Happy Sunday! I hope that everyone had a great week π Another week of marathon training done. I’m definitely at the point now where I’m looking forward to my cutback week which I believe will happen during week 8. These long runs are taking a lot outta me!
Here’s how week 6 of marathon training went for me this week:
Monday, August 12
OrangeTheory Fitness – Power (60 minutes).
This was one of the harder Power workouts I’ve done at OTF. We did a ton of switches from the treadmill to the floor (weights) so it was hard to catch my breath but I was very thankful for any walking recovery we got on the treadmill, lol.
Tuesday, August 13
3 mile run + spinning (30 minutes) + core work (10 minutes).
I’ll admit, I did hit snooze once or twice, but I did eventually get up and get in my workout. I had planned to do my mid-distance weekly run but my legs just weren’t having it so I opted for a “brick” workout instead.
Wednesday, August 14
OrangeThreory Fitness – Inferno (60 minutes).
Yup, this class was just as hard as it sounded, but it was also fun if that makes sense?
I also signed up to volunteer for the New York City Marathon. I’ll be handing out the race shirts at the expo that Friday (11/1) from 9:00am – 2:00pm. If you’re running NYCM and planning on going to the Expo that day, stop by and say Hi! This will be my 4th time volunteering for NYCM in some way (handed out water at mile 18, handed out gels at mile 18, gave out bibs at the expo, and this year I’ll be giving out the race shirts). I don’t live that far from NYC so I love to volunteer for NYCM – the city is AMAZING that weekend! Oh, and since my company gives each employee paid time off to volunteer, I don’t have to use a vacation day and I’m still getting paid – SCORE!
Thursday, August 15
7 mile run + core work (10 minutes).
Nice mid-distance run on Friday Eve π
Friday, August 16
REST DAY! This was also my last day of work for a week as I’m on vacation next week, well really a staycation!
Saturday, August 17
16 mile run.
Well hello there oppressive dew point, we meet again. The dew point was 72 when I left my house so I knew it was going to a rough run.
I did the first 5.5 miles solo and they sucked HARD. At mile 3 I was ready for the run to be done but I still had 13 miles to go so I just kept putting one foot in front of the other. I ran with my run crew for the next 4 miles. Surprisingly those felt a little better. One of my run buddies joined me for the rest of my run. I had some lower back pain in the last few miles and my legs started to feel heavy so it was nice to have company on those last few miles. Let me tell you – I was ecstatic once my watch hit 16 miles.
The humidity was something fierce. I think I jumped in the shower within 5 minutes of getting back home – I was so gross and sweaty. I could actually wring out all the sweat in my clothes – yuck!
Sunday, August 18
Spinning (60 minutes) + core work (25 minutes).
Similar to last week, I took two 30 minute Peloton cycle classes with my favorite instructor, Cody. Then I got in two core classes for a total of 25 minutes.
Total Weekly Mileage: 30.1 miles
Marathon Training Miles: 145.2 miles
Summary: 5 runs, 3 spinning classes, 2 strength training workouts, 3 core workouts
Grade This Week β A
Woohoo! I hit my first 30 mile week of this training cycle. This week felt really long, probably because I’m off work next week. Doesn’t it always seem like there’s a million things to do right before you take vacation?
I had some weird ankle issues earlier this week. I noticed on Wednesday that my left ankle was sore and swollen. I was still able to do all of my workouts, so it’s not affecting me too much, but I notice that after a run it does feel a little stiff. It’s also stiff when I first wake up in the morning too. I’ve been icing it and using KT tape for when I run which seems to help. I’ll keep monitoring it but I don’t think it’s anything too serious (fingers crossed).
That’s it! I hope you had a great week π
Iβm linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

That’s a hard week! Really well done on the 16 miler and great you had your buddies with you for a lot of it- I prefer to get my lone miles done first, too.
Hooray for volunteering, too. The two people I know doing NY are Cari from the linkup and my lovely friend Grace from running club (one of the ladies who did lots of miles of my DIY marathon with me). I will see if I can direct her towards you!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Liz! I’m the only one from my run crew that is training for a marathon so I do most of my runs solo. It was great to have company yesterday though.
Yes so far I know of Cari and Darlene (also from the link up) that are doing NYCM. I really hope they are able to stop by that Friday!
melissa says
Way to go on that long run!! i love getting in long runs with friends, it makes the miles fly by sometimes. I was just in Chicago for a girls weekend and it was so much fun – we even got in one run!
kookyrunner says
It does make the miles go by quickly, which is just what I needed yesterday!
Black Knight says
A very good job on the long run. Glad you didn’t run alone, with other runners the workout is easier and time flies.
For many reasons I run alone but when I am with friends I run faster and I feel less the fatigue.
kookyrunner says
Thanks! You’re right, I do tend to run faster with friends than when I’m running solo.
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
What a strong week for you! Congrats on getting in that 16 miler w this heat. That must give you lots of confidence. Very inspiring Kim! Thanks for linking up
kookyrunner says
Thanks Deborah! I was proud of myself for not bailing on the run because I really seriously thought of bailing early.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I am impressed that you did Peloton today after 16 miles yesterday! Yesterday was downright ugly. Good job on all your runs this week!
Sweet that you get paid to volunteer at NYCM! How I wish NYC was a whole lot closer to us. π
kookyrunner says
For some reason my legs don’t love recovery runs but they love recovery rides on the spin bike, go figure!
That’s one perk that I really love about my job. We get 16 hours a year paid time off to volunteer. I usually use one day for NYCM and another day at the soup kitchen. It’s super rewarding.
Kimberly Hatting says
Very solid week, Kim!!! Hope the ankle is just having a small attitude thing and it’s nothing to worry about. I ran out of KT Tape…I usually tape my arches for long runs, but went without yesterday. Fortunately, all went well and I promptly bought some more tape yesterday afternoon. It wasn’t quite as warm here, but it was humid. I didn’t feel hot or uncomfortable for any of my 14 miles, but I was a dripping (literally) mess when I finished.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Kim! Yeah, I think my ankle was just being rude, hopefully it will be a thing of the past by next week.
Wendy says
Great week of training, Kim! I’m considering volunteering at Chicago as a medical volunteer. I haven’t committed yet, tho.
kookyrunner says
That would be so cool if you are able to be a medical volunteer for Chicago! If you are, hopefully I won’t see you on the course lol.
Cari says
That alarm off… graphic is awesome. I wish I could sleep in my running clothes, then I’d be all over that. The emojification of humidity. LOL
I was melting in a a cotton tee today at the Yankee game. Yesterday didn’t turn awful until post-run here
So awesome that your company gives you paid volunteer time. I need to pitch that. We do participate in an industry give back, but no free choice
Enjoy your stayvation
kookyrunner says
I’ve actually thought of sleeping in my running clothes but then I thought “is that taking it too far?” LOL.
I really need the humidity to die down this week. I know we’re still in August, but I was majorly spoiled with the great weather last weekend.
Cari says
Yep, I was saying to a friend on Friday that July was awful but August really hadn’t been too bad. We just had massive storms roll through – hope you also got some relief
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
My long run was so sweaty on Saturday! I tossed my tank top to my husband mid run and I’m pretty sure it splashed him! π That’s so fun that you are volunteering at NYC marathon! Great workouts this week. Enjoy the downtime (or maybe lots of crazy stuff and busy time?) on the staycation!!
kookyrunner says
Saturday was just so gross! I’m praying for a break in the humidity this weekend.
Day 1 of my staycation is going well so far, lol. I’m looking forward to some morning workouts and doing some deep cleaning/organizing.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Great week Kim! Huge congrats for getting through 16 in those swampy conditions.
Sweet volunteer assignment for NYC!
Odd about your ankle – hopefully it’s nothing to worry about.
Enjoy your staycation! I have a couple of days this week and next week and can not wait!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle! I’m looking forward to volunteering at the NYCM Expo again – always a good time π
I’m on day 1 of my staycation and loving it!
angela @ happy fit mama says
What a solid week! Congrats on your 16 miler! Thank goodness for running crews to help us power through. My runs yesterday in a relay were so hot and humid. My clothes were drenched. Now imagine how lovely the smell was when I opened the ziploc bags today to wash them? Gag! π
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Angela! I was so thankful for my running crew on Saturday. If not for them I probably would have bailed on the run early.
Zenaida Arroyo says
What a great week for you! I have to check out Cody’s classes. I am thinking of going to NY for the weekend to spectate the marathon. My nephew lives in Brooklyn and I know he’ll want to spectate with me.
kookyrunner says
Oh that would be fun! My mom and I usually spectate the marathon too (around mile 18).
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Great job this week! Those Orange Theory workouts sound tough, especially while marathon training! How gross was the weather for running this weekend?? I was also just soaked with sweat when I got home on Saturday. Enjoy your staycation!
kookyrunner says
The OTF workouts are definitely out of my comfort zone but I’m hoping they will make me stronger and pay off for race day. I’m so over the humidity this summer. I don’t think we had a super hot summer but between all the rain and humidity, it’s just been so gross.
Laurie says
Way to go on your long run! 16 miles is great. I am not there yet. Traveling to CO and OR to visit my kids kind of derailed my marathon training plans. I am stuck at 14, and need to up my game. Maybe this week!
kookyrunner says
14 is really good! I say anything over 13 is when training starts getting real, lol.
Hannah says
Whew, congrats on finishing your long run in that nasty weather! That’s great that your company gives you time off to volunteer.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Hannah! Yes, it’s definitely a great perk of my job and I take advantage of it every year!
Allie says
The humidity is NO JOKE and I feel for you having to run 16 miles in it but you DID IT!!! Nice work. It always helps when you can meet up with friends. The time goes by faster when you share the suffering π I hope your ankle issues are resolved before your next long run! Marathon training is so exciting but hard during the summer. Just wait a few weeks and you’ll be wearing sleeves and feel like you’re flying!
kookyrunner says
I’m convinced that if my friends weren’t there, I would have bailed on the run early. It was such a struggle fest!
Marcia says
The shizz is getting real here and I’m so excited for your redemption run in Chicago! Those treadmill to weights workouts are no joke. All the props to you for banging out 16 in those swampy conditions! I’m going to be at the Now Foods booth Friday morning until 2:30 at the Chi expo. I hope you can stop by! Hooray for volunteering again at NYCM!
kookyrunner says
Yes I will be there! I’m flying in Friday morning so if all goes well I’m going to drop my suitcase off at the hotel and then head to the Expo to be there when it opens. I just hope it’s not a mad house like 2 years ago!
Laetitia says
Congrats on that 16 mile run! I did 4 on sunday and it was sooooo gross indeed!
kookyrunner says
The humidity was so oppressive this weekend! Today is just as bad but let’s keep our fingers crossed for some relief this weekend π
Chaitali says
Wow, way to go this week and especially on that long run! We had a dew point of 72 this weekend and I could barely make it to 8 miles. Doing 16 in that weather is impressive. And how cool that your company gives you time for volunteering!
kookyrunner says
I am just so over the humidity this summer! I don’t feel like it’s been super hot but the humidity is a nightmare.
Coco says
What a solid week. Glad you found some company for part of your long run. That really makes a big difference. So, what was the Inferno workout? I was tempted to go but with conference calls at 4 and 6 pm I couldnβt swing it.
kookyrunner says
The Inferno workout was a crazy treadmill/row block – I was so out of breath by the end of it, lol.
RenΓ©e says
great week Kim! I honestly have no idea how you made it through the thickness of that humidity on your long run! major kudos to you!!! you are really rocking OTF workouts too!
my friends Vincent and Cas (maybe you’ve seen me mention Vincent in any case, Cas I’ve also run with for a while and he owns a coffee place up the road from me), are doing NYC I’m going to mention that you will be there and I am more the sure that Vincent will come and say hello! He’s nervous about going back to New York (hasn’t been for like 2 decades) and he gets nervous thinking about speaking English but I’ll prep him a bit. He’s such a good guy and I’m sure he’d love to get his shirt from one of my friends π
kookyrunner says
Thanks Renee. I think I’ve already mentally blocked out Saturday’s long run because that was ROUGH.
Yes, please tell Vincent to stop by and say Hi! I know that there will also be a ton of volunteers acting as translators so if he needs any help I can flag one of them down for him π
Jenn says
Love love love that you are volunteering! I really think i would like to run NYCM one of these days.
Inferno workout sounds intimidating! Yikes!
Great job on your miles! You are getting it done!
kookyrunner says
I hope that you will enter the lottery for NYCM – it really is a race like no other!
De Bolton says
You always inspire to do more. inferno what the what? I dont think I’m ready.
Hope you enjoy your staycation. And great job this week.
kookyrunner says
LoL you could do OTF – you’re a badass girl!
Thanks – so far I’m enjoying my staycation π
Esther says
Nice work lady! Running in humidity is no fun! I have vivid memories of my long runs in the Texas heat and humidity and all the sweat!!
Volunteering for the NYCM sounds so fun!
Hope you enjoy your staycation and your ankle feels better too!
kookyrunner says
Oof! I am not envious of long runs in the Texas heat. I know that had to be harsh!
Angela says
Wonderful job Kim on the 16 miler! You are going to do great at the Chicago Marathon!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Angela!
Denise @ runheartfit says
What a week! Great job! It sure helps to have friends to run with.
My work supplied the medical support for the Disneyland Half and Tinkerbell Half for a few years and I volunteered. We saw some pretty funny stuff…one guy applied Vaseline to his legs thinking it was Biofreeze. LOL. I figured he would just slide if he fell.
kookyrunner says
Oh no, that poor guy, LOL. You would think he would realize it wasn’t Biofreeze pretty quickly but maybe he was just in the zone, lol.
Kaila says
So many awesome and varied workouts! Looks like your training is really coming along. I hope to see you at Chicago someday!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Kaila!
