Happy Sunday! Another week completed and another week closer to the Chicago Marathon π As we get closer to October 8th, I’m getting more and more excited to run this race! I also love seeing all the training pics on social media. It really feels like a majority of runners are doing the marathon this year.
Overall week 11 was pretty good – nothing too out of the ordinary. Let’s discuss this week’s workouts!
Monday 7/31
5 mile run. I couldn’t let the month end without running in my Ugly Christmas Sweater socks from Pro Compression (A little ‘Christmas in July’ vibe). I ended the month of July with 112 miles. My highest monthly mileage this year!
Tuesday 8/1
3 mile run + PT exercises (15 mins). I was in NYC for a SUPER busy day of work so by the time I got home I missed my body works + abs class π but I turned that frown upside down by running the Rock’n’Roll Virtual Run to earn my Pheidippides medal.
Wednesday 8/2
Stationary bike (30 mins) + PT exercises (15 mins).
Thursday 8/3
6.5 tempo run. Although I didn’t hit my paces, the tempo miles were still faster than the easy miles, so I’ll take it. Running more by effort than time at point.
Later on that day I enjoyed a Watermelon smoothie in honor of National Watermelon Day (there is really a national “day” for just about everything). I LOVE watermelon and this smoothie hit the spot on a hot day!
Friday 8/4
A complete rest day!
Saturday 8/5
Sometimes the weather just will not let you be great! Lots of rain and the possibility of thunderstorms all morning made me take this long run to the treadmill.
Sunday 8/6
Spinning class (60 minutes) + PT exercises (15 mins). How cute are these workout pants from Old Navy? I absolutely love the color!
Total Weekly Miles – 28.5
Total Training Cycle Miles – 240.3
Grade – B+
I gave myself a B+ this week because I didn’t do any strength training π Granted I missed my body works + abs class and boot camp classes this week, but I have free weights at home so I have no excuse. I was just being lazy when it came to doing strength work, so that will be a focus for this upcoming week.
Now let’s discuss that 14 mile treadmill run. The funny thing is, I’ve done this before so I am no stranger to double digit treadmill runs. I just set myself up with my music and water and got to work. The first 10 miles were great but the last 4 were a bit of a struggle. Nevertheless I finished and it really wasn’t all that bad to be honest!
After I finished my run, I jumped off the treadmill to grab some ice cold water (much needed), did all of my stretching and then got mentally prepared for an ice bath. I have to say that the ice bath did me a lot of good. Even though my legs were sore after the bath, when I woke up this morning, I didn’t have any pain. While I still enjoy epsom salt baths, I think I’ll stick with the ice baths for any runs over 12 miles for the rest of my training cycle.
So that’s it in a nutshell. I hope that you had a great week!
Did you have a good week? How do you adjust workouts when the weather is crazy?
Iβm linking up with Holly and Tricia for their Weekly Wrap. This week’s guest host is Heather so show her some love!
Iβm also linking up with the Jessβs (Jess Runs Atlanta and Jess @ The Right Fits) and Courtney for their Training Recap Link Ups!

Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
Kudos to you for doing 14 miles on the treadmill. I would die of boredom π
kookyrunner says
LOL thanks Deborah! It actually wasn’t that bad. I’m going to write a blog about how to survive a long run on the treadmill this week π
Sara says
Another great week of training! Bless you for double digit treadmill running. I don’t know that I could hang for that. Your spinning shoes are super cute! Where did you get them?
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sara. You could totally do a double digit treadmill run – I know it! My spinning shoes are really old (like 5 years!). My parents got them for me for Christmas so I’m not sure where they ordered them from – I’m sorry π
Debra says
Long run on the treadmill?? Serious props! Good luck on your training and I’ll see you in Chicago!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Debra!
AmyC says
I love the Christmas in July socks run! And I can’t believe I didn’t know it was National Watermelon Day. Maybe I can do a delayed version?? haha
kookyrunner says
LoL, you totally can! Watermelon should be enjoyed all year π
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Wow kudos to you for getting 14 miles done on the mill! I would lose my mind! LOL!
And, how did I miss National Watermelon Day?!
kookyrunner says
LoL, you could do it if you had to!
I almost missed National Watermelon Day too! I just happened to see a post on social media, haha
Coco says
Love the Christmas in July vibe! I swear by ice baths. Epsom salts just don’t work as well for me. Plus, in summer, they’re actually not that bad!
kookyrunner says
Agreed! The epsom salt baths are definitely more relaxing, and I’ll still do them, but the ice bath really, really helped my legs!
Lesley says
I’ve done 10 and 11 miles on the treadmill, and it wasn’t fun, but not super bad. I knew it was more important to get the miles in if I couldn’t do it outside.
kookyrunner says
Definitely! I think after a few miles it more of a mental game than anything else.
Fairytales and Fitness says
What??? I missed Watermelon day. I had no idea.
Those are some cute Christmas socks although I don’t even want to think about Christmas in July.
kookyrunner says
I know – I almost missed National Watermelon Day too!
Clarinda says
You have the cutest PC socks! I’m often tempted to get a grab bag when they have them, but am always afraid I’ll get something boring. lol.
Great job on the treadmill run and especially on the ice bath! Those are frightening! π
kookyrunner says
Definitely try the grab bag when they release it again – it’s such a good deal!
Kimberly Hatting says
I have probably asked you this before (but #oldage #memoryMIA)…what edition are those pretty red shoes? They are HOT! I love your Xmas in July theme…did you wear a Santa hat, too? π
kookyrunner says
Those are the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10’s, so they are a few years old. Gosh I wish they would make those sneakers again!
I didn’t wear a Santa hat, but I would have if it wasn’t so darn hot, lol
HoHo Runs says
That watermelon smoothie sounds delicious. I recently looked at the “national day” calendar. There’s a whole list of items for each day! My hat is off to you for that 14 miler on the TM. Back when I used one, I don’t think I ever went over 7.
kookyrunner says
It was delicious and totally hit the spot! I’m always surprised that there are national holiday for everything, lol
Marcia says
I’m still so impressed that you hunkered down on the mill the way you did. That’s mental toughness! Your socks are the best!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Marcia! It was a little hard for the last 4 miles but other than that it wasn’t too bad.
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
Congrats for getting it done on the mill!
Sounds like a pretty good week.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Julie!
Anna @ Piper's Run says
I totally missed national water melon day which is a bummer as I LOVE watermelon. I did however, not miss national chocolate chip cookie day!
14 miles on the treadmill – way to go!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Anna! The treadmill run was long, but not too bad!
Heather says
14 miles on the treadmill is certainly a feat! Way to get it done! I spectated at Chicago last year and fell in love with the City – it’s beautiful. I think I’ve talked my husband into going back to visit later this year, I’m excited! I love that you pulled out the Christmas socks for your last run in July – so fun! Thanks for linking up!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Heather! I’m so looking forward to Chicago and I know it’s going to be an amazing experience.
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Nice job! You still got those tough runs in which is most important! I’ve never run 14 miles on the treadmill…so kudos on that alone!
I was just joking that I should make a watermelon smoothie because Bret always buys one almost on a weekly basis lol. Yours looks good!
kookyrunner says
Definitely make a watermelon smoothie! I think the one I got from Robeks had some other fruits blended in.
The treamill run actually wasn’t that bad once I hit a groove!
Karen says
You get a double mile credit for a long on the TM LOL
Maybe i need an ice bath, which I haven’t thought about lately because i am not really doing long runs, but I have a tight calf…
Your Christmas in July is tooo cute!
A watermelon smoothie sound so good and even more delightful someone else made it lol I swear anything I don’t have to make I love!
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I felt a little bad-ass after I finished my run!
courtney @ eat pray run dc says
All the props for that treadmill run. I’d rather run in almost any weather to avoid the mill, lol. π
kookyrunner says
LoL, if it was light rain it would have been fine but it was raining cats and dogs π
Elle says
OOOH. Ice baths. Just CANNOT! Epsom salts and hot water for me. I can only do treadmill runs if I have movies to watch…. here is to another great week of training for you!
kookyrunner says
It’s definitely uncomfortable at first but after about 2 minutes I get used to it!
Debbie says
I salute anyone who can run 14+ miles on the treadmill! I can barely make it for three! Love your red, white, and blue socks. So cute!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Debbie!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Love the color of those leggings! No strength training for me last week either, but at least i had the excuse I was resting to feel better. π
Anyone who can do 14 miles on a treadmill is a beast. That is all.
And I definitely didn’t hit my paces this morning — the weather was great so it is what it is.
kookyrunner says
I’m glad that you are feeling better π I’ll see if I can hit my paces for this week’s tempo run/ If not, I won’t dwell on it.
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
I love your “Christmas in July” pic. What a fun way to get the last run of the month in!
kookyrunner says
Thanks! We have to make our runs fun right?!
Emily Renteria says
Congrats on your July mileage Kim! I’m sure it’s getting more and more exciting as you’re closer to the big race!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Emily! It felt good to finally break 100 miles for the month.
Sharon says
Congrats on July being your highest monthly mileage! Sounds like a good week for you! Your watermelon smoothie sounds so yummy! I could use one right now with it being hot out right now. π Also great job on your 14mile treadmill run!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sharon! July was a pretty good month for me in terms of mileage and workouts.
I want to recreate the watermelon smoothie at home!
Nicole says
Great week!!!
I definitely adjust my expectations for pace when the weather is really hot!
kookyrunner says
I can’t wait to run in the Fall so that I don’t have to adjust workouts so much!
Rachel says
Great week, Kim! 14 miles on the treadmill… you’re amazing.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Rachel! Sometimes in marathon training we have to do crazy things!
Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says
Huge kudos to you for doing a long run on the treadmill! I don’t think I’ve been on a treadmill in like 5 years. I’m not sure I’d know how to do it! Hmm, I do no recovery after long runs–no epsom salt bath or ice bath. If it helps that much, maybe I should try an ice bath? Although…ouch, right? How long do you have to sit in it for it to be effective?
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Jennifer! For the ice baths, I normally do not stay in there any longer than 15 minutes. It helps if you have a hot beverage to drink while you are in there, lol
Smitha @ FauxRunner says
Wow on the treadmill run! And great cycling mileage too! Those alone gives you a A++
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Smitha!
Jenn says
14 miles on the treadmill is pretty impressive. I don’t think I could do it!
You are rocking and rolling along! Great work!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Jenn. You could totally do it too!
The Accidental Marathoner says
What a good week you had! And 14 miles on the treadmill? That ought to count for double!
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I wish it did count for double! lol
Tricia@MissSippiPiddlin.com says
Kim you are going to do great in Chicago. I do hope one day I’ll get to visit this city even if it’s not to run another marathon.
Thanks for your support of the Weekly Wrap Kim my break has left me so out of the loop and I miss yall!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Tricia! I hope that the race goes well π
I hope that you are enjoying your much needed break from the Weekly Wrap!
Chaitali says
I love those Christmas socks! And way to go with that long run on the treadmill. The longest I’ve done on the treadmill is 10 miles. But it’s definitely a great option for when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
kookyrunner says
Thanks! They are my favorite socks and I would wear them all the time if I could, lol
vicki says
Looks like a great week of training!! Almost all of my mileage is coming from the treadmill lately, it’s just so dang hot and humid here.
kookyrunner says
Hopefully the heat and humidity will ease up in a few weeks!
Wendy says
Congrats on another great week! I love all your socks! and I agree with all the other commenters..way to be hardcore and get the run in on the treadmill. π
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Wendy!
Toni says
Great job on a great week. 14 miles on a treadmill…I give you kudos for that. I do not think anything could make me run on a treadmill for 14 miles….
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Toni. I didn’t want to skip my long run so the treadmill won, lol
Karen says
Christmas in July AND a watermelon smoothie?! You had am amazing week!! Great job with your workouts!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Karen – it was a pretty good, and fun, week!
Jessie says
Great week and thanks for sharing! That watermelon smoothie looks so refereshing.
I did my long run on the treadmill last week as well and it was not easy..I broke it up into 5k’s and that helped mentally.
Strong work!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Jessie! The TM is definitely daunting but breaking it up into chunks is such a life saver!
jill conyers says
14 miles on the treadmill. Way to go getting it done! Chicago is one of my all time favorite marathons.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Jill! I’m really excited for Chicago π
Sherry says
Way to get that long run on the treadmill! Love watermelon and didn’t know about National watermelon day! π
kookyrunner says
Thanks Sherry!
Agness of Fit Travelling says
I would love to attend this marathon! Excellent post. How long do you usually prepare for a marathon?
kookyrunner says
This time I’m training for 20 weeks but I trained for 16 weeks for my first marathon last year.
