I absolutely LOVE cold weather running. Yes, I’m one of those rare runners that will take 20 degrees over 80 degrees any day of the week. As long as I’m dressed properly, I can enjoy all of my outdoor runs in the Winter.
One body part I always protect is my ears. That’s why I was excited to test out the Buff Tech Fleece Headband, and today I’m sharing my review with you!
What is the Buff Tech Fleece Headband?
It is a technical headband for cold weather wear. Not only does it provide warmth for your head/ears, but it’s also wind resistance. In addition, it dries quickly during high-intensity workouts so it never feels wet or damp on your head. It’s made of brushed Carvico fabric, which is very stretchy so the headband can easily fit over a hat.
I’ve worn my headband on a few cold weather runs since last month. I’ve been so impressed that the headband never slips. Since the fabric is super stretchy, I always fit it over a baseball cap when I go running. It’s also super durable as I’ve washed it several times and it still looks like it’s brand new. Recently I rocked the headband during a super windy and cold 5K last weekend.
Do you run with music? Not to worry – you’ll have no issue fitting your headphones under the fleece headband.
The headband comes in three different colors – hatay, shading blue and northern lights. I currently have the hatay color, but plan on using a discount code to purchase the other two colors.

How do you keep your ears toasty on cold weather runs?
I’m linking up for Fridays with Fairytales and Fitness from Fairytales and Fitness.
I have a lot of Buff headgear and I love it all. I’d definitely wear the fleece headband–it gets so cold here and I think it would keep my ears nice and warm!
I love the headband because sometimes I don’t want to wear a big winter hat so it’s a great option!
I often layer a fleece headband under my stocking hats in the winter…this buff looks like it would work awesome for that!
Oh this would be perfect for that!
I usually only use the gaiter over the hat trick when it’s really windy. Otherwise, I put my sunglasses over my hat — and in winter I wear a beanie. It’s also much kinder to my hair.
I agree that I’d rather run in the cold than the heat (especially with humidity) but I also have a lot of trouble motivating myself out the door when it’s cold, too! Sunday is going to be a challenge (cold AND windy!).
I love the Buff gaiters too – I love when races give them out as race swag! I normally wear them around my neck, but have work them as headbands which can be a little hard sometimes like you mentioned. That’s why I like the fleece headband 🙂
Looks great! I have a bunch of buffs I have accumulated over the years as race premiums. I think they give them out at a lot of trail races. None of them are fleece, though. Fleece sounds toasty for those cold, winter runs!
I always love when races give out Buff items – especially the neck gaiters!
I have not tried Buff headgear yet. I guess it’s time to change that. It looks good on you. I like the blue one!
Thanks! I really like the blue one too – I can’t wait to order it when I get home from work.
That looks like a great product, thanks, Kim. Will definitely be trying that out when I’m back in colder weather. I like the photo where you are sporting the Buff!
Awesome – so glad you enjoyed the review!
I have one of the Buff headbands/scarves and I love it during the colder months!
It’s perfect for the cooler weather!
This sounds great! One of the issues I usually have with headbands is figuring out how to wear them with sunglasses. And I love that these are nice and wide!
Good point about the sunglasses! I was able to wear mine with no issues which was another bonus!
Oooh I love that there’s fleece involved! I’m not sure why I’ve ever tried the headband over the ball cap trick but I need to. I too will take 20 degrees over 80 anyday for running.
It’s really great because the fleece isn’t too thick so you don’t sweat a lot.
I like that you can wear this over a hat! Not a big fan of running in cold weather but with the right gear like this one, I can bear it. Thanks for the great review.
That’s the best part – I often wear baseball caps when I run but this is good to keep my ears warm.
This is my first time hearing about this. Seems like a must-have now that it’s getting so cold out!
Definitely – it’s great!
Ooh nice! I have lots of buffs and pretend buffs but I’ve not seen the fleecy ones. I use that exact same method to keep my cap on in the wind, I think I got the idea off Chocolate Runs Judy!
It’s such a great idea, especially for those super windy runs!
I have an Under Armor cold gear hood type buff. I can also put it around my mouth if I want, or roll it down so it it just on my neck. It is a must for me for winter running. It does get quite warm though.
Thanks for linking up with us. -M
I love UA Coldgear items – they are SO good!
I was just looking to buy headband for running. This is a great review. Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s helpful!
Glad that you found it helpful!
Love that Hatay pattern. I’m with you on 20 > 80. Even though I didn’t want to get up and run Saturday that was more “Tired and comfy” vs. cold is a turn off.
I love meeting a fellow cold weather runner 🙂
