Happy Sunday! Whew – what a week. This was the first week in a while that I didn’t take a rest day. This was primarily because I wanted to try a few different Orangetheory instructors to see how I like their style of teaching, etc. Because of the OTF classes, running, spinning and my regular boot camp class, I felt like my body was in a state of DOMS (delayed onset muscles soreness) all week.
I would wake up and my upper body would feel fine, but then my legs would feel trashed and vice versa. I’ll definitely take a rest day next week to give my body a break. Here’s how my workouts went this week:
Monday, June 17
Spinning (60 minutes).
I haven’t been on the Peloton bike a lot recently (that needs to change) so I enjoyed two 30 minute classes. I also discovered that I can use my OTF heart rate monitor for other activities as the app has an ‘out of studio’ workout feature. It was nice to see that my spinning workout burned a good amount of calories!
Tuesday, June 18
Orangetheory Fitness – Power day (60 minutes).
I wasn’t sure if I could get through this class because I was pretty wiped after work, but I got a nice burst of energy as soon as I got to the studio.
Wednesday, June 19
Boot Camp (60 minutes).
Probably shouldn’t have done this class, but I really do enjoy it.
Thursday, June 20
5 miles.
5 treadmill miles because I wasn’t sure I would be able to beat an impending thunderstorm. Did I mention that it rained most of the week..AGAIN! I feel like it’s been raining since April.
Friday, June 21
Orangetheory Fitness – strength day (60 minutes).
Fridays are usually my rest days but I wanted to try out an Orangetheory class with this instructor and I absolutely loved it. His teaching style was easy to follow and he comes around to check your form, especially when we’re doing any movements with weights.
Saturday, June 22
6 mile run.
This run was brutal. My legs just weren’t have it from the beginning. I wanted to get in more miles but decided to listen to my body. Luckily I had the salted strawberry SiS gel to give me some energy and it tasted really good!
Sunday, June 23
Orangethreory Fitness (ESP – Endurance, Strength and Power) day (60 minutes)
OMG. Let’s just say that I’m glad OTF doesn’t let you know the type of class you have until the day of the class. If I knew this in advance, I may have skipped it, lol. It was hard!
Total Weekly Mileage: 16.3 miles
Summary: 5 runs, 2 spinning classes, 4 strength training workouts
Grade This Week – A
This was a crazy week. Although I wish my mileage was a bit higher, it was still a great week of workouts. I also love that I get in some running during all of my OTF classes – that’s a bonus for sure! One would think that I would have slept well this week thanks to the workouts but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. I woke up at 4am (for no reason) 3 days this week – ugh! Each time I couldn’t go back to sleep and that was super annoying. I’m hoping next week is better.
As you can tell, I’m loving the Orangetheory Fitness classes so far! For my monthly membership I get 8 classes per month. I was thinking of upgrading to the unlimited membership, but I don’t know if I will have time to go more than twice a week, especially with marathon training starting soon. I’ll have to give that some extra thought. In addition, I’m going to have to decide if I still need my regular gym membership. Granted my membership is pretty cheap ($20/month) so it wouldn’t be horrible to keep it, but I just hate wasting money, lol. As long as I still go to the gym twice a week I think it would be worth it.
Next week I’ll be in Nashville, TN from Tuesday-Friday for a work conference. It’s my first time visiting the city and I’m super excited. Luckily the conference has set up some fun things for us to do in the evenings like a visit to the Analog and the County Music Hall of Fame and Museum. If you have any additional recommendations for things to do or restaurants to try, please let me know!
And in a bit of random news, I saw that Instagram keeps count on how many times I like a photo with a particular hashtag. I didn’t know this was a thing? Also, so what’s so bad about liking chicken? LOL
That’s it! I hope you had a great week 🙂
I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.
In Case You Missed It
Tuesday Topics: What are your summer running plans?
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Whew! That’s a whole lot of working out! It is nice that OTF includes some treadmill running, and strength is something we runners are usually lacking anyway.
Enjoy Nashville! Never been. Although shuddering at visiting it in summer (oh the humidity).
kookyrunner says
I know! I checked the weather and it looks HOT. Granted I’ll be indoors much of the time for the conference but plan on doing some exploring at night when it’s hopefully much cooler.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Too late, but I was going to warn you that most buildings are probably very cold. They over-air condition everything in the south.
kookyrunner says
You are so right! I was very happy that I packed a cardigan.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Glad you did too. Even in the north you can still need one in the summers!
Wendy Rivard says
You did a lot last week! OTF sounds like so much fun, though. Have such a great time in Nashville! I loved it when I visited with my sister last fall.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Wendy! I am planning on eating my way through Nashville next week, LOL.
Marcia says
I love how you’ve embraced OTF but the not-sleeping thing is a red flag. As a coach I will tell you that’s likely from high cortisol, resulting from the stress of all the workouts. You’re right to be concerned about fitting marathon training in there too.
I get wired like that right after a marathon. Rightfully so.
Please work some rest in there.
I’ll take my coaching hat off now. 😛
xoxox
kookyrunner says
I always appreciate when you put on your coaching hat! Thank you for letting my know what could be causing the lack of sleep. I’m going to be going easier on classes this upcoming week so hopefully that will help!
Kimberly Hatting says
I see that Insta hashtag thing from time to time, and I ignore it. I honestly like pics because of the person or the pic itself; I don’t pay much attention to the hashtags. YOU were a busy #Kim this week! I crashed on Friday night (around 7:30) and didn’t wake up until 1:30…that’s like a full night of sleep for me LOL And Friday was pretty much a rest day for me, so it was odd my body needed that extra rest. Great job on all your workouts this week, though! I’d recommend the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. I’m not really much of a country music fan, but it’s a neat place with so much history. Thanks for linking!!
kookyrunner says
Seems like your body really wanted that rest on Friday – I’m glad you were able to fall asleep early, but boo to waking up so early on Saturday 🙁
Same here – I’m not a huge fan of country music but I feel like I need to immerse myself in the music culture while I’m visiting there. Hoping I can add the Grand Ole Opry to my sightseeing list!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
LOL on the chicken! I get some odd like notifications as well. Look at you rocking the OTF classes. Nice job jumping right in there those are not easy. Have a great week!
kookyrunner says
I’m still laughing at the notification for #chicken – just so random! I’m always liking food photos on Instagram and a guess a bunch of them had chicken lol.
Jessie says
Haha, I always laugh about those instagram notifications for me. They are almost always “you liked 5 photos about dogs this week” 🙂
You are so hard-core- what a week of workouts!
I haven’t been to Nashville but am excited to read about your trip for tips if I do!
kookyrunner says
I’ll definitely include some highlights from my Nashville trip in next week’s weekly recap! Right now I’m just excited for all the BBQ I’m going to try lol
Coco says
I’m so glad you’re liking OTF. The coaches really can make a big difference in how much you get out of it — and how safe it is. Would you use your other gym for treadmill runs in inclement weather? Otherwise I can’t see what you’d do there, since you’ll be getting strength at OTF and then your Peleton for crosstraining. That’s not to say you should cancel it — especially if you might not be able to get that deal again. Have fun in Nashville! I’ve never been.
kookyrunner says
So right about the coaches! I’ve tried 3 so far and they have all been great but I tend to gravitate toward one of them more – she’s so awesome. The issue is that she doesn’t teach any after work classes or super early morning classes so I will probably only get to take her once a week on Sundays 🙁
I have a treadmill at home so I would really only need the gym to get in my 3rd strength workout of the week (boot camp) but I could probably do that at home. Oh well, at least I can cancel the gym at any time if need be.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Wowza you had one busy week! Great to hear you’re enjoying OTF so much! Sorry about not sleeping so well – hopefully throttling back a bit on the workouts this week will help. Enjoy Nashville – that is a city I would really like to visit!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle! I think I’ll sleep better this week, hopefully (fingers crossed).
Laurie says
Wow! Your fitness routine this week was crazy (in a good way)! Way to go! I would be a puddle right now if I tried to follow your workout routine.
And I like chicken too! 🙂
kookyrunner says
Thanks Laurie! I will be toning back to workouts this week, last week was a tad bit too intense for me!
Cari says
The instagram counts are funny — my favorite is when I don’t realize a typo until it told me how many times I liked “runing”
Way to go on the workouts. I think not knowing the workout would make me crazy. Enjoy Nashville – Country HoF is on my bucket list.
I really like the nothing feels as good as finished workout meme — so much more positive than nothing tastes better than skinny feels
kookyrunner says
Haha I do that too! Sometimes even when I use hashtags for my post I need to read them twice to make sure I spelled everything right. I’m looking forward to all the yummy food in Nashville, and sight seeing as well, lol.
Those words are actually on a wall at the OTF studio I go to – I agree with you, I love that phrase much better than the “nothing tastes better than skinny feels” – ugh!
Cari says
Yep — pizza and sushi absolutely taste as good.
You’ll get all the steps in Nashville. safe travels
Hannah says
Whew, that’s a busy week! I’m a fan of salty gels – might have to check out the SiS ones.
kookyrunner says
The consistency on the Sis gels are a little different, but once you get used to that they are great!
Black Knight says
A very solid week of training, congrats.
5 miles on the “dreadmill” are an heroic action! I prefer the storm, the wind, the rain but not the treadmill!!!!!!
kookyrunner says
LOL! I’ve heard the same thing about the treadmill but I actually don’t mind it.
Darlene says
Happy that you are enjoying Otf. I’ve heard great things about it.
Sorry about the DOMS. I may have them today. We’ll see.
Nashville. How fun? My job doesn’t have conferences. I used love to go to them.
kookyrunner says
I’m really look forward to flying out to Nashville tomorrow!
The Accidental Marathoner says
Wow, you’ve been doing quite a bit! You will appreciate this week’s rest day ever so much! Of the flavors I’ve tried, I like the Salted Strawberry SIS energy gel the best. I can’t wait to try them all!
kookyrunner says
I agree – the salted strawberry has been my favorite one so far as well.
Chaitali says
Wow, what a tough week! It sounds like you’ve earned a rest day 🙂 And I’ve noticed that instagram thing lately too. Just because I like photos that use the hashtag don’t mean I want to follow it. It seems like a weird function.
kookyrunner says
LOL right?! I feel like Instagram was judging me haha.
Renée says
I feel like I’m going to have DOMS from reading your blog post! Dang, Kim!!!! I’m so glad you are loving OTF though! I wish we had it here. But I’m happy with my new gym, I just have to figure out, also because of marathon training, exactly when I can go. I decided to sign up for Pilates again as well… which means the money i was spending on my training group is no longer available (I can still drop in whenever I want, but I may only do it like once a month). So I get the money thing.
I’m with you on the instagram thing too – I was like “oh really, did I like so many posts with #ilovedivacats this week?” haha!
kookyrunner says
LOL! I’m happy to say that I didn’t have any DOMS this week, thank goodness!
Right now I’m trying to get my schedule together for marathon training and I’m finding it hard to fit in everything. I’ll have to spend some time this weekend really writing stuff down.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Great workouts Kim! I hope you have some down time for fun while on your business trip this week. I’ve only been to Nashville once (for a family reunion) so we didn’t do a lot of outside of family stuff. We did visit the Gaylord and the Grand Ole Opry.
Liz Dexter says
That instagram thing is funny. I am so bad at insta. My friend Bernice posted a load of stories from our run on Sunday but by the time I looked, they’d disappeared!
Well done on all those workouts – ow indeed! But having more strength is what I’ve wished I’d had for every marathon I’ve done so far (plus this ultra) so a good plan to have.
Jenn says
That’s quite the week! This is going to be me next week. I have been so lax about running and working out while away but …. balance? Maybe? I miss 9Round like whoa.
You are doing great with your strength training!
kookyrunner says
Sometimes you need a break to rest – it’s hard to keep up with so many workouts week after week!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
wow – you went to a lot of classes! Good job! I always have to giggle when I read things like “I probably shouldn’t have done this…”. I seem to write that a lot!
My gym is only $10 a month, so I figure I should go at least once a week. So far this summer I’ve been failing!! I just don’t like taking the time away from my family, which is pretty silly because they are doing their own thing at home anyways, but still, it’s just my state of mind. I really need to get over that thought process!
kookyrunner says
LOL! I am always questioning my decisions, but they come out pretty well about 90% of the time.
Zenaida Arroyo says
I am with you on the rain (although now we finally have some warm weather) and the not sleeping well. The latter sucks more!
Great week with all of your workouts. I might have missed it but I didn’t know you had an OTF membership. I like the 8 classes per month option. I am thinking of signing up as well but then I also want the Peloton bike. I am not sure if I can make time to go to the gym for OTF.
kookyrunner says
I was considering upgrading to the unlimited OTF membership but I wouldn’t have time to fit in all the classes. If I didn’t run, I would definitely do that though.
