Happy Monday!
I’m writing to you post-marathon! I have so many thoughts that I’ll share in separate recaps. Week 16 was my last week of training and it went pretty well!
Monday
Yoga. Started off the week nice and easy. I also gave out Halloween candy to a bunch of very happy kids. In addition, when I added up all my miles for October, it ended up being my highest mileage month ever!
Tuesday
3 mile tempo run. Temperatures were perfect and the run was fabulous!
Wednesday
Rest Day
Thursday
2 mile run + NYC Marathon Expo!
Friday
Another rest day!
Saturday
Dash to the Finish Line 5K (recap coming this week)
Sunday
TCS New York City Marathon! (recap coming this week or next week)
Total Miles – 35 miles (I ran long on the 5K and the Marathon)
Training Cycle – 472.65 miles
Grade – B+
Overall the week went well but I’m not happy at all with my time for the marathon. The course was harder than I anticipated between all the bridges, the rolling hills in Brooklyn and the include on 5th Avenue. My IT band was not having it and it was very painful. Don’t get me wrong, I am ecstatic that I actually finished my first marathon, but I trained for a 5:00-5:15 finish so to finish 30 minutes past that goal is disappointing. But on the flip side, it’s an automatic PR!!
Thank you all for following me on my journey to my 1st marathon! The running community is really full of awesome people!
I’m linking up with Holly and Tricia for their Weekly Wrap.
I’m also Linking Up with the Jess’s (Jess Runs Atlanta and Jess @ The Right Fits) for their new link up for training recaps!
Have a great week and thanks for stopping by my blog!

CONGRATS ON BECOMING A MARATHONER! I really, really hope that you will be able to push past your disappointment in your time and celebrate what an amazing accomplishment it is, ESPECIALLY since race day threw some tough challenges at you. If you hadn’t put in the work, you may not have been able to finish at all! It’s been so fun following your journey. I can’t wait to read your race recap! In the meantime, enjoy recovery and buy all the 26.2 things!

Thank you so much Jess! I’m sure after today the finish time won’t bother me as much, but it just stings a little since I KNOW I an do better. But even now I still can’t believe that I did it – holy smokes!! But you are so right – if I didn’t train hard, I could see how that would have turned into a DNF, so I’m happy for that! I plan on resting all day today and I’m going to try to book a massage for tomorrow 🙂
Kimberly Hatting says
Woot woot!!!!! Congrats! You’ve done something that less than 1% of the population has ever attempted, so be proud and ride that wave 😉 I’ve heard NYC is a tough course! Now matter how much you train for it, 26.2 miles is still 26.2 miles.
kookyrunner says
So very true Kimberly! 26.2 miles is no small task! I’m definitely going to try to enjoy my accomplishment and not focus too much on the time aspect of the race
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Congratulations!! And I didn’t realize you were running a 5I the day before, wow! I’m sorry that your finish time wasn’t what you hoped but you’ve made a huge accomplishment on a really tough course! Hope you’re feeling better and recovering well!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Janelle! It was hard and I’m feeling it today, that’s for sure! Cant wait to cheer you on virtually soon!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Congrats and welcome to the marathon club! Finishing is winning, but I def know that disappointment of not meeting a finish time goal. I’m looking forward to your recap.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Wendy! I am so happy to be in the marathoner club. I hope to have the recap up this week!
HoHo Runs says
Congratulations, MARATHONER! Races always throw something at us. It’s how we manage it and keep pushing to that finish line that counts. You should be proud of that finish time! (And heck, you ran a 5k the day before too. Impressive!) There’s plenty of time to run many more marathons and push for shiny new PRs too! Thanks for linking, Kim!
kookyrunner says
That’s so true! I am so happy to be a marathoner. I think if I run the race next year I will not run the 5k the day before even though it’s a really fun race!
Sharon says
Congrats lady!! You are a marathoner and finished a tough course! Way to go! And Vegas coming up right? You are amazing! Hope to see you there!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sharon! Yup I have Vegas this weekend. Looking forward to finally meeting you!!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
I was going to say automatic PR on your first marathon! Congrats on the finish! I know it can be disappointing to train and not hit your goal time, but finishing a marathon is a HUGE accomplishment. I know you’ll get that goal time soon!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Montana! I was sad about it for a little while but today I woke up and it finally hit me that I ran a freaking marathon!
Marcia says
I thought of you all weekend long and was thrilled to see your finish pic on IG. NYCM is a TOUGH course. I can’t even imagine how tough it would be as a first marathon. I can tell you this: Your body will handle and recover from subsequent marathons so much better, I promise. Bodies have a beautiful way of remembering and adapting. I don’t have to tell you this, but FINISHING IS WINNING! So own it girl, you are a rockstar! Can’t wait for the full report.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Marcia! As you know it was a long 16 weeks of training and while I had doubts before I started training, I went into the marathon feeling prepared. I underestimated the course – thats for sure! Way more hills and inclines that I thought! Today I’m still sore but its getting better. Thanks again for all of your support!
Teresa says
Congratulations! You’ve done something I will never be able to do, so my hat is off to you! Yes, I’ve always heard NYC is an incredibly tough course with the bridges and all. Also, I’ve had friends say that the long wait to the start line has a huge affect on one’s time as well….they were physically and mentally tired before they even got started. We are all proud of you ….marathoners and non-marathoners alike! Bask in the glory!
kookyrunner says
Thank you Teresa! I can agree that the late start time really through me off. I din’t start until 11:15 but I was on a bus to the start at 7am so that made for a very long morning! The course was hard but I still had fun.
Sherry says
Congrats on your first marathon!! Sounds like a tough course! My first marathon didn’t go well either. Enjoy being a marathoner! There’s always next time, right?
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sherry! It was a tough course but I feel like I need to do it again for redemption!
Karen @ Fit in France says
Congrats again on the marathon. Those bridges were HARD. The course was generally harder than I expected too. Can’t wait to read your recap. I am working on mine too, hope to have it finished in the next couple days.
kookyrunner says
Yeah I think I definitely underestimated the bridges! I’m posting my recap later on today.
Tricia Vaughn says
Great job on your marathon again highest mileage month too!
Look forward to the recap I’ve been hearing about the bridges being so hard! It is an automatic PR for you! Have a great week Kim!
kookyrunner says
I really enjoyed the automatic PR! LOL
Zenaida Arroyo says
Congrats on finishing your first marathon!!! Finishing is finishing but I understand your disappointment. You did the work but you just never know what marathon day will be like. Take it as it is and be proud of your accomplishment.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much! I am feeling much better about the race now that I am a week removed from it.
