Happy Sunday! I know that most of you are dealing with crazy cold weather (I’m looking at you Chicago!) but I hope that a ‘warm front’ will come your way soon. And by warm front I mean above zero temperatures.
In other news I can’t believe that we’re nearing the end of January. It seems like 2019 is off to a fast and furious start. Overall I am glad that I’ve been able to keep up with my runs and workouts. One of my biggest goals for this year was to be consistent with my running (run 3x a week) and log a minimum of 50 miles per month (so far so good). It’s easy to fall out a routine when you’re not training for a race so I wouldn’t to try to avoid that this year.
This week was a little hectic (work has been bananas), but here’s how my workouts shaped out for the week:
Monday, January 21
5 mile run.
It was 3 degrees (with a real feel of -20) so this was a nice treadmill run.
Tuesday, January 22
Hip Hop Spinning Class (45 mins) + HIIT Cardio (10 mins).
This combo definitely had me feeling winded by the end. Nothing like a great cardio session to get the blood pumping.
Wednesday, January 23
Walking (20 mins) + Boot Camp (60 mins).
This boot camp class was SO good! The instructor mixed thins up a bit and we were able to spend more time working with weights. I felt sore but accomplished after class!
Thursday, January 24
4 mile run + Resistance Band Workout.
I love doing runs during my lunch hour. This run was okay but I felt some pain in my leg. I definitely need to remember to use my resistance bands more to help strengthen my glutes.
Friday, January 25
REST DAY but I did a 10 minute stretching class to help my hips/leg.
Saturday, January 26
5 mile run.
It felt great to get outside again for a run. I took advantage of ‘warmer’ temps (20 degrees) and no wind.
Sunday, January 27
Spinning (65 mins) + 10 min cool down walk (Peloton app).
I always enjoying closing out the week with a sweaty spinning class 🙂 I did a 10 minute cool down walk to help with my leg soreness after class.
Total Weekly Mileage: 14 miles
Summary: 3 runs, 2 spinning classes, 1 HIIT class, 1 boot camp, 2 walking classes
Grade This Week – B+
I got in a good amount of workouts this week but I still want to do more with weights. I felt so good after this week’s bootcamp class and I need to try to recreate that feeling more during the week! Also I feel like I’ve definitely lost some upper body strength and that’s never a good thing. Even if I do a quick 15 minute workout with weights after a run, that’s better than nothing!
I’ve been making an effort to get in at least 5 minutes of stretching before and after my workouts. While I don’t think that I’m more flexible just yet, I know that eventually I’ll get there. Sometimes I can’t believe how tight my hips are – it’s ridiculous! I’m hoping that by the Spring I’ll be at least a little more flexible.
That’s it for this week!
What were the highlights of your week?

I”m hoping for a little more temperate temperatures (see what I did there!) but it won’t happen until at least next weekend. Wednesday’s high is predicted to be -12. Tonight we’re getting more snow. Thank goodness I’m recovering from my race!
kookyrunner says
OMG! I cannot believe that the high temp on Wednesday will be -12. That’s just not right, lol.

is it summer yet? At least January is coming to an end…February can often be the worst though (That’s when I broke my leg!) But then March/April bring signs of hope and often great running weather. You did a great job fitting in some solid workouts despite the weather! I need to figure out a way to do a lunch time run…do you shower/wash your hair? What are your tips for getting back into work mode quickly? 🙂
kookyrunner says
I’m actually nervous for February also – that’s when it tends to get super crazy cold here, and lots of snow. Keeping my fingers crossed that it’s not too bad.
The only reason I can do lunchtime runs on Thursday is because I work from home 🙂 Luckily I don’t have to look “presentable” after my run, lol.
Kimberly Hatting says
Is it any wonder why I LOVE my summer weather so much? We’ve had a cold week, and it’s gonna continue for awhile. If all the ice would magically disappear, I could maybe at least get out for a short walk (??). It seems like all of us are playing on the treadmills more than usual LOL I’d LOVE some temps in the 20’s, especially with no wind! I’m jealous!!!
kookyrunner says
But remember with summer running comes heat and awful humidity 🙁 I still prefer winter running over summer running. In the summer I could run naked and still be a sweaty mess, but at least in the winter I can bundle up, lol
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
A very solid week — as always! It really is so hard to fit it all in. My strength training has had to take a slight backseat to the running at present, but I do feel I’ve rebulit some muscle.
A run outside with no wind is winning!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Judy! In February one of my goals will be to get in more strength training. Even if I have to fit in a quick session after a run, it will be worth it!
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
I think that I would absolutely fall apart if our temps down here had a real feel of negative anything. I’m not saying it’s never happened but it doesn’t happen that much. I’m a big cold weather wimp.
You definitely had a solid week and yeah, this week seems to have been crazy for ALL of us! What’s up with that? Was it the moon? The way the planets lined up? Or just random back luck? #thingsthatmakeyougohmmm
My hips are notoriously tight but since my knee injury, I’ve been a lot better about stretching and rolling all the things and I definitely notice a difference. It certainly wasn’t immediate, though. Keep it up!
kookyrunner says
I love Winter and cold weather, but not sub-zero weather! Luckily (knock on wood), we haven’t had that much snow yet. I’m thankful for that since I hate snow. It’s pretty when it’s coming down, but I hate dealing with the clean up!
It seems like something was definitely off in the universe this past week, lol
Coco says
You had a great week! For both of my recent injuries – PF and hip – I’ve been told to do the figure 4 stretch. You’d think I’d learn and just keep doing it (maybe now I have). I’m OK with winter but I want a bit more snow and less mud!
kookyrunner says
Ahh yes I love the figure 4 stretch! That’s the one stretch where I can really feel everything.
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
It was a lot warmer here yesterday too.The wind makes a huge difference. Looks like we are going to get hit w all that cold air this week too ugh. Stay Warm!
kookyrunner says
Totally – the wind can make a normal winter day feel downright frigid!
HoHo Runs says
It’s scary how fast January came and went. Great job in staying consistent this month! I’m trying to stretch daily too. I think I’m seeing a difference already with my hips. It’s so hard to imagine a feels like of -20. I hope you have more moderate temps this week. Thanks for linking!
kookyrunner says
Agreed! It seems like we were just ringing in the New Year last week, lol.
That’s awesome that you are already seeing a difference by doing daily stretches. I’m hoping that I’ll start to feel a difference in a few weeks.
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
20 degrees would feel balmy after the winter weather we’ve been having! So smart to prioritize stretching – are you trying for a certain area to become more flexible?
kookyrunner says
Oh man, Chicago has been getting slammed! I feel so sorry for all of you!Hopefully after this week it will get a little better.
I’m hoping that I can loosen up my hips by being consistent with my stretching.
angela @ happy fit mama says
I’ve never really thought about how cold a warlock’s wanker is…now I know! Lol! Nice week of workouts lady!
kookyrunner says
LOL I use a weather app called What the Forecast and it always gives funny phrases like that!
Marcia says
You’re doing great on consistency! Despite this warlock wanker weather hahaha! Schools here are already closed for tomorrow. Bracing for another winter storm as per usual
kookyrunner says
Thanks Marcia! The warlock wanker phrase makes me LOL everytime. I really love that What the Forecast weather app!
Stay safe this week!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Another solid week! I think it’s a great idea to try to get a quick weights workout in after a run. My strength training serious took a hit this month – it’ s so hard trying to fit everything in, isn’t it?!
kookyrunner says
Agreed! Sometimes I really struggle with the balance between cardio and strength, especially since I have to get in my runs and I really like spinning too.
Debbie says
I’m a little in awe of all the runners I know who get out there when it’s so cold! I’m pretty sure I’d be huddling under my blanket if it was 20 degrees outside (let alone 3!). Nice job on your week.
kookyrunner says
LOL, I think it’s all relative. I’m sure you run in 90 degrees+ weather and I can’t deal with that type of heat!
Darlene says
It’s so great to be able to run outdoors.
We have a lot of snow and ice and it’s a challenge to find a place to run.
Very anxious for spring. it will be awhile since we have another snowstorm on the way.
kookyrunner says
The ice is such a challenge, and so dangerous!
Chaitali says
Sounds like a great week in spite of the weather! That’s a great idea to get in that extra stretching before and after runs. I need to get better about that too.
kookyrunner says
Luckily the weather here hasn’t been too awful (like in Chicago)!
jenn says
You are always knocking your fitness plans out of the park! I think it’s awesome!
Highlights from the week are Molly’s 14th birthday and our overnight sleepover in Sea World. My running was fine, but nothing phenomenal.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Jenn! I’m just starting to keep my consistency with the workouts.
You had some great highlights this week!
Renée says
d*mn you ROCKED last week Kim!!!
highlights last week? hmmm. definitely getting out with two girlfriends on Friday and Saturday for girl gabbing and movies. I guess I also needed that!!
Allie says
Love the “what the forecast” especially when the weather is ridiculous! Looks like you had some good classes to mix things up this week! Hope it warms up enough for you to run outside again…
kookyrunner says
Right?! The app brings me a lot of joy and laughs throughout the week.
The Accidental Marathoner says
The whole country knows about Chicago’s weather this week so I’ll just leave it at that. Currently on a plane to Dallas as 4 flights in a row from Chicago to Cincinnati were canceled. So I am trying to circumvent the weather and make it to Cincy by hook or by crook. My 1-1/2 hour direct flight is now (hopefully) ‘just’ a 12-hour connecting flight through DFW. UGH. You had a great week!
kookyrunner says
Ugh! That sounds so stressful. I hope that all of your flights work out.
Jenny Albertson says
Do you ever have those weeks where you look back and can’t think of what you did? That is me right now haha. I guess that’s why I do journal posts on my blog…I should go read it.
kookyrunner says
LOL yes! That’s why I have to write my workouts down in my journal. If not, I forget.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Looks like you had a good week of mixed workouts! That cold air from the polar vortex is supposed to hit here around Thursday, so brrrr…
kookyrunner says
Yeah I think we’re supposed to get the brutal cold soon – time to bundle up!
Cari says
Crazy that you were so much colder on Monday than the city when you’re only what, an hour north?
kookyrunner says
Right?! Yeah I’m not too far from the city, about 45-50 mins on Metro North.
Hannah says
That is some nasty windchill! Strange to watch the super negative temps in the rest of the country when Montana is warm….well, above 0, which is pretty warm for this time of year!
kookyrunner says
Actually we haven’t gotten hit too bad in CT – just a few really cold days. I don’t dare complain after seeing what the middle of the country is going through – their temps are nuts!
