Happy Sunday and what a weird weekend it has been! A Nor’easter came rolling through on Thursday night. I really didn’t think it would be bad but then we lost power at 3:30pm on Friday afternoon and it didn’t come back on until 5:45am on Saturday morning. Thankfully we have extra blankets so we weren’t cold at night even though we didn’t have heat. The cable and internet took longer to come back on (much later on Saturday afternoon) and it kept coming on for a few minutes, and then shutting back off. When I woke up today it was finally back on for good. These are definitely “first world problems” so as long as I have heat and hot water, I’m not going to complain!
I just finished week 10 of training so only 2 more weeks to go! I’m officially in the taper period š This is my most favorite part of any training cycle and I had a good week of workouts!
Monday 2/26
6 mile run + 100 supermans.
My legs were still sore from Saturday’s long run but I took this run at a nice easy pace so I could get through it. I had some weird hip pain but it went away by Tuesday (I’m thinking it was a “phantom pain” – you know those pains that pop up out of the blue during the taper period).
Tuesday 2/27
3 mile run + Yoga for Recovery (30 mins) + 100 squats
I figured my body could use a little TLC and yoga did just the trick. Those squats just about killed me though!
Wednesday 2/28
Boot Camp (60 minutes) + 100 russian twists.
We had AC and a working stereo for class this week – yay! It was also the last day for Rachel’s February Challenge. I also added up all my mileage for February and clocked in at 139.5 miles – woo-hoo!
Thursday 3/1
7 mile tempo run.
Started off a new month with a strong 7 mile tempo run.
Friday 3/2
Rest days are the best days š
Saturday 3/3
Strength Training (30 minutes) + I caught up on the first 3 days of Rachel’s Total Body Challenge.
After sleeping like a burrito on Friday night due to lack of power/heat, and not really having a great dinner (do cheese and crackers count?), I decided to move my long run to Sunday. Plus it was still SUPER windy outside so I was totally okay with my decision. I still wanted to get in a workout so strength training sounded like a good option!
Sunday 3/4
14 mile long run.
My last double digit run of my training cycle! This was a good long run, probably the best long run I’ve had in a few weeks. I had some major knee pain the last few miles. It reminded me of my previous IT band pain. I’ll be focusing on foam rolling that area a lot more in the next 2 weeks. I do NOT have time for that knee pain on race day! My back felt pretty good for this run so I have hope that it’s getting better (fingers crossed).
Total Weekly Mileage: 30
Total Training Cycle Miles ā 308
Grade ā A
Overall I was happy with my workouts this week. I definitely do not feel as tired as I did last week so that’s a good sign! I also paid more attention to my nutrition and hydration this week which I’m sure made a different as well.
I have to admit that it felt nice to wake up on Saturday and not do a long run. Granted I couldn’t stay in bed and watch TV, but I was very productive and had a major spring cleaning session/overhaul of my closet. Basically if I haven’t worn it in 2 years, it went into a donate or ‘sell on eBay pile’ (I posted some stuff on my IG stories if you’re interested). I felt super productive and any money I make from selling the items will into my vacation fund, so it’s a win-win!
Is it weird that I’m not feeling nervous for this race? I’m not overly confident like I was for Chicago (learned my lesson the hard way!), but I am really looking forward to the entire race weekend experience. Maybe it’s because this will be my last marathon….for a while. I never say never, but I just know that my body needs a nice long break from running super long distances.
Were you affected by the Nor’Easter this weekend? Do you enjoy the taper period?
Iām linking up with Courtney for her training recap link-up and Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.
In Case You Missed It
5 Ways to Stay Motivated During Marathon Training
Wendy says
I”m so glad you finished the week on a high note! I think it’s good to go in cautiously this time. But you certainly are well prepared!
I feel a little burned by ebay–I sold something this week and the post office lost the package. Then ebay charged me $11 to sell it. So not only am I out the item (I had to refund the seller’s money), I’m out the postage, AND the ebay listing fee. I would have been better off giving the item to charity.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Wendy! I think I’m well prepared, but you just never know!
Sorry to hear about your issue with eBay š I’ve only had one issue with eBay over the past few years but they are normally pretty good.
Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
I wasn’t feeling nervous for my last marathon either, but then again I was ready to get it started cus I was finally feeling good!
we just missed the storm here, although Verizon was down on Friday night!
kookyrunner says
I really hope that it’s a good marathon – I do know that it will be very pretty!
Kimberly Hatting says
I need to do a major overhaul in my closet…but I keep procrastinating (hoping some closet fairy will wave her magic wand and relieve me of the task). I’m glad your 14-miler went so well! I think that’s a great omen going into these final weeks before the big day š
kookyrunner says
LOL it’s definitely a long process – it took me a few hours! It looks so much better now so I’m ultimately glad that I did it.
Sara says
Yay for AC, stereos and a great long run. Glad to hear that you aren’t nervous going in to this race. I think that we enjoy the races more when we aren’t too hyped up about it. Enjoy the taper!! Rest up š
kookyrunner says
I agree with you! I’m really trying to go into the race with a great positive attitude and really enjoy the whole race weekend.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Thats great that you’re not nervous! Looks like you had a great week and made the right decision moving your long run to Sunday. Enjoy the taper!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Lisa. Yes I was very happy that I moved my long run to today. Running on Saturday probably would have been a disaster for me lol
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Wow I can’t believe the power was out for that long! Kudos to you for still getting a blog post up – you beat me and I have no excuse! š Congrats on reaching taper, time to cruise until the bit race day!
kookyrunner says
Ugh it seemed like an eternity but I’m just happy that it came back on early in the morning on Saturday. I know some people that didn’t get power back until today so we were lucky!
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
I”m glad you were able to have a good run without all that crazy wind!! It was still windy down here this morning but definitely not as bad as yesterday or even Friday. That nor’easter was crazy!!! I’m sorry you lost power for so long! My sister has been without for something like 50+ hours.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
You had a great week and it’s great that you’re not feeling nervous about your race! So glad your long run went well today – hopefully, the foam rolling will take care of the IT/knee issue.
Great idea to overhaul your closet – I’m long overdue! I’ve never tried selling on eBay – is it hard? I could definitely use some extra cash for the vacation fund š
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle!
I’ve used eBay for a free years and overall it’s been good – I’ve only had one issue with them. I think the key to selling things quickly is to have lots of good quality photos. I would prefer to sell stuff on Craigslist but I don’t love the idea of meeting strangers in person to sell stuff.
Lesley says
I saw a few people, and family, lost power on the east coast. I do not miss Nor’easters, at all. My parents have a gas stove, so if they lose power, at least they can heat up something for dinner. I’d be raiding the pantry to find something to eat. Clif bars would work.
kookyrunner says
Yeah I raided the pantry and it was either a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or cheese and crackers. I figured I should use up the cheese so that it wouldn’t go bad, lol
Stacey says
I think it’s good that you don’t feel nervous nor feeling over confident–I think that means you are ready for the race and have grown as a runner š Also, I did a mini closet overhaul during my big taper period last year and sold off some items to use for bike part upgrades–it was great to declutter and keep myself busy when the workouts decreased.
kookyrunner says
Glad I’m not the only one that finds mini projects to do during the taper time!
HoHo Runs says
Welcome to taper time. You’ve worked hard so I hope you’ll enjoy this recovery period. My PT always cautioned me not to foam roll around my knee, but closer to the hip for ITB pain. I’m just throwing that out there. Glad your power, etc. is back on. I can do without power for a while…but not hot water. UGH. Thanks for linking.
kookyrunner says
Thanks! Oh yes, I’ll be foam rolling closer to my hip vs my knee. Unfortunately this isn’t my first time experiencing this type of pain š
Deborah Brooks says
We lost power too and had crazy damage around our house. You have had such a great few weeks of training I am excited for you.
kookyrunner says
Oh no! I’m sorry that you had damage near your house. Luckily our house was okay but I saw a ton of broken tree bark and branches on the ground during my run this morning.
Marcia says
Cheers to feeling less tired and having your last double digit run done! That’s a wonderful feeling! Your weather was crazy. I don’t think I ever experienced a power outage that long.
kookyrunner says
It was a really great feeling when I finished the last double digit run! We don’t lose power that often at my house so it was a bit of a surprise. There are still people in my city today that do not have power – that’s 3 days without power for them, crazy!
Hannah says
I always enjoy the taper. And recovery yoga too…sounds like the best kind of training week.
kookyrunner says
Recovery Yoga is going to be my best friend these next 2 weeks! It really provides an awesome stretch
Jessie says
Oh my gosh, your race is so close already! It seems like this training cycle went quickly. Excited to hear about this race!
Strong week lady- always impressed by how much strength you fit in.
No power for the whole night- crazy!!! Did you lose all the food in your fridge? No heat!! Glad you stayed safe and warm!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much for the kind words Jessie! This training cycle was 12 weeks so it definitely feels like it went by rather quickly.
Darlene says
You should feel good about your workouts. I am so impressed. I can barely get out there to run and the weather doesn’t help things – A foot of snow on the ground with maybe another foot coming on Wed. Where is spring??
So I’ll be running 13.1 on March 17. I will be thinking of you. You got this!!
kookyrunner says
Ugh I really hope that storm on Wednesday doesn’t dump as much snow as they are saying – I’m sick of the snow, lol
So awesome that we both have races the same weekend!
Chaitali says
That’s exciting that your race is so close and you’re feeling good about it! And I’m glad your electricity wasn’t out for too long. A lot of people down here lost power too from the winds but we got lucky and didn’t lose power at all.
kookyrunner says
So glad that you didn’t lose power this weekend. That storm was pretty crazy!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Sounds like you had a great week (other than losing power). I totally embrace the taper. For a half. š
I am not usually super nervous — unless injured.
My knees are totally aching after yesterday’s run! I don’t think they’ve ever ached like this. I know it’s just coming back from not much running.
It sounds to me like you’ve totally got this & I really hope you get great weather, too!
kookyrunner says
I’m sorry that your knees were achy after your run but I think you’re right, it’s probably because you are coming back to running.
Clarinda says
You made it to the taper!! So exciting!! I’m glad to hear that you had a great long run over the weekend and that you’re not feeling nervous about the race. Enjoy your taper. Race day will be here before you know it!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Clarinda!
Chrissy @ Snacking in Sneakers says
We got hit with a rainstorm this past week too and so many people lost power. My in laws didn’t have any for like 3 days! We really lucked out that we didn’t lose it. Now it looks like a snowstorm mid week this week. Can we get to spring yet? lol
kookyrunner says
Wow 3 days is a super long time to go without power! We’re supposed to get a foot of snow starting tomorrow – ugh!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I’m glad you had a great week! I also did some spring cleaning on Saturday…it ended up being a bit of a workout! I’m sorry you had to deal with no heat/power…we were very lucky to not have any issues. The number of downed trees in our neighborhood is crazy!
Enjoy taper time!
kookyrunner says
LOL isn’t it funny how housework ends up being a workout? I looked at my FitBit on Saturday and I got in so many steps just from cleaning!
vicki says
You’ve had a great training cycle… enjoy your taper!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Vicki!
Jenn says
No n’oreaster for us, although we definitely had some chillier temps this weekend. I can’t complain, but I do hope you all are ok. It’s hard not having power during the summer, but I am sure it’s downright brutal in the cold of winter š
I’m sorry you’re not feeling as confident. You have been working hard and you are going to do great.
kookyrunner says
I would much prefer to not have power in the winter vs the summer – I HATE being hot!
San says
Sounds like you had a great training week! You’ll be ready at the start line!!
I am hoping to do a little closet overhaul too and am thinking about what to do with the things I want to get rid off… hadn’t had much luck with sites like Poshmark and Threadup, maybe I should try ebay?
kookyrunner says
I like eBay because it seems like I can sell stuff a lot faster there.
Angela says
Sounds like a great week! I wish you the best of luck at your marathon. I am quite new to running so there is no tapering yet – just slowly increasing my time and mileage! It seems like the nor’easter has hit all over – we went from what looked like spring coming to a huge dumping!
Best of luck!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Angela!
Yes, we’re supposed to get about a foot of snow starting tomorrow. Winter is going out with a bang, lol
Smitha @ FauxRunner says
I absolutely HATE the taper period when I’m training seriously with a time goal. I much prefer 2 week tapers with the high intensity thrown in.
Good luck at Shamrock!
kookyrunner says
I think I’m one of those rare runners that loves the taper. I like having the extra free time!
Esther says
Great job lady! It sounds like you trained really well and are ready to crush your race!
Enjoy your taper š
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Esther. I am looking forward to race weekend!
Nicole @ fitnessfatale says
It’s funny, I always look forward to the taper and then when it arrives I don’t like it at all!!
kookyrunner says
LoL, I think I’m one of those rare runners that loves taper time!
Shathiso says
Taper time already!! It’s crazy how fast time seems to have gone! Glad that last long run went so well – what a confidence booster at this stage of a training cycle. Taper Time! Taper Time!! š
kookyrunner says
I agree that this training cycle has gone by faster than most! The 14 miler was a great confidence booster so I’m hoping I can take all the good energy into race weekend!
Angela Cardamone @marathonsandmotivation.com says
Way to get it all done with the power outage and crazy wind! You will definitely be ready for this marathon!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Angela!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Yay for surviving the crazy storm we had on the East Coast. I agree, while its frustrating to not have cable and Internet, as long as I can stay warm that’s the most important thing.
kookyrunner says
Definitely! And now we’re getting hit with another nor’easter today. I guess winter wants to go out with a bang lol
Steph says
Awesome job on continuing your training for the Shamrock Marathon! You’re going to crush it!
That was definitely a crazy storm last week and apparently we’re getting another one tomorrow?!? Stay warm!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Steph! I see that you are also running Shamrock – I hope you have an awesome race!
The storm last week was crazy and now we’re getting hit with another nor’easter today – ugh!
Rachel says
I can’t believe how quickly this training cycle went. I feel like you just started training yesterday!
I know what you mean about needing a break. I think 2018 is my year of low mileage. As much I want to run high mileage and #doalltheraces, I think I need the reset after a crazy 2017!
Enjoy the taper, girl!
kookyrunner says
I think the time went by so quickly because this cycle was only 12 weeks. I think 12 weeks might be my sweet spot for training plans.
You did A LOT in 2017 so I think you are definitely making the right decision by doing less mileage this year – you have more than earned it!
