Happy Sunday! Let me start off by answering the title of this post. Yes, I know it’s summer, which means it will be hot, but I really didn’t appreciate the heatwave in the Northeast this week! Actually I think it was pretty much super hot everywhere. Thankfully we got a huge break in the heat and humidity this weekend and I truly appreciated it!
The extreme heat meant that most of my exercise was done indoors this week, but I’m totally okay with that. As long as I’m getting in some type of movement, I’m happy! Although I don’t have much to report, here’s how my week went:
Monday, July 2 – Friday July 6
“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
This was the motto for the week. I did a lot of what I like to call housewalking. It was too hot to walk outside so I did a lot of laps around the house, climbing stairs, etc. Sometimes I walked slowly on the treadmill with 5lb free weights so I could get in a good arm workout. Doing bicep curls and working my triceps while walking was also a great workout.
Saturday, July 7
4 mile walk.
It was a gorgeous day for a walk! While most of the crew ran their 4 miles I did a little power walking and had a great time. I even finished these 4 miles about 12 minutes faster than my 4 mile walk from the previous Saturday.
Sunday, July 8
Peloton Spinning Class (60 minutes).
I was a little hesitant on how my back would feel as this was my first “real” workout in 2 weeks. I took it slow and stayed in saddle for the ride and it felt okay. While I wish I could have pushed a little harder, I know it’s all about baby steps. I ended up with a good sweat and my heart rate was in the cardio zone the whole time so I’m calling that a win-win!

Grade This Week – A
Overall this was a good week! I’m still sore but I am able to bend down a little easier. I still have to be careful when I get up and down from sitting, but besides that I think recovery is going well besides two things. I’ve been having night sweats, but I read that this can be from the anesthesia. One solution is to drink more water so I’ve been focusing on that the past few days. I’ve also been having some pain in my right hand which I think might be from the IV that was inserted while I was in surgery. It’s fine during the day but at night it alternates between a numb feeling or a dull ache. I’m going to call the nurse practitioner tomorrow to get her thoughts on that as well. On the weight loss front, it looks my body got rid of all the water weight from the saline and whatever else they pumped into my body. I also got back on track with my eating so I’m back at my pre-New Orleans weight.
I don’t know when I’ll be able to get back to gym for my regular classes (boot camp, body works + abs, etc), but I’m hoping that I can start doing a run/walk this week. I have the RnR Chicago 5k/10k in 2 weeks so I’m hoping I can at least do a run/walk for both races. If I have to power walk both races it won’t be the worse thing in the world, but if it’s hot that weekend I am going to want to finish the race as quickly as possible, lol. Thankfully this was never a goal race so it’s more about having fun that whole weekend.
Did you have a good week? How did you deal with this week’s heatwave?

LOL, yes, I was going to remind you that it is summer! I hid from the heat and humidity by taking studio classes M-W. I thought it was going to be nicer Thursday but it was still pretty gross during my run. Friday I took (hot) yoga, and that’s always a sweat-fest. I think you are doing great to be so active so soon. I hope the lingering issues resolve quickly.
kookyrunner says
LOL I know I need to stop complaining about summer but I just dislike the heat so much! It’s warm again this week but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for lower humidity.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I definitely did spend a lot of time indoors this week too! It was brutal out there!
I once walked a half with a friend that was injured (RnR Vegas) — so if you can’t run, you’ll have plenty of company with the walkers.
That’s really weird about the night sweats — I haven’t heard of anesthesia causing that, but thankfully it’s been decades since I’ve had any.
kookyrunner says
I also walked RnR Vegas back in 2016 because I was injured! It was actually fun because I got to take a ton of photos and talk to people around me 🙂
The night sweats aren’t every night anymore, maybe every other night, so I think that’s a good sign. I don’t remember having this issue for my last surgery but I was about 14 years younger then so I’m wondering if that has something to do with it? Oh well, hopefully they will be gone very soon!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
I am so glad to see that you are back on the bike and that it feels good! Take it easy girl it is super hot out there.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Deborah! It didn’t feel painful so I was happy about that. I’ll probably do a few more bike workouts this week.
Wendy says
Glad you’re on the mend. Curious–how many punctures did you have from the bone marrow extraction? Was it both hips or just one? I’m sure you’ll have to baby it for a while. Hang in there, friend!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Wendy! I had 4 punctures total and its from both hips. One side definitely feels more sore than the other but I did have less stiffness when I woke up this morning so that’s a good thing! I do hope that I can get back to a run/walk this week though, maybe this weekend.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Glad your recovery is going well – great that you could get back on the bike! Keep taking it slow and listen to your body. Unfortunately, it’s heating up here again tomorrow.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle! I am happy that I can ride the bike so I’m definitely moving in the right direction. I felt less stiff this morning when I woke up so I’m hoping this may be the final week of recovery – hooray!
angela @ happy fit mama says
It is summer but dang, it’s ridiculous! Although I AM NOT complaining. I’m just discussing the weather. 🙂
kookyrunner says
Right?! The heatwave kind of came out of nowhere!
Jessie says
I’m glad you’re able to add a bit more movement in. I had no idea the recovery from a bone marrow donation was so intense. What a great learning your posts have been for me and probably so many others!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Jessie! The recovery is taking longer than I expected but I do feel like I’m getting better every day so I can’t complain!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” I love that motto and need to adopt it. It’s so hard for me slowing down so much in the last year. I knew the aging process would catch up with me, but so quickly? LOL
Can I just say how much I LOVE your shoes? So pretty and fun!!!
kookyrunner says
Between all my injuries and weight gain, I’ve gotten slower over the past 3 years. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get back to where I was about 4 years ago when I first started running seriously, but I’m okay with that. I’m just happy that I can still run no matter what the pace so that’s why I love that quote so much!
fairytales and fitness says
I was planning on doing RnR Chicago but just backed out. I would have totally done a run-walk with you!
Yes, it is hot everywhere. It was definitely less humid on Saturday which was nice. I actually got 5 miles in!
kookyrunner says
Awwe it would have been great to meet you in person and run/walk the race, but there’s always next year!
Awesome job getting in 5 miles on Saturday. The break in the humidity was much appreciated this weekend 🙂
Kimberly Hatting says
It definitely was summer last week (until late Thursday evening). I hear summer is returning this week, though. ha! It is July, after all 😉 Hope your healing continues to go well!
kookyrunner says
LOL yes summer is returning this week with 90+ temperatures but I’m hoping that the humidity won’t be as bad!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Thats a great quote! And I love that you’ve been walking around your house to get steps in- great idea! The heat was pretty extreme last week.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Lisa and congratulations on your happy news – how exciting!
Housewalking is pretty cool – you can rack up a lot of steps without realizing it, lol
HoHo Runs says
I’m completely jealous of the big break in the heatwave that everyone seemed to get over the weekend! (But me). Your recovery seems to be going well. It’s great you were able to cycle for an hour! I hope the night sweats and hand numbness go away soon. Thanks for linking!
kookyrunner says
I hope that you get a break in the heat and humidity soon – you have more than earned it!
Debbie says
I’m happy to hear you’re on the mend. I guess it’s as good a time as any for a heat wave. It would have been even more annoying if you were in the middle of a big training cycle.
kookyrunner says
That is so true Debbie! I am glad that I’m not marathon training this summer.
Darlene says
Losing weight and not running. That means that you are active.
Hope you can run soon. It must be tough. But you are handling well.
It was a hot week but a perfect weather weekend. I wimped out and cut my runs short and walked a lot.
kookyrunner says
Yes I think most of the weight I lost this week was just my body getting rid of water weight from all the medicine and stuff that was in my IV.
I’m hoping to do a run/walk this week – maybe on the weekend. I’ll see how it goes. I just don’t want to run too soon and mess up all the progress that I’ve made.
Lesley says
Sounds like everything is going well with recovery. Could the night sweats also be due to the heat? I don’t normally need my ceiling fan at night, and I’ve needed the past couple nights. I woke up overnight and was hot! The fan definitely helps.
kookyrunner says
That’s what I thought at first but even with the AC and my fan on, I was still sweating at night. Last night wasn’t that bad so maybe it’s starting to leave my system now.
Chaitali says
Sounds like a great week and recovery’s going well 🙂 I hope they have some answers about your hand though.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Chaitali! I didn’t have any hand issues last night so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it remains that way!
Jenn says
Aw, you’re doing so well! Just continue to take it easy and listen to your body and you’ll get back to your normal in no time.
Love those tie-dyed shoes! They have to be making things a little easier for you!
Still hot here, too. I don’t see that changing any time.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Jenn! I’m not the most patient person in the world so I’m working on taking my time and knowing that I’ll feel back to normal pretty soon.
Mt bright colorful sneakers do make it easier to get in a walk!
Sandra says
I love your fun sneakers! Yes, the heat this week was crazy! Glad your back is starting to feel a bit better!
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I really love bright sneakers so these are perfect for me.
The Accidental Marathoner says
It’s good to see you are moving as well as you are. How long did they say it might take you to fully recover? I still think this is such an amazing thing for you to have done! I hope you will be paid back with some amazing runs in the fall!
kookyrunner says
They said that I could probably resume normal workouts after 3 weeks so it seems like I am right on track. I am just happy that I was able to walk pretty well, drive, shower, etc within a week of the surgery. I’m so thankful for that! I also hope that I have some good runs coming in my future as I have 3 fall half marathons coming up!
Renée @runlaugheatpie says
you are welcome to come here Kim, it’s not so bad at the moment 😉
good that you got back slowly into your exercise routine! i bet it feels odd not going not you usually do, but best to take those slow steps through recovery!
kookyrunner says
I’d love to visit your part of the world!
It really feels odd not having any gym classes for 2 weeks. I’m not the most patient person but I’m trying to be in this situation!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
Glad you seem to be healing well! I think it’s so great that you donated.
I don’t blame you for wanting to stay indoors the entire time. I wish I could. But my hatred of treadmills is more than my hatred of the heat.
kookyrunner says
LOL sometimes you have to weigh which option you hate more.
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Your SHOES!!! LOVE the colors! My week was pretty good too, glad you’re recovering well from the donation 🙂
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I love bright sneakers so these are perfect.
Lindsay @ Fit & Awesome says
I love your running shoes! How do you like the Peloton spin classes?
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I really love the Peloton spinning classes. All of the instructors offer something different.
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
The “do what you can” motto is perfect for this summer heatwave. I know that we all wish that the weather were cooperating and allowing for more outdoor exercise. As long as you’re moving, which you did last week, that’s what matters most.
kookyrunner says
So true!
Marcia says
So glad to hear your recovery is going well. Yeah this summer will definitely go down as a hot one. Seems like it was just as hot in Chicago as it was in Florida. At least the humidity broke by the time we flew home.
kookyrunner says
I think last week was just a hot week across the country in general. It’s hot again this week but the humidity is lower so it doesn’t feel as bad, thank goodness!
Teresa says
Don’t worry about the RnR 5k/10k …just focus on having fun, meeting new bloggers and recovering. There’s plenty of time for hard workouts and running! xoxo
kookyrunner says
My thoughts exactly – it’s really more about the experience and meeting up with everyone! 🙂
Cari says
I love your shoes!
And I feel you on summer, this quit hit is ridiculous.
Your house walking is my museum walking some days. It’s all I can do for steps
kookyrunner says
Museum walking sounds way more fun!
AmyC says
The weather is definitely a…HOT topic, haha. Glad to see your recovery is going smoothly. I think the what you can, when you can approach is the best one!
kookyrunner says
LoL, I see what you did there 🙂 It’s hot again this week but the humidity isn’t as high so I’m thankful for that!
Katie Daughtrey says
The heat in NC has been no joke! I was so grateful for last weekend’s cool down! I’ve been beating the heat by going out for my runs by 5 AM each morning. Some days even that is miserable!
kookyrunner says
Good for you for getting in those early morning runs to beat the heat!
Amy @ Life to the Full says
I like the quote you shared and totally agree! Do what you can, that’s the name of the game. It’s hot here but I run early and it’s usually about 70°F at 5:30 am. Not too bad compared to midday! Hope you feel better this week. Even just drinking more water makes me feel so much better!
kookyrunner says
You definitely just have to do what you can, especially with the crazy heat!
Liz Dexter says
Great work and well done for getting to spin class (I love spin, must get back to it). Both times I’ve had a cannula in my hand I’ve honestly had more trouble with that than what I was having done, in terms of pain and bruising and one side numbness that persisted. I hope that gets sorted soon for you.
kookyrunner says
Oh wow I’ve never heard of a cannula but I’m going to research that now. Thanks!
Liz Dexter says
Oh it’s just the name (maybe only here?) for the needle they leave stuck in the back of your hand for a while – they put the initial anaesthetic through it and then I had my fluids through it afterwards.
