Happy Sunday! I’m happy to report that week #2 of marathon training is complete! You know, I thought training for a spring marathon would be great. I despise running during the summer and I actually welcome the cold weather, but I definitely got a little more than I bargained for these first two weeks. Let me explain…
Me: I’m so excited to train in the winter. No humidity or hot weather to deal with should be great:
God:
The weather was just downright ridiculous this week. I know many parts of the country have been dealing with brutally cold temps and snow so I’m sure most of you know exactly what I mean. Look, I love winter – I actually like cold weather, but day after day of freezing temps is a bit much. Luckily we’re going to have a “heat wave” here next week with temperatures in the 30s and 40s and I really cannot wait!
Okay, enough about the weather. On to this week’s recap!
Monday 1/1
Body works + abs class (60 minutes)
2.5 mile run
I love that the first day of the year started on a Monday! It was nice to get my workout done early in the day since I had the day off from work.
Tuesday 1/2
Rest day.
This wasn’t the plan, but I’ll never decline a happy hour with my colleagues. I had to meet them in NYC so by the time I got home it was almost 8pm.
Wednesday 1/3
5 mile run
Boot Camp (60 minutes)
Since I missed my run on Tuesday, I had to do it before my boot camp class (I might miss a workout on it’s scheduled day, but I’ll never skip a workout completely if I’m healthy and can do it). My legs were super tired after class – I slept well that night, lol.
Thursday 1/4
6.5 mile run
So this was when the “bomb cyclone” hit. I have never heard winds like that before – it was insane. I think we got 10-12 inches of snow although it didn’t seem like that much. Treadmill run for the win!
Friday 1/5
Rest Day
No workout, but I did tear these pages out of my Runners World magazine this month and taped them to my door. It will provide great motivation as training ramps up.
Saturday 1/6
14 mile long run.
On Friday night I knew that I would be doing this run on the treadmill. When I woke up on Saturday morning, the real feel temperature was -14…no thank you. I admire everyone that can run outside in that weather, but I cannot. I’ve done this distance on the treadmill before, so I knew I could do it. I gave myself a pep talk and then got to work.
About 9 miles in I took a stretch break…
…and then finally I was done.
Sunday 1/7
Spinning (60 minutes/25 miles)
What a great recovery workout for my legs! They felt way better after class was finished – maybe because it was so hot in the room!
Total Weekly Mileage: 28
Total Training Cycle Miles ā 52.5
Grade ā A
Overall I’m happy with this week although I wish that 3 out of 4 of my runs were not on the treadmill š I signed up for the lululemon 40/80 Challenge on Strava but none of my runs have counted since they were all indoors. If I can get all my runs done outside next week, I’ll hit at least 40K which is great, but I was hoping to hit the 80K. Oh well, what can you do? There’s always next year! š
I had a few aches and pains this weekend – primarily my left ankle. It feels stiff every morning but doesn’t really hurt when I walk or run. I used KT Tape on it for my long run and it was fine. Also I had a little pain in the front of my right kneecap during spinning class today but now it feels fine. I’ll keep an eye on both throughout the next week and adjust workouts if needed. I’m continuing to foam roll, stretch and do my PT exercises to hopefully avoid injury – I still have 10 more weeks of training!
How was your week? How are you dealing with running in this crazy cold weather?
Iām linking up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.

It’s hard to think that saying 30s and 40s is going to be a heat wave…..haha. Who can resist happy hour?
kookyrunner says
LoL I agree – I felt silly typing that, but at this point its so true!
HoHo Runs says
It’s great how you just got on the TM and got that 14 miler done. Very impressive! I love the idea of tearing out the magazine pages for motivation too. Enjoy your heatwave. You’ll probably be running in a tank top after what you’ve been through. š Thanks for linking!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Holly! I tried to put a positive spin on it since the treadmill is in the basement which means I don’t have to leave the house to go to the gym š
Wendy says
There is NO WAY I could do 14 miles on the treadmill and therefore I nominate you for beast of the week! Seriously. That is way harder than outside miles. You need to remember this when you’re running your marathon.
Thanks for linking!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Wendy!
Congrats on your new co-hosting duties š
LOL… you could totally do 14 on the ‘mill if you absolutely had to do it. I really tend to get in a zone and the time doesn’t drag on as much. Although on this run I started going stir crazy after mile 10. I’ll definitely remember that run when I’m running the marathon in March!
Sara says
You are killing it already girl! And you look great!! I totally agree with you, this year is a bad year for marathon training. Even though I hate summer training, I would rather suck that up than long runs in really cold weather. Keep up the strong work!
This week, I finally plan to go to a boot camp class on Tuesday! I’ll let you know how it goes.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sara! It’s been a not-so-fun 2 weeks so far but I know that things will get better. I’m looking forward to outside runs this week!
I hope you enjoy boot camp class – it’s a great total body workout!
Lesley says
I always tell people careful what you wish for š It’s crazy enough that my friends in Savannah got snow and ice, and it’s still there. Really unheard of with southern Georgia.
kookyrunner says
LOL so so true, especially these past two weeks! I still can’t believe she of the temperatures the South is getting. It was actually in the 30s in Florida this weekend for the WDW Marathon – craziness!
AmyC says
I think it was totally smart of you to do your runs inside – your weather has been brutal to watch! I have to get into the habit of documenting my aches and pains like you do. Then I might be able to figure out the cause.
kookyrunner says
I had a year when I was getting an injury every few months so now I’m really diligent about paying attention to aches and pains that are not just the normal soreness.
Deborah Brooks says
Well you certainly picked a tough few weeks to start marathon training huh? That will just make the actual marathon weather a breeze! This week is going to feel like summer around here š
kookyrunner says
Yeah it’s been a tough 2 weeks, lol. I thought that starting training on Christmas would mean good luck, but not so much haha.
I’m excited for our “springlike” weather this week. It’s sad that 30-40 will be a heatwave!
vicki says
Great week… why can’t we just have 70ish and low humidity year round š
kookyrunner says
Thanks Vicki! I’m actually okay with winter if the temps are around 40 degrees – that’s like perfect running weather to me!
Kimberly Hatting says
Somehow I missed the fact that you did 14 (4#(king) miles on the treadmill….oh my gosh. You are my champion!! There is no way this KIM (me) would ever even think of attempting that feat.
kookyrunner says
Oh don’t sell yourself short, you could totally do it if you absolutely had to! I much prefer running outside though!
Coco says
I guess you need to be careful what you wish for with winter training! We are enjoying the balmy weather on the ski slopes out west!
kookyrunner says
Haha very true! I should have been more specific when I said “cold” LOL
Jessie says
Happy hours are important too! I try to tell myself that sometimes, “THIS IS IMPORTANT TOO.” Balance š
Great week!
kookyrunner says
Definitely! I made a deal with myself to “have fun” with training this year and a part of that is not saying “no” to things because of training. Having a social life is super important too!
Teresa says
That’s an incredible week Kim! I am still in awe of your 14 mile treadmill run …the most I’ve ever done on the mill is 6 and lately, 4 seems brutal!! You’re definitely my hero!!! Enjoy those ‘warmer’ temps this week!!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Teresa! as long as I have good music or a good show to watch on the treadmill, I’m okay. I think the key is to break it up into shorter chunks in my mind.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
You had a really great week considering how awful the weather was! The last time I trained for a spring marathon was during the Polar Vortex of 2014. Thats probably why it was my last spring marathon lol!
kookyrunner says
Kudos to you for training during that winter – I remember how brutal it was!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
10-12 inches, wow! I think we had around 4 and that was miserable enough! I’m already feeling warm and the temperature is probably going to be in the 20’s today, haha! Great job getting that 14 miles done on the treadmill…I wish I could last that long!
kookyrunner says
Wow, I’m surprised that Philly didn’t get more snow – you guys were lucky! I’m hoping that we don’t get any more snow for a few weeks.
I’m so looking forward to this week’s heatwave!
Marcia says
Way to make the best of a tough weather week. I swear this extreme cold has sapped my motivation to run outside. I’ve been inside more than out as well. I’d entertained the possibility of a spring marathon but I runfess this cold snap kind of ended that.
kookyrunner says
I think most of the country will have warmer temps this week so hopefully that will give you more motivation to run outside! š
Anna @ Piper's Run says
We too had the same weather and then it snowed all kinds Saturday and last night. No school for three days in a row for my kids. Way to get in those workouts!
kookyrunner says
The kids are probably loving the snow days, but the adults, not so much lol.
Debbie says
Great training week! I admire anyone who can run more than 3 miles on the treadmill (my limit), so 14 is just amazing to me!
kookyrunner says
I think because I started my running journey on the treadmill I don’t hate it as much as other people lol
Vanessa says
Training outdoors in the winter can bring its challenges, but it looks like you made the most of it! I also really love your workout top “anything is possible”. Keep it up!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Vanessa! It’s been a struggle but I’m going to keep plugging through all my runs and training š
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
It is crazy to think that we’re excited for temps in the 30 but I can not wait! You did a great job this week – I’m still in awe of how you managed 14 on the mill!
kookyrunner says
I know right?! My run this afternoon felt glorious because it was 26 degrees š
Jessica @ I Am Teacher Fit says
You are so much tougher after those 14 treadmill miles! Way to go!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Jessica! I’ll admit – I felt pretty badass when I finished!
Nicole @ fitnessfatale says
What a great week, even with the treadmill miles!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Nicole!
Jenn says
That winter bomb cyclone was something else! We had it all the way down through Florida!
I am also going for the 40K in the Strava/Lululemon Challenge. I didn’t get any running done on vacation, so I think I should be able to make it up this week. We will see how it goes.
Yay for wine! It’s nice to be flexible and have some social time, too.
kookyrunner says
I went out for a run today after work so I’m hopeful that I can at least hit the 40k mark!
Definitely! Social time is so important, especially when training.
Toni says
Looks like a really awesome week!!!!! We thankfully didn’t have the super cold weather like the rest of the country, but it was pretty cold here for us too.
kookyrunner says
I heard that Florida was cold this past weekend too. It seems like overall the country had some very unusual weather!
Andrea says
The images from the snowstorm were unreal! I don’t blame you for staying indoors. Hope the warm up means you can get outside!
kookyrunner says
Thankfully things are looking much better this week and it’s already much warmer š
Sharon says
Sounds like a great week of training! Way to get your runs done on the treadmill! Glad to hear it will be warming up. Hopefully you get more runs outside next week.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Sharon! I’m hoping to get all my runs done outside this week!
Shathiso says
One of the questions I asked on my blog was if anyone else loves New Years starting on a Monday! You answered my question! I absolutely love it – it’s like a truly fresh start in every sense! The treadmill has become my best friend but only because we are dealing with extremely hot summer temperatures outside. Can’t we get some sort of middle ground?! My first spinning class is this Sunday. Have never been to one but I am quite excited!
kookyrunner says
Totally agree with you! New Year’s Day just felt like a total fresh start this year!
Oh my, the weather has been very extreme everywhere. Yes, we definitely need mother nature to give us some middle ground.
I hope you enjoy your first spinning class this weekend – can’t wait to hear all about it!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
This weather has been more than absolutely ridiculous and I think that we’ve all more than earned a break from the cold, snow, and ice. Keep up the great work! Pushing through this messy weather will make you that much stronger come race day.
kookyrunner says
I am very thankful for the break in the super cold weather this week – 40 degrees feels downright tropical!
Renee says
I am still in awe of your longass treadmill long run!!! Insane!
We have nothing like your weather here. It’s “cold” but that’s relative to your cold (meaning it’s not that bad but we still like to complain! )
kookyrunner says
Awwe thanks Renee! Luckily the weather is much better this week!
The Accidental Marathoner says
What a weather week it has been! Kudos to you for getting all those miles in on the treadmill. I don’t think I could do it!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much! It was rough but thankfully the weather is so much better this week!
Sherry says
Sounds like a great week of training! Way to get that 14 miler done on the TM! Glad the weather isn’t too bad over here, just the normal rain.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sherry. We’re having better weather this week thank god!
