Happy Sunday! Well this is it – my last weekly training recap for the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon. It’s been 12 weeks of ups and downs, but overall I was happy with this training cycle. If I ever do another marathon, I think I’ll stick with a 12 week training plan. Although this training cycle is over, I’m jumping right back into training for the Cleveland 8K and Half Marathon on May 19-20!
Obviously this was a light training week since the marathon was today, but let’s recap!
Monday 3/12
3 mile run + 50 supermans/50 push-ups/30 second plank.
This run felt great – no knee pain! After work, I went to the dentist to get a cavity filled. I guess she gave me a super dose of Novocaine because the right side of my mouth was still numb hours later. It was interesting doing my workout with that feeling and then having to eat dinner on the left side of my mouth, LOL.
Tuesday 3/13
Extra rest day, but I did complete 10 burpees for the Total Body Challenge.
Wednesday 3/14
2 mile run + 10 supermans/30 second plank/10 push-ups.
Took this run nice and easy and I was happy with the result. It can feel weird to run such little mileage during race week but I don’t let the taper crazies get to me.
I also tried cryotherapy after work. It was COLD but I actually liked it! Later on this month I’ll be doing a blog post about my experience.
Thursday 3/15
Yoga + 20 burpees.
It felt good to get some extra stretching and foam rolling done this week.
Friday 3/16
Rest/Travel Day! We flew down to Virginia Beach on Friday morning and hit up the expo in the afternoon. Although it was a rest day, I still did the daily prompt for the challenge – 20 supermans/30 second plank/20 push-ups
Saturday 3/17
TowneBank Shamrock 8K.
This was a really fun race π I loved the race route and all of the crowd support. Perfect way to start off race weekend AND it was an automatic PR since it was my first 8K race!
Sunday 3/18
Yuengling Shamrock Marathon!
I ended up running a little long (26.42), but I finished! I was on track to PR but then got hit with double leg cramps at mile 17 and I couldn’t recover. I walked/jogged/shuffled along for the remaining miles and crossed the finish line with a smile. I wasn’t expecting to PR this race so I’m happy that I never went to a negative mindset, especially after the cramps…and now it’s time for some champagne to celebrate! I’ll share a full race recap this week.
Total Weekly Mileage: 36.42
Total Training Cycle Miles β 363.2
Grade β A+
I just wanted to close this weekly wrap by saying THANK YOU to everyone that has followed along on my training these past 12 weeks. I so appreciate all of the support!
How do you celebrate the end of a training cycle or a race?
Iβm linking up with Courtney for her training recap link-up and Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.
Jessica @ I Am Teacher Fit says
Yay!! Way to go on your fantastic accomplishment. I’ve really enjoyed following your training. Good for you for staying positive in the midst of cramps. That cannot be easy!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Jessica! It was hard but I wanted to keep a positive mentality so that I didn’t freak out, lol
Sara says
Woohoo Congrats!! I hope that even though this wasn’t a PR race that it was a good experience and a great comeback race. Cryotherapy! I’m not sure how I feel about that – I hate being cold! I’m excited to hear what you think about it and catch up with the race recap. I usually celebrate with a burger or some other treat food plus some well deserved rest! Enjoy your recovery!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sara! I needed to do another marathon after Chicago to prove that I was actually capable of doing it! Cryotherapy was definitely a different experience, and I was freezing, but I felt so refreshed after it was over!
Kimberly Hatting says
First of all, CoNgRaTs on another marathon, and this one ended with a smile π Second, I think your race outfits are so cute without being frumpy (we’ve all seen those LOL). And, third, it’s SOOO great your mother runs these events with you (even if she’s not always in the same race). That’s amazing! Awesome job!!!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Kim! Well I’m not the fastest runner, but at least I can look good doing it, right? Hahaha
My mom loves doing races – we both run for the bling, haha.
HoHo Runs says
I’m glad you got to share the weekend with your Mom and congrats on the festive 8k and PR. I really like that distance, so much more than a 10k – for whatever reason. Marathons are already so difficult but then you never know what you’ll get on race day on top of that. Awesome job in managing the cramps that hit at mile 17 and crossing another marathon finish line!! Thanks for linking!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Holly! I feel like the 8K is really just a 5 mile, lol.
So true, the marathon doesn’t care about your training at all and I never know what to expect. I’ve never experiencing cramping and it was quite painful – yikes!
Catherine says
Congrats on the marathon! I was thinking about you and the other Shamrock marathoners this morning when I was following my sisters progress. She had similar issues around mile 18. That’s frustrating, but way to keep it positive! Even with all the training in the world you just never know what’s going to happen on race day. There’s a life lesson in there I’m sure. π
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Catherine!Oh I’m so sorry that your sister also experienced some cramping in the later part of the race π You are so right – you just never know what’s going to happen on race day!
Coco says
Woohoo! Congrats on doing so well despite those cramps. I don’t think I realized you were doing the 8K on Saturday – glad you had fun with that. Since i like ice baths, I think I’d like cryotherapy …. ice, ice, baby!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much! I had a lot of fun all weekend – the races were great and so well organized!
Marcia says
Any week with a marathon in it MUST get an A++++! Congrats on your races! Cannot wait to hear more. Crossing the finish with a smile is everything! I was just talking about Cryotherapy with my sports doc the other day. I’m all ears!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Marcia! I was so thrilled to cross that finish line and then sit down hahaha.
I would totally do cryotherapy again. I can see it really helping to aid in recovery, especially after a half marathon or a long run.
Deborah Brooks says
You totally rock girl! I am so impressed by all of your races. Way to persevere after those leg cramps. Look forward to reading all about it. A friend and I were just talking about Cryotherapy!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Deborah. You are always so supportive and I really appreciate it!

Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Congratulations!! That is a solid number of miles for training! I love to get a nice massage and eat ice cream after a race π
kookyrunner says
Thanks Becca! I don’t really have the super high mileage weeks when training (my max is usually 40), but I was happy with the number of miles for this training cycle!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Congrats Kim! It sounds like you had a great race weekend and I’m so glad you could stay positive and power through those leg cramps to finish your marathon with a smile. And, can I just say how much I love that you and your mom do race weekends together! Looking forward to reading your recap.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle! My mom is a rockstar and she really loves running and doing races too. We both run for bling, lol.
Lesley says
I hope you enjoy that champagne! Great job on both races. I also get a lot of Novicane at the dentist, but my nerves are sensitive.
kookyrunner says
The champagne was great but it made me so sleepy, lol.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Congrats on an awesome race weekend! Im so glad you had fun. Hope you had a good time celebrating!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Lisa! I don’t know if you can every “enjoy” a marathon, but I actually did have fun!
Stacey says
Great week–and way to top it off with the Whale Challenge! Huge congratulations to you! Can’t wait to hear all about it π
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Stacey! I’m hoping to have my recap posted by Wednesday!

kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Wendy! I’m looking forward to writing my race recap today/tomorrow.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I can’t wait to hear all about it! Looks like it was a beautiful day — I know the last few years haven’t been that great there.
I also love that you stayed positive despite the cramps — that’s not easy.
Congrats!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Judy! Oh yes, the weather was absolutely perfect! A little windy and cold at some parts, but nothing to complain about considering the messy weather this race has had the past several years!
Chrissy says
I’m super impressed at the back to back 8k and marathon! An 8K race sounds fun – I’ve never done that distance before and those are always unique races – plus, the st patrick’s theme! Can’t wait to read the marathon race recap – way to go!
kookyrunner says
This was my first 8K race and it’s a nice distance! I hope I can find more races in that distance
Celia (Chicago Jogger) says

kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Celia!

kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Janelle! I was able to work from home yesterday so I rocked compression socks and sweatpants all day long, lol
Rachel says
So proud of you on yet another marathon! Great job, girl!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Rachel! π
Jenn says
Ugh I am so sorry about those cramps! But you had such a fantastic training cycle and then back-to-back races like that!!! Incredible!
Plus, those medals are everything! I absolutely love the green in them!
Congratulations to you!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Jen! The leg cramps sucked but I was happy that I had a strong race before that happened. You never know what you’re going to get on marathon day!
Chelsea says

Have a great week!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Chelsea!

kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Jessie! I was able to work from home yesterday so I enjoy sweatpants and my compression socks all day long, lol
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
Nice to hear that you finished with a smile! Looking forward to reading your race recap. I have run this race several years and this year decided to run somewhere warmer. The weather always seems to stink at this race.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Lacey! The weather has been horrible at this race for the past few years but we lucked out with gorgeous weather this year!
Lora @ Crazy Running Girl says
Congrats on the finish!!! Sounds like so much fun. Sorry to hear about the leg cramps, ugh. Way to push through!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Lora! The leg cramps sucks and I just couldn’t recover, but I was happy that I had a strong race up until then.
Esther says
Congrats on finishing the marathon and the 8kPR!
I am all about celebrating accomplishments.
Canβt wait to read the full recap!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Esther!
Sherry says
