Happy Friday! I’m happy to close out the week with an awesome product review!
To be honest, I haven’t really trained using fuel in a couple of months so I was happy to get this opportunity a few weeks ago. I don’t mind gels – in fact, that’s primarily what I use (well that and mini pretzels). I tried chews for a while but then one day my stomach decided that it didn’t like them and that was that.
Let’s start with the basics – what are Science in Sport gels?
“The GO Isotonic Gel was the worlds first isotonic gel effectively delivering an easily digestible and quick supply of carbohydrate for energy during exercise. Isotonic Gels are designed to be consumed without water meaning that you can ensure rapid delivery of carbohydrate to your muscles without the feelings of being bloated that can sometimes occur with over-drinking”.
The thinner consistency of the gels is what really appealed to me. Sometimes thicker gels can be hard to digest on a run. To be brutally honest, the consistency was a little off-putting at first, primarily because I wasn’t used to it. By the second time I used the gel, I really enjoyed it! I was able to slowly take in the gels during a run and there was absolutely no need for water. Most importantly, absolutely no stomach issues!
What flavors are available?
With over 15 flavors, you’re bound to find one, or a few, that you enjoy. For this review I was given the following flavors to try:
Salted Strawberry – By far, this was my absolute favorite! Something about the salt and the sweet makes this gel so delicious. In addition, the salted strawberry is actually an energy gel that includes added electrolytes for energy + hydration benefits.
Double Espresso– This gel includes caffeine (150mg of caffeine in every gel). This flavor was a little sweet for me to take in during a run, but I actually tried it when I needed a little boost before a workout and it worked perfectly!
Apple – This was my second favorite flavor. Not too sweet but definitely had that refreshing apple taste.
Lemon & Mint – This flavor wasn’t horrible, but it was my least favorite. The lemon flavor was a little tart but I did enjoy the mint part of it.
I’m looking forward to continuing to use these gels for my Chicago Marathon training this summer.

I have tried these. I really like them. BUT…they’re too big to carry. I like to fuel every 4 miles during a race.
I agree that they are a little large!
No stomach issues is key! The thinner consistency is appealing too.
It definitely took some getting used to but I really do like it.
I haven’t used fuel in a race in a while, but really need to get back to it. I’ve hit a wall during the last 2 half marathons i completed (which is really frustrating because all my training runs were awesome).
Sometimes I can run a half with just water but I know I’ll need fuel a few times during the marathon.
I LOVED these when we got samples of them for RocknBlog last year. I used to be a die-hard GU fan, but no longer…they totally destroy my from the inside-out (and we’ll just leave it that). The SiS worked well, and I had no adverse after-effects.
I could never use GU which always frustrated me because they had the best flavors! Like you, GU and my tummy do not agree at all lol.
Knock on wood, so far I don’t have stomach issues (except that one half — but hey, it was a PR). My biggest thing is that i like to take in a little every mile, which is hard with gels (which is why I gave up on gels a long time ago).
What, no chocolate flavor? Mmm, salted chocolate . . .
They do have chocolate I just didn’t receive that from them to test out.
Oooh, I keep seeing these and the reviews all sound good. I would try the Salted Strawberry.
Yup, that’s the best one I’ve tried so far!
Sounds like some great flavor combos. I’ve never heard of salted strawberry! I’ve heard of salted watermelon and enjoy that flavor! My husband thinks it is so weird that me and my family put salt on watermelon. I told him other people do it to but he thinks it’s weird. Do you do it too?
Thanks for linking up with us ( and for your sweet comment on my post today). -M
The salted strawberry is so good, and I love that it doesn’t “taste like a gel”. IT’s not overly sweet or anything.
I don’t put salt on watermelon but I think I will try that – thanks for the suggestion!
Everyone does seem to love these maybe I should try them. The salted strawberry sounds good!
That’s my absolute favorite!
I received a bunch of these from RnR last year–I’ve used them and I like them. But I don’t see how they can replace water. I would use them for shorter distances.
I still run with water but I don’t have to drink water behind these gels like I did with other ones.
I may have to revisit these – I had a tough time with the consistency when I tried them. It’s great that they’ve been working so well for you!
I noticed that the consistency of the salted strawberry is a little smoother than the others so that’s probably why it’s my favorite.
I might have to give these a shot. The other times I tried gels, I wanted to hurl right after swallowing. It wasn’t the flavor. It just hit my stomach like a ton of bricks. Hopefully these work!
Definitely give them a try!
I can tolerate these just fine, which is useful when doing a race that supplies them on the route, but they are the largest packets and, because I’m OK with the thicker ones, I tend to go for Gu and Torq instead – more calories in a smaller pouch.
I do agree that I wish the size was a bit smaller!
