Happy Sunday! I hope that everyone had an amazing week π I had quite an interesting week. Although I’ve been consistently working out for a few years, I still make rookie mistakes every now and then. I made a few this week which resulted in full body DOMS for days – it was not fun!
I was a little bit overzealous when it came to my strength training and it definitely affected my workouts, resulting in only 2 runs this week. But like they say, live and learn. It was a good learning lesson and I now know what to do differently.
Here’s how my workouts went this week:
Monday, February 11
3 miles + strength training – legs (30 minutes).
This was the start of my rookie mistakes for the week. I’ve been wanting to get in more strength training during the week, so I added in some workouts after my run. I did a 10 minute body weight exercises class and then a 20 minute glutes and leg strength workout. The glutes and leg workout totally destroyed my legs, especially my inner thighs. I probably tried to do too much too soon and should have eased my way into leg workouts.
Tuesday, February 12
Powerwalk (30 minutes) and strength training – arms (30 minutes).
We got some crappy weather on Tuesday (snow, sleet and ice) so I opted for an in-home workout. I did for a power walk and an upper body strength workout – hence rookie mistake #2 for the week. My legs were SO sore so I just wanted to work arms, and again, I completely overdid it. Although I will add that I felt like a badass once I completed the workout!
Wednesday, February 13
Boot Camp (60 minutes).
At this point, my whole body hurts. I was secretly hoping that the class would focus a bit more on arms and core vs. legs since my legs were STILL sore from Monday (arms were sore too, but less sore than my legs). Alas, that didn’t happen and I went home more sore than when I started the class. I walked like a penguin for the rest of the night.
Thursday, February 14
Spinning (60 minutes).
Happy Valentine’s Day! Thursdays are usually my run days, but my legs just weren’t having it, so I opted for an hour of spinning. I took two 30 minute Peloton classes (Pop and 90s rock).
…and no Valentine’s Day is complete without my date (lol).
This was my Valentine <3[/caption]
Friday, February 15
Rest Day (thank goodness)!
Saturday, February 16
5 mile run.
When I woke up I had no desire to run, like zero desire, but I got dressed and headed out anyway. The first mile sucked but then it got better and I was able to get in 5 miles. For once it wasn’t absolutely freezing so that helped too!
Sunday, February 17
Zumba (60 minutes).
I haven’t taken a Zumba class in a really long time so I wasn’t sure what to expect. One of the women in my Black Girls Run! group is a Zumba instructor and invited us to take her class – it was amazing! It was more of a Zumba/Boot Camp hybrid – so much fun and so much sweat.
Total Weekly Mileage: 8 miles
Summary: 2 runs, 2 spinning classes, 2 strength training workouts, 1 Powerwalk, 1 Bootcamp and 1 Zumba class
Grade This Week β B+
After feeling ‘off’ last week I was happy that my energy levels were way better this week. Throughout the week I made sure to take may vitamins, supplements and to drink plenty of water so I think that helped. Going back to basics will always do the trick!
Today’s Zumba class reminded me how much I used to love Zumba. Fun fact – When I first started working out, I was in love with Zumba. I did it 3-4 times a week. Not only was it fun but it helped me lose weight and tone my body. As I got more into running, spinning and strength training, I stopped doing Zumba (also all the good instructors left my gym). Now I’m thinking that maybe I should give it some more thought. I probably can’t do it every week, but maybe a few times a month.
I do have a small rant for this week. I’m not sure if there was something in the air yesterday but none of the other runners I passed said hello or even gave a hand wave or head nod. Same thing for people who were walking their dogs. I’ll just never understand not acknowledging people as you pass them – it’s so rude. Also, what does it costs you to just be a kind person? Okay, end rant.
That’s it for this week!
Did you have a good week? Do you still make rookie mistakes when it comes to working out?
Iβm linking up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.

Tuesday Topics: What I Love About Running
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
Looking good in the bib rave tank! I “love” that pizza sounds like the perfect date to me. Figuring out how to balance strength training and running is something I still struggle with some weeks
kookyrunner says
Thanks – I think orange may be my new color π The pizza was amazing and I enjoyed the leftovers the next day haha.
Kimberly Hatting says
I agree with your observation on kindness. Really, it’s free to give, but is priceless for the recipient(s). Sorry you had so much DOMS happening…but, as you know, we’ve all been there LOL (and none of us are newbies, either LOL)
kookyrunner says
Somehow I knew you would agree with me π Kindness is free so we should really show it in abundance!
Marcia says
I definitely still have weeks where I’m super sore for days. It’s been so dang cold here I barely see anyone out when I run lately. But yeah I always ALWAYS wave or nod.
kookyrunner says
Me too – I would feel bad if I didn’t acknowledge someone while out on a run!
Coco says
I guess you went form one extreme to another with workout weeks, but you pushed through pretty well this week. The <3 pizza is great! I am always way of doing a strength workout the day before Orange Theory because I never know what the focus if that strength workout will be. It's usually different, but last week it overlapped and my arms were noodles! I don't have the coordination for Zumba. I'm too busy trying to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing to get in a good workout. π
kookyrunner says
LoL yeah it definitely seems that way! I was just happy I actually wanted to workout this week, especially after dealing with the lack of motivation last week.
I’m not the best dancer and even I can do Zumba so you could totally do it!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I think we all make rookie mistakes from time to time & I donβt really think you made a mistake β itβll help in the βlong run β.
I wore new socks in my race. I have an older pair of the socks but wore the new, never worn pair. Huge blood blister. Not sure it was the socks but still . . .
That pizza looks amazing, btw.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Judy – I didn’t look at it that way but you’re right – hopefully all the strength work will just continue to make me stronger.
Sorry to hear that you got a blister this weekend – I know how annoying/painful that can be! Hopefully it heals up soon.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
So there is a lady that I see often on my morning runs in the summer. There is no one else on the trail, and I pass her – so I say Hi, or Good morning. She NEVERS even acknowledges me! I think, maybe she doesn’t hear me. So I say it loudly. My husband said she always says hi to him. What the heck? It’s now my mission to get her to respond. LOL
kookyrunner says
Ugh that’s so freaking annoying! I know it says more about the other person when they do that, but I just hate when people are rude for no reason at all!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Oh, I have the same pet peeve! Why is it so hard for people to give a little wave, nod or a quick hi?!
Glad you had a better week – despite the DOMS!
kookyrunner says
Right?! I really just don’t understand and it annoys me so much! I don’t why I let it get to me – I guess I just really hate rudeness.
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Ha, I’ve definitely overdone it with workouts before. But nothing a little rest, and foam rolling can’t help. Sometimes if it’s really bad I’ll get a massage. I love the be kind quote – kindness towards others and especially strangers is something I’ve been thinking of a lot lately.
kookyrunner says
I definitely should have tried getting a massage – I have no clue why that didn’t even cross my mind!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
I hate when people don’t acknowledge me! It happens all the time at work. I saw hi, how are you and people stare at me like I’m an alien. Just say hi back!
Anyway, I tend to overdo it when I’m strength training too. I go hard and then I can’t walk for a few days lol.
kookyrunner says
Ugh, that’s so damn rude! Luckily the people at my job are pretty friendly, but the runners in my area kinda suck.
Glad to know I’m not the only one that goes a little too hard with the strength training lol
Erica @ Erica Finds says
Nice job overcoming your mistakes! I did the same thing with too many stairs during the polar vortex. Oy. My calves.
That pizza looks amazing! I miss NY style pizza.
You should start Zumba-ing again! It’s good to have fun working out. I never do Zumba b/c TWO LEFT FEET! π
kookyrunner says
Oh I’ve done the stars thing before too. It took my calves day to recover, lol.
The pizza was amazing! While I like the Chicago deep dish pizza, I prefer NY style.
Michelle C says
I love your chicago pull over! I really wanted to get that one but the lines at the nike booth are always SO long. I wore my chicago tech t to cross fit this morning.
kookyrunner says
Oh when I went to the Expo it was a nightmare! I waited in line 45 minutes to buy all the Chicago gear. I’m hoping it’s not like that when I do the race again this Fall.
Jessie says
Love that pizza- best way to celebrate! You might possibly love pizza as much as me π
kookyrunner says
You didn’t know that pizza is it’s own food group? LoL.
If I could eat it every day I would – my love runs deep haha
Jessie says
Love that pizza- best way to celebrate! You might possibly love pizza as much as me π
Sometimes a good kick-in-the-butt week can be good, as long as there’s no injuries! But its hard to obtain that kind of soreness when we work out so frequently!
RenΓ©e says
you are so not a rookie and yet… I totally get it and have done similar things! like when I started BodyPump with way too heavy weights and couldn’t move my arms OR legs the next day? Enthusiasm makes us Badass and dumb at the same time hahaha!
I did Zumba a bit a LONG time ago too! I really loved it. But I hated the gym that I was going to and I didn’t love Zumba enough to stay there just for that…
glad the energy was up a bit and well done for getting out on your run when you had zero desire to do it!!
kookyrunner says
Ahh one of my friends here made the same mistake with BodyPump. She was sore for days, but learned her lesson!
My gym doesn’t have any more good Zumba teachers so that’s the main reason why I stopped doing it. Also the classes were getting so crowded!
Jenny Albertson says
I think everyone makes a rookie mistake now and then. But it’s never a big deal if we learn from it and move on π
kookyrunner says
Very true – I think I learned my lesson, lol!
Jenn says
Oh, please. Rookie mistakes is what I’m all about! I constantly make little whoopsies, lol.
That heart-shaped pizza looked yummy! We didn’t order one this year, and I missed it!
kookyrunner says
I love that a few pizza places i town were offering the heart shaped pizza – it’s so fun!
Chaitali says
That heart shaped pizza is so cute! And it sounds like you had some tough workouts last week. That’s great that you got back to a zumba class, sounds fun π
kookyrunner says
Zumba was a lot of fun – I actually forgot how much I used to love it!
Amy @ She Runs By Faith says
Hey we ALL make rookie mistakes from time to time, even after years of being a runner/active person! I usually make food-related rookie mistakes… like sure, I can do a tempo workout after eating a couple slices of pizza. Not! Hehe! Speaking of pizza, that heart-shaped pizza looks deliciously adorable π
kookyrunner says
Oh I’ve made the food-related mistakes too…those never end well, LOL!
RFC says
haha I make Rookie Mistakes allllll of the time, and I’ve been at this for over a decade now! I always tell my clients: “Do as I say, not as I do…” haha
kookyrunner says
LOL, i’m glad that I’m not the only one!
Cari says
I love your friend’s dog shirt in the Zumba class photo
I had the weirdest DOMS after last Wednesday’s PT
Tuesday’s weather was ridiculous. I went to a book signing but did not want to go out
kookyrunner says
Me too! She’s a huge animal lover and always has the funniest shirts, lol
Maybe your DOMS after PT came from using different muscles? I would usually be a little sore after my PT sessions back in the day.
Cari says
I think so, or using them in a more focused way. Glad I had the PT Wednesday rather than closer to the Half
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
Rookie mistakes every day. Like clockwork. lol And sometimes, my body likes to pretend that I made a mistake and make it difficult for me to walk down the stairs. *sigh* LOL
I’ve never actually taken a Zumba class but I hear they’re really fun! I think it would be a great option to add in a few times a month. I let my membership expire at the Y – since I’m not training for a really long race, I don’t need the treadmill – so if I want to give it a try, I’d have to fork over more $$. I don’t know. I like my Y but … small town … some things aren’t as well done as maybe they could be or would be in a larger city. *shrug*
kookyrunner says
Haha I’ve experienced the can’t walk down the stairs feeling before too!
