Happy Sunday! Is it just me or did this week seem really long? Daytime Savings time certainly didn’t help either. It will take me about 2-3 days to get used to the time difference. Although I’m happy that there will be more daylight hours after I get off work, I’m not looking forward to it being dark when I get to work tomorrow morning (I’m usually at work by 7:15am).
Although this week did seem long, overall it was a good week. Workouts and runs are getting shorter and I enjoyed having a little more extra time. Let’s discuss!
Monday 3/5
4 mile run + 20 supermans/20 pushups/30 second plank.
My knee pain continued on this run but I got through it.
Tuesday 3/6
Recovery Yoga (30 minutes) + 30 burpees.
I wanted to give my knee a break and thought that yoga would a nice low impact workout. I broke up the burpees into 3 sets of 10 and did them very slowly.
Wednesday 3/7
Unexpected rest day. I didn’t feel that great for most of the day (cramps, headache, etc – you know, lovely female issues), but I still got in 30 supermans/30 pushups/30 second plank for the Total Body Challenge.
Thursday 3/8
5 mile run + 40 burpees.
I did my 40 burpees before my run so that I wouldn’t chicken out and not complete them! Boy were they hard! This was supposed to be a tempo run, but I wanted to take it easy on my knee so I just did a regular 5 mile run.
Friday 3/9
Rest Day!
Saturday 3/10
8 mile long run and my last long run before race weekend!
It was a little cold when I started the run (really feels of 20), but I warmed up quickly. I had some issues with the wind during some parts of the run but overall it was good and I didn’t really have any knee pain.
It was also my last run in my beloved pink Mizuno Wave Inspire 11s. We had a good run (pun intended), but after 400 miles, it was time to retire them. Although it’s sad to retire a pair of sneakers, I feel better knowing that they will be worn by someone that can really use them (I donate my sneakers to Soles4Souls).
Sunday 3/11
2 mile run + spinning class (65 minutes/25 miles) + 50 burpees.
I was supposed to run 2 miles on Tuesday, but didn’t since I was resting my knee, so I added those miles to today’s workout. Spinning was great as usual and the music was awesome (a ton of oldies). I forgot to do my burpees for the Total Body Challenge yesterday so I had to do them today.

We had another nor’easter here this week, but luckily we didn’t get as much snow as they predicted (we were supposed to get over a foot of snow). I don’t know what it is, but the What The Forecast weather app gets really sassy around storm time. Here are two gems from this week that I posted on my Instagram stories(LOL):
I also received a lovely piece of mail mid-week. Not sure how in the hell I got on this mailing list but to say I was annoyed is an understatement. I don’t really need a constant reminder of my single status thank you very much!
Other than crazy weather and weird mail, this was a pretty good week. I think that taking 2 days off from running helped my knee. I was also icing it a lot which helped with the soreness. I’m in a positive mindset going into race weekend. Because I’ve had a lot of ups and downs with this training cycle, my new goal for the race is to finish. Sure, a PR would be amazing, but my mindset is totally “have fun” and “finishing is winning”! Hopefully when I write my weekly wrap next week I’ll be writing it as a 3x marathon finisher!
Do you enjoy the taper period? Do you do anything to keep you busy since you have more down time?
Iโm linking up with Courtney for her training recap link-up and Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.

What do you think is going on with your knee? Hopefully “just” a little tendonitis–and you’ll be fine for your race. I can’t believe it’s next week! I’m excited for you.
I haven’t checked WTF lately–he was going a little overboard with the “fricking” and “fracking”, but he sure gave you a gem! LOL!
kookyrunner says
I think it’s stemming from my IT band (I’ve had this pain before when I was training for NYC). I’m doing a lot of icing and foam rolling my quads and hamstrings to make it better. I think that it should be okay for race weekend.
WTF was really bringing the funny to me this week, LOL. I had to read both of those forecasts twice because they were so outrageous.
Kimberly Hatting says
I’m excited for your big race next weekend! Have you checked the weather yet (not that it will be accurate LOL)? I haven’t even checked ahead for my weather next weekend for my half marathon. I’ve never done a race of that distance this early in the season…hoping for pleasant temps and sunshine for the both of us. ๐
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Kim! I have checked the weather and while it’s a bit warmer than I would like (high of 62), the humidity is low and there is only a 30% chance of rain.
Marcia says
OMG that weather app is priceless. Definitely gets one’s attention! Haha! Hooray for race week! Eeek! I think the extra rest this week will help your ornery knee a ton. Glad the nor’easter under-delivered.
kookyrunner says
Yes! Those messages on the weather app definitely got my attention last week. I had to read them twice LOL
Sara says
Hopefully a little extra rest and TLC will help your knee for the upcoming race. Sending you all of the positive vibes! I hope that you have a great race day experience!
I also just retired a pair of shoes. I thought that I could sneak one more run out of them but that was a mistake that lead to some temporary knee pain. I’ll have to check out soles for souls….that would be a great way to repurpose running shoes.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sara! I think the extra rest this week will really help out.
I know that once my feet start to hurt, that’s when it’s time to retire my sneakers. For some reason my feet never really hurt when I run (luckily) so then they do, I know my sneakers are close to getting retired lol.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
So exciting that your race is next week! Sounds like you are all set. I hope that your knee cooperates and you can rest up this week!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Lisa! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a fun race weekend.
Coco says
I wonder if your knees were complaining about your aging Mizunos? At least that would mean new shoes would make them happy, right? LOL on the magazine. Once my husb got a “personalized” catalog suggesting he buy gifts for my daughter. Luckily she was the “other woman” he’d bought something for!
You are going to be in great shape for race day!
kookyrunner says
I usually alternate between 3 pairs of sneakers while training. I used those sneakers for most of my shorter ones. Luckily my ‘long-distance’ sneakers only have about 200 miles on them so they will be fine for Sunday’s race and hopefully my knees will appreciate that and cooperate!
OMG to the “personalized” magazine that your husband received in the mail – that is crazy!!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
That WTF app cracks me up!
I’m glad your knee calmed down for your run on Saturday. Hopefully, it continues to behave. I’ll be cheering you on next weekend!
kookyrunner says
That app is super funny! I hope that my knee doesn’t give me any issues on Sunday!
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I couldn’t tell you the last time I did 40 burpees in a day…..probably never! Great job! 400 miles? I thought the mileage was more like 500? Were they the ones you have been training with and you are changing shoes this close to a marathon?
kookyrunner says
It’s so hard to do that many burpees! I know some people that retire sneakers at 300 miles, it just all depends on the person. For me 400 is good because that’s usually when my feet start to hurt and that’s how I know it’s time to stop running in them. I used those sneakers for most of my shorter runs (under 8 miles) so I still have my ‘long-distance’ sneakers for Sunday’s race. I usually alternate between 3 pairs of sneakers for training.
HoHo Runs says
I hope you have a fabulous marathon! In my experience, what we fret about most never happens during a race. So, I predict you’ll have no knee pain! I admit, it’s hard for me to get rid of my running shoes. They are like memories. That does sound like a great organization, though. Good luck at the race. Thanks for linking!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Holly! I really hope that it goes well and so far the weather looks decent.
Deborah Brooks says
Hilarious weather app caption!! Something to think about I guess ๐ I am already thinking about coffee tomorrow morning. I have been exhausted all day!
kookyrunner says
The weather app provides daily laughs lol.
Daylight Savings makes me so sleepy – ugh!
Debra says
Good luck next weekend at Shamrock! Hope the weather turns out ok for you@
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Debra! So far the weather looks decent and only a 30% chance of rain.
Courtney @ eat pray run dc says
Rooting for you next weekend! You have a great attitude so Iโm sure itโll be a fabulous day! That mail is annoying – ugh!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Courtney! As of now the weather looks decent so I’m happy for that!
Oh yes, that mail was hella annoying. It immediately went in the recycle pile lol
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
You had a great week! So glad that resting and icing the knee made you feel better.
LOL the wedding magazine! Meanwhile I have random vendors calling me all day, every day. That’s really annoying, I don’t know how these people got my phone number!
Enjoy this last week before the race!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Janelle! I’ve notice that icing my knee on and off throughout the day has been super helpful.
Ugh! So sorry that you are getting so many random calls from vendors. I feel like companies must sell our address and phone numbers to these vendors so that’s how they get our information.
Chaitali says
Glad this week helped with your knee! And that weather app is definitely sassy ๐ How weird about the wedding magazine. That’s so strange that you ended up on their list.
kookyrunner says
Yeah the magazine was definitely weird and I really hope that it’s not a trend that continues!
Darlene says
Fingers crossed for a pain-free race. Can’t wait to hear all about it!!!!
I ran my last long run too on Sat.
I am leaving the frigid snow NE and running in hot humid Florida.
Not expecting an easy half.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Darlene! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for both of us for our races this weekend!
Lesley says
I thought I had more time with my old pair of running shoes, but when I was looking at the sole and saw all the wear, I knew I needed to retire those. I have my new pair, but I was hoping I’d be able to rotate between these 2 pairs to extend the life of my new pair.
kookyrunner says
Totally understand what you mean. Once I like a pair of sneakers I try to buy 2 or 3 pairs so I can rotate them for a while.
Shathiso says
The time is finally here. Have loved following you on this training cycle and cannot wait to hear how it goes. Three marathons – now that is no easy feat! So glad you decided to take it easy on the knee this week and the rest seems to have helped in your long run. I say you are ready – have fun, have lots of fun and I will be back for that race recap!! Go for it girl – cheering for you all the way from Botswana! x
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much and I have appreciated all of your support during my training!
Catherine says
I don’t know what it is about the taper period that tends to bring out little niggles. Hopefully your knee resolves itself. I’m excited to hear how the race goes for you. Sounds like you’re super ready for it!
kookyrunner says
I know – it’s so frustrating! This happens to me every time I taper for a marathon and it usually goes away so that’s why I’m not too worried about it.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I think the fact that the knee pain seems to be diminishing is a good sign. I hope you have a marvelous race — I hear that’s a fun one.
I definitely get on some weird mailing lists. And some I wish would go away — Fios, I’m looking at you — dish, too!
I love a taper. ๐
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Judy! I’m looking forward to race weekend.
LOL I get the FIOS mail too!!
AmyC says
Great idea to do the burpees before you run…I’m trying to motivate myself to do an arm workout after swimming. My couch is currently winning, haha.
kookyrunner says
LOL, why does the couch always seems so comfy?!
Stacey says
Good luck to you at Shamrock!! I don’t particularly enjoy taper, but to keep busy I bake and reorganize my closets.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Stacey! I use the taper period to get in extra stretching.
Toni says
Good luck at Shamrock, hope your knee does well! Daylight Savings has definitely been a challenge, my normal 5 am wake up call seems so much harder now.
kookyrunner says
Thanks for the well wishes! Daylight Savings time has me feeling super tired but hopefully my body will adjust by tomorrow.
Jenn says
The WTForecast app is pure genius. Really.
I hate the taper. And I willfully ignore most of the good taper advice because I am incapable of chilling out. I guess the first step of a problem is admitting you have one, right?
Can’t wait to see your next shoes. I am holding off to try out the Inspire 14s before I make my next purchase (I am torn between those, the Asics GT2000(6) and another pair of Guides). I’ve been running with two pair of shoes and I usually go for three, so I’m feeling a little incomplete.
kookyrunner says
I want to hug the person that designed that app, lol
I think Iโm one of the rare runners that loves the taper period. I use it to do a lot of extra stretching, dial in on my nutrition and sleep, etc.
I was not impressed with the Mizuno Inspire 12s or 13s (couldn’t run in them) so I hope that the 14s are good!
Chrissy @ Snacking in Sneakers says
I always get a little crazy during taper week. I feel like the thoughts of “did I train enough? Should I do one more run?” all start to flow through my head. The mental part is the hardest!
kookyrunner says
I think I’m one of the rare runners that loves the taper period. I use it to do a lot of extra stretching, dial in on my nutrition and sleep, etc.
Teresa says
Oh my gosh! I’m so excited for your 3rd marathon coming up! You are going to crush it, I just feel it. You’ve had such a great training cycle …rest that knee and go get ’em this weekend!! xoxo
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Teresa! The weather looks great for the weekend so that’s already a huge positive!
Annmarie says
Glad to hear you really didn’t have any knee pain on your long run and SMART to do those burpees before your 4 miler – I would have definitely bailed on them after lol
kookyrunner says
LoL, I know myself and I barely want to stretch after a run so I knew that the burpees weren’t going to happen after the run haha
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
400 miles in a single pair of shoes is quite a lot! Hopefully switching to a new pair will help with the knee pain. I also find that my body has a way of telling me when itโs time for new shoes. And those first couple of runs in that new pair always feels so incredible!
kookyrunner says
I agree – The first few miles in a new pair of sneakers is always incredible!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Good luck at your marathon this weekend! I hope your knee holds out for you without too much discomfort.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Debbie!
