Happy Friday! Since it’s the last Friday of the month, I’m linking up with Marcia from Marcia’s Healthy Slice for Runfessions.
I’m also linking up for Friday Five 2.0 with Rachel from Running on Happy and Lacey and Meranda from Fairytales and Fitness.
We’re at the end of July already? How did that happen?! Not that I’m complaining! I can’t wait to get to late September/early October to hopefully start enjoying Fall weather 🙂 I had a decent month of marathon training, but no races this month. In fact, I don’t have any races next month either and I’m okay with that.
As with every month, I’ve got a few things to get off my chest.
I runfess that I will not run a marathon in 2018*
I pretty much made this decision earlier in the month. At first I decided that I wouldn’t run a Fall marathon, but then I decided against any marathons. I think I would like to focus on half marathons and shorter distances next year. It will be nice to get away from the long runs for a while as well.
*I did throw my name into the lottery for the 2018 London Marathon. Of course if I get selected, I will run! But if I don’t – no marathons for me.
I runfess that this week proved I am a sucky summer runner
We FINALLY had a break in the heat and humidity this week and I very much enjoyed it. I was smiling like a crazy person during my runs earlier this week. People probably thought I was slightly crazy, but I was just SO happy to run and not feel like roadkill when I finished. I enjoyed the breeze, lower humidity, and just the ability to REALLY enjoy the run.
I know that all runners struggle with running in the summer, but most eventually get used to the temperatures – I never do. It’s literally a struggle for me every single run. On the flip side, there are some runners that feel the same way about running in the winter. We all know our strengths and preferences when it comes to running, and there’s no shame in admitting that.
I runfess that I’m sick of stores pushing products too early
Two examples to share with you. Target, Walmart, Staples and even drug stores were advertising for “Back to School” in late June. Umm…the children literally just got out of school, so how are we already talking about back to school?! If I were a parent or teacher, this would give me total anxiety! On Wednesday night I went to the supermarket after my boot camp class and I saw a display for Halloween candy. Granted, it was a small display, but still – it’s July!! Who the hell is buying Halloween candy now? It’s just nuts and the stores need to calm down a little bit.
I runfess that I’m over online dating
Ladies, if you’re not single, consider yourself lucky! Online dating is is like driving a runaway car into a dumpster fire. The guys are either totally immature, weird and creepy, lie about their age or want to play games. I literally have zero tolerance for foolishness and I’m way too old to play any games. At this point I think I’m just giving a donation to the website, lol.
I runfess that I had serious FOMO from all the BlogFest posts
I absolutely loved seeing all the posts and videos from BlogFest and wish I could have been there! It literally looked like one big fitness party. Quite a few bloggers that I follow attended the conference and they all had nothing but positive things to say about it. I’ve never been to a blogging conference before, so I hope I can make it one year. I just wish it could be on the East coast since cross country tickets are so expensive!
That’s it for this month – thanks for reading my runfessions!
Do you have anything you want to runfess for July?
Marcia says
Summer running never gets easier for me either. I just get slower. I swear I’ll boycott those companies that jump the gun like that. Back to school too early is a total buzz kill. Halloween? No. Just no. Who even buys that now?? If not London, I think I’ll be sans marathon next year too and that’s just fine by me.
kookyrunner says
I feel bad for complaining about the weather so much, but it’s really sucking the joy out of running for me!
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
Summer running has me whining a lot lately. Will be so happy when that is over! There is pressure out there to run full marathons but they are not for everyone. It takes just as much dedication and commitment to train for a half. On line dating? Have not had to try that but it looks miserable!
kookyrunner says
Definitely agree. I give so much credit to people that run multiple marathons a year but it’s just not for me.
Chaitali says
Ugh… I’m with you on the stores pushing things too early in the year. It drives me crazy. And I feel you on the Summer running. I’ve gotten used to the heat and humidity and am fine with it now but that’s how I feel about running in the Winter. I never seem to get used to the cold.
kookyrunner says
It’s just so crazy to me! Last year I saw Christmas ornaments in the Hallmark store in August…August!!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I’m with you on the summer running – I just never seem to acclimate so it’s more about enduring and waiting for October!
I saw Back to School stuff in the stores right after the 4th of July and wanted to scream – I swear retailers push stuff earlier and earlier every year!
kookyrunner says
That’s the best way to out it – just enduring it and waiting until October lol.
Reca says
I don’t know if the school thing is due to school starting so early in Georgia. My daughter starts on Tuesday and we have friends in a neighboring county that start on Monday. We do get a fall and winter break week in addition to the two weeks at Christmas and a week for Spring Break. I am hoping it’s a national commercial at the very least and not something local!
I struggle so much during the summer. While it’s never “easy” for me, my body definitely revolts and I just do the best I can. Just a slight increase in temps or humidity can make a huge difference even week to week. I keep going because I know I’m still better than prior summers.
kookyrunner says
Wow, they start so early!! Students around here usually start the last week of August or right after Labor Day.
Very true about the weather. This year has been more humid that normal, so I do wonder if that is making the runs more unbearable for me.
HoHo Runs says
Who the hell IS buying Halloween candy already? It is completely ridiculous how we pushed into events months in advance. You KNOW what will be after the Halloween candy… And, don’t get me started on the summer weather. 😉 You won’t be able to shut me up.
kookyrunner says
LOL exactly! I was like who is buying candy now to save for 3 months? That’s insane!
The summer weather is just…I have no words!
Rachel says
Let’s go to Blogfest together next year. Want to??
And I’m with you — no marathons for me next year. I’m focusing on trails and 5Ks. 🙂
kookyrunner says
YES! If I can find a decent priced flight I’m so there!
I feel good about my decision to not run a full marathon next year.
Lesley says
My cousin posted a picture earlier this month of the Halloween store putting out hiring signs. He claimed it was too early since it’s only July, but I pointed out Christmas will be out Oct. 1. Some stores never put Christmas stuff away anymore.
kookyrunner says
That’s so true about Christmas items. I have literally seen Christmas items in stores in August.
lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I have been major slacking with my mileage this summer due to the humidity. But I would take this any day compared to the winter mths and the bundling up.
kookyrunner says
For some reason the cold weather doesn’t bother me too much when running, but when it’s below 10 degrees that can be a struggle!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Halloween candy? REALLY????
I really didn’t have FOMO over Blogfest — or only very little, anyway — I was kind of traveled out. And I almost went! Or at least I thought about it.
But it DID look like a ton of fun and I’m already seriously considering trying to work it into the schedule next year. We’ll see if it’s free again.
I love summer. But just not a fan of summer running. Of course, it’s cooler up here than it is down there.
kookyrunner says
Totally understand what you mean about the travel. Sometimes you just need a break from that! I think it’s in California next year which would be a cross-country flight for me. If I can find a cheap flight, I’m there!
Nicole says
Agree – the stores bring out the holiday stuff way way way too early!!!!
kookyrunner says
It makes me not want to buy items!
Abby @BackatSquareZero says
You know my thoughts on summer running ans a 2018 marathon already.
I too am with you with decorations and such coming out way too early. The school stuff in June made me want to cry. Also, the Christmas in Sept/Oct drives me NUTS!
Oh an online dating… I took all 2016 and 217 off online dating because.. ugghhhhh
kookyrunner says
Yes, seeing Christmas stuff in August/September drives me absolutely bonkers!
Online dating is such a disaster lol
Kimberly Hatting says
I had thought of finding a fall marathon to do…Grandma’s went well considering my long runs were a little jacked (like, MIA)….but,as you know, things took a drastic turn for me a few days after Grandma’s. So, there will be no fall marathons….and I kind of breathed a sigh of relief when I was first coming to grips with my surgery and the mandated recovery time I’d need. I can’t even feel guilty about no marathons this fall because it would be impossible LOL
kookyrunner says
LOL very true!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I hear you on summer running. I despite it LOL and much prefer the peace and tranquliity of winter runs. But I’m sure you’re handling the heat better each year!
London would be amazing, I hope you get in! I’m still deciding if I want to embark on a marathon in 2018…I feel like I need to get it out of my system sooner than later.
OH, online dating…that is a tough one. I had my struggles with it for a couple of years. Thankfully I ended up finding Bret that way. So there definitely is hope to find a good guy, but a lot of losers to sort through, unfortunately! Hang in there!
kookyrunner says
Yes, London would be amazing and I would definitely run it if selected through the lottery!
That’s awesome that you found Bret via online dating – gives me hope!
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
I runfess that I give SERIOUS kudos to anyone in the dating game. I got stupid lucky with my husband, and I am WELL aware of that. I would be the worst dater EVER.
kookyrunner says
Ugh it’s so crazy annoying. I feel like it’s such a waste of time sometimes!
Karen Bayne says
I was at a store and saw pumpkins decorations lined up and just shook my head – crazy in 100 degree weather!
Summer running never gets easier for me either – I just try not to die. I have been very sick in the heat in the past and it is win that I have felt in tact after all my runs.
I work with some young ladies and the online dating thing is tough!! They get some creepers…
kookyrunner says
That’s so crazy that you already saw pumpkin decorations!!!
Clarinda says
BlogFest is in San Diego next year, so not east coast, but you should still try to go! I went this year because it was literally down the street, but I’m hoping to swing San Diego next year.
Maybe I wasn’t following you last year (or not following as closely?!), but this summer seems like it has been a tough one with all the humidity. I was so glad to see you had a little break from the summer hell this past week. Keep slugging through, and fall will be here soon! 🙂
kookyrunner says
I do love San Diego so that is ver enticing lol.
This summer has been worse than last summer. I feel like its just super humid a lot which is making the runs that much more difficult!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
I wish there were some sort of fitness blogger’s conference on the east coast. If you hear of one, let me know!
kookyrunner says
Me too! If I hear of one I will definitely let you know!
Coco says
Summer running makes fall running awesome in so many ways! So glad I don’t have to deal with the data sites — so much bs!!
kookyrunner says
It really does. I honestly can’t wait to start enjoying my runs again.
Hannah says
I never get used to summer weather either. I know you are supposed to adapt physiologically after a few weeks, but I’m not sure my body knows anything about that.
kookyrunner says
I agree. I don’t think my body got that memo at all this year.
The Accidental Marathoner says
Now you know you are getting a spot in London for sure, right?
kookyrunner says
LOL, after I published that blog I had the exact same thought
Angela @marathonsandmotivation.com says
I agree with the stores pushing the products too early! My kids got out of school late this year and they were already advertising for Back to School before they started their Summer vacation…ugh!!!
kookyrunner says
Ugh, that’s so annoying for both the parents and the kids! Just let the kids enjoy summer without having to see school supplies everywhere in the stores!
Sara says
I’m with you! Every single summer run sucks….I don’t adapt. Pretty sure my husband just thinks I’m whiney in the summer but he puts up with it lol!
I didn’t do any marathons this year and it has been marvelous! It’s nice to take a break every now and then.
kookyrunner says
I’m so glad to hear that I’m not the only one – I was starting to feel like I was crazy!
Anna @ Pipers Run says
I too, can’t believe that’s stores have school stuff put already. I’m not ready to think about that yet. There should be a rule, no earlier then 2-3 weeks before school starts.
kookyrunner says
I agree with you!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
I don’t blame you for needing to take a break from marathons next year. Marathon training takes a lot of time, dedication, and hard work, and sometimes our time and energy needs to be put elsewhere. Kudos to you for knowing your limits.
kookyrunner says
Totally agree with everything you said. I also think my passion for it has lessened a little, which is making runs more difficult.
San says
Luckily, my ‘dating life’ (which never really existed in the first place ;)) was over before the world of online dating. I dont’envy you one bit – it sounds awful.
kookyrunner says
LOL yeah it’s pretty rough out there!
