the end of my long run last Saturday. Thank goodness neither fall caused a serious injury!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
So glad the ART doc helped! And yay for feeling good after 14 – I was somewhere between roadkill and ok LOL! And good on you for prioritizing sleep this week – I need to follow your lead.
kookyrunner says
My ART doc is a rockstar. I always feel so much better after going to him. I am a horrible sleeper but I’ve been getting in bed between 9-10pm every night. Even if I’m not asleep, at least I am relaxing, which is good!
Coco says
I’m still in awe of your enjoyable 14 mile run. I’m still suffering through 5 miles. I love how much fun you had with that 60s theme — too cute!
kookyrunner says
Those feel good long runs are so rare!
Kimberly Hatting says
You had such a solid week! I love the groovy pick of you and Mom 😉 I think a slew of us all were in sync with our great Saturday long runs #letsrock26point2!
kookyrunner says
Yes! Also the cooler temps on Saturday felt like such a gift compared to the crazy humidity and storms we had here all week.
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
After having my own personal horror story with Spirit, I will never again fly a cheap airline. I’d rather pay more and get better service and a more reliable flight.
I’d love to get back to OTF. I really miss strength training in some way shape or form, but I’m horrible at doing it on my own. I just have no motivation when I’m not in a group setting.
kookyrunner says
Totally agree with you! I’ve heard too many horror stories about Spirit and Frontier. I’m staying far away, lol
angela @ happy fit mama says
It’s always a good run when you stay upright! Lol! I can’t imagine getting treatment on your tricep. That must have been painful! Also, that pick of you and your mom is fantastic!
kookyrunner says
The ART on my tricep was SO painful but at least it really helped!
Jessie says
What an odd promotion- huh…
Awesome week of training- 14 miles already! Training is flying by 🙂
kookyrunner says
Thanks Jessie!
Denise @runheartfit says
Salted strawberry sounds pretty good. I’ll have to check that one out.
It’s great that you have a crew to help you with those long runs! Great job Kim!
kookyrunner says
It’s a really good flavor and not overly sweet.
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
Fantastic job on your 18 miler this week! So glad that it went well for you. Funny, I also have that roller ball thing I bought at RnR Chicago. Kind of forgot about it so now I will grab it out this week. I need to take a little bit better care of myself this week re post run .Have a great week ahead!
kookyrunner says
I tried the roller ball last night and it was heavenly!
Cari says
Yikes on your recent falls. I clearly missed a Weekly Wrap post, although I thought I’d read all (sorry, I declared amnesty and skipped Tuesdays). Glad you’re on the mend and yesterday felt better. I want to clone that weather.
Salted berry is one I like too, as well as orange. Haven’t seen the cherry one yet. Fueling for me has been a little all over the place – my only constant is the breakfast bar before.
Cari says
also, good call on Frontier.
kookyrunner says
lol no worries! I haven’t tried the orange flavor, I’ll need to test that out.
Hannah says
It’s great when everything comes together for a long run like that! I’ve lived a Frontier horror story, lol, so good call on not doing that.
kookyrunner says
Oh no! Sorry to hear that you have a Frontier horror story but it just reassures me that I made the right call not looking into the promotion lol
The Accidental Marathoner says
You are so disciplined about your training and I am loving your weekly updates. I’m still a work in progress! I also liked the SiS salted strawberry flavor best. I am now using Gatorade Endurance for my Chicago/NYC training as they will be what is offered on the course. I was sent multiple flavors and cannot weight to try the watermelon!
I hope you enjoy the massage ice/heat massage ball and I sincerely appreciate the mention!
That is so bizarre about the Frontier Airlines discount for your last name! I stay away from the budget airlines. I feel like they nickel and dime so much, in the end you pay the same as the bigger names do.
kookyrunner says
I look forward to hearing what you think about the Gatorade Endurance products!
Laurie says
Oh no! “You’re a mess” is NOT what you want to hear from your ART doctor. Hope you are feeling better soon. Love your 1960s fitness attire!
kookyrunner says
LOL he’s also a runner and has a good sense of humor so I know he was slightly joking 🙂
Chaitali says
Great job on the week! Glad the ART doctor was able to help out. I hadn’t heard of that massage ball before but it sounds amazing. I look forward to hearing what you think of it 🙂
kookyrunner says
I really think the ART helped me have a great productive week!
Laetitia says
So the promotion is real? I thought it might be a scam for a bit… I’d be dubious as well (though I’ve flown frontier when I had no other options…)
kookyrunner says
Yup, it seems to be real but what I also don’t like is that you have to pay for the ticket upfront and then they reimburse you. We all know they will take forever to do that, lol
Wendy says
I”m so glad you had a good week of training. You deserve it! I had to miss my massage last weekend ‘had to’ because we drove up to the lake to go waterskiing. Now I’m a mess! LOL! After I catch up on blogs, I’m pulling out the yoga mat for a stretch…
Have a great week!
kookyrunner says
I think I need to hit my mat for some intense stretching this week too!
Jenn says
I love you Saturday shirt! And I love your 60s theme for OTF. How great!
So today, i really struggled in 9Round. We used an ab wheel on saturday and when I tried to do assisted sit ups today… let’s just say my body was not cooperating. Ouch! All in the name of getting stronger, right?
kookyrunner says
Oh that ab wheel/ab dolly is no joke! My abs stay sore for a few days after really using that thing, lol.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
The weather was so much better this weekend! I’m glad you had a good long run. No more falling down!!
kookyrunner says
Haha yes no falling, thanks Lisa!
Zenaida Arroyo says
Another awesome week for you! 5 weeks already? I am excited to see you in October.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Zenaida!
Renée says
good week and GREAT that you got a bit fixed up by your ART doctor. If you want unsolicited advice (hahaha!) about the gels, i *think* SiS recommends every 20 minutes which is like uh NO… so I always used them about every 40. 6 miles is just under 10K so I think you do want to take a gel around maybe 4 or 4.5 miles? Anyway, try it (or don’t – I know you didn’t ask, but thought it could be helpful 🙂 ).
so how did you get more sleep??? because I am dying for more sleep!
kookyrunner says
Thanks for the recommendation on the gels! On Saturday I have 16 miles so I’m going to try to take them every 4 miles which is roughly every 45 minutes. I’ll see if I feel the difference. I agree – 20 mins is way too often!
Getting more sleep this week and last week has been easier because I’m so exhausted by the end of the day. Also OTF is absolutely kicking my butt!
Dominique Cheylise says
This sounds like such a balanced week of workouts! Lots core strength 🙂 Have you tried CrossFit? If you have, how does it compare to Orangetheory?
kookyrunner says
I’ve tried Crossfit, but only took a few classes. I prefer OTF because the moves aren’t as crazy and the coaches really take the time to go over form.
