Happy Friday and Happy Earth Day!
I’m participating in the Friday Five link up with Courtney from Eat Pray Run DC, Mar from Mar on the Run and Cynthia from You Signed Up For What?!.
Since today is Earth Day, I thought I would discuss five ways that you can be a “green” runner. We all run in the great outdoors, so it’s our responsibility to be kind to Mother Earth!
Recycle your nuun tubes
If you use nuun, consider recycling your empty nuun tubes. Click here to view some ideas on how to re-use your nuun tubes. In addition, nuun tubes are recyclable at any facility that accepts #5 plastics.
Don’t litter!
There’s nothing worse than running on a trail/path or during a race and seeing tons of empty gel packets on the ground. Not only do these packets leave sticky residue, but it’s just plain rude! Don’t be “that” runner – throw your empty packets in a garbage can or stuff them inside your running belt, bra or pocket.
Run
Yup, it’s just that easy…run! Need to mail a letter or pick up something from the store? Why not run or walk to your destination instead of driving? Not only will this save you money on gas, but it helps you get in some extra miles and exercise as well!
Stay hydrated with your water bottle
Use an insulated water bottle. I currently use this one and it’s perfect. It keeps my water cold for hours – perfect for a workout at the gym or to keep in my bag for after a long run. It’s much better, and more cost efficient, than constantly using plastic water bottles.
Shop on eBay
Do you shop on eBay? If not, you should! Sometimes you can find great deals on gently used, or even brand new, running books or clothing. When you purchase items on eBay your not only helping someone create extra space in their home, but your also removing one more item from our landfills.
Do you have any suggestions on how to be a “greener runner”?
When I was running on my trail last week I saw a sign for a “clean up day”. Turns out I just missed it by a few hours. Totally wouldn’t have mind helping to clean up my favorite trail!
That’s so awesome that the trail was hosting a clean up day!
Doing errands on the run is one of my favourite things – the kids (both toddlers) love it when I pick them up from school with the double jogging stroller!
That’s so cool. You get quality time with the kids and you get to exercise!
Great tips! I stopped using plastic water bottles a few years ago and now only use a reusable one! 🙂
Me too. I also use a Brita water pitcher at home. I drink a lot of water, so if I didn’t use it, I would be wasting SO many plastic bottles!
Great tips! I always forget about buying things second-hand at consignment shops or online. But it’s a great thing to do to limit the amount of stuff produced!!
Totally! I really love shopping on eBay because I feel like its a win-win situation.
Shopping on eBay! That is an awesome tip! I don’t need an excuse to go shopping though but if I am saving the environment, then BONUS!
LOL I totally agree. If you are helping to save the environment, then we must shop! Haha
eBay for the WIN! You can always get that old model of shoe that you think fits better for a cheaper price! Sometimes you even get free shipping!
Exactly! I don’t care about having the newest model of sneakers. As long as they work for me thats all that matters!
