Happy Friday! Since it’s the last Friday of the month, I’m linking up with Marcia from Marcia’s Healthy Slice for Runfessions.
I’m also linking up for Friday Five 2.0 with Rachel from Running on Happy and Lacey and Meranda from Fairytales and Fitness.
Today is the last day of June and I’m still in disbelief. How are we already half-way into 2017? Seriously, where did the time go?! I feel like the holidays will be here before we know it! Overall June was a good month. I ran 3 races and completed 4 weeks of training for the Chicago Marathon. As with every month, I’ve got a few things to get off my chest.
I runfess that July is the month I drop some pounds
I feel like I’ve had this “drop 10 pounds” goal all year long. I keep getting caught in this stop/go process. I’ll do well for a while, drop like 3-4 pounds, and then gain it back. It’s super frustrating but I know that the real problem is me and my lack of commitment to sticking to good eating habits. I don’t understand why I’m super diligent about following a training plan, but can’t seem to get this under control. I’m going to really commit to meal prepping this month and I think that will make a huge difference.
I runfess that I miss lifting heavy
Don’t get me wrong, I think I do a good job at incorporating strength training into my marathon training schedule (2-3 times a week), but sometimes I miss lifting heavy. When I first started working out years ago I would use a lot of the weight machines in the gym. I think I would like to start doing that again, even if it’s only for 15 minutes a few days a week. Earlier this week I took two back to back strength classes and I LOVED IT! Sure, I know this can’t happen every week, and I was sore the day after, but I like that “feel the burn” feeling!
I runfess that active release therapy (ART) makes my body happy
Active Release Therapy (ART) makes my body REALLY happy! I have about 3-4 problems that I’m currently working through and ART helps every time. It’s not a walk in the park (often painful), but I end up leaving the office much better than when I arrived. Starting next month I’ll start going every week (right now I go every other week) to make sure my body survives marathon training in one piece 🙂
I runfess that I’ve been sleeping more than usual lately
Not sure if it’s the increase in workouts/running, or just life in general, but I’ve been sleeping more than usual. I’m typically good with 6-7 hours of sleep but the past few weeks I’ve been sleeping more like 8-10 hours, if you include naps. I think part of the reason might be my multivitamin, it’s probably time to make a change. If you have any recommendations for multivitamins for runners, please let me know!
I runfess that I’m getting back into Netflix
This year I haven’t been watching too much of anything on Netflix. That changed earlier this month when I binge watched the new season of Orange is the New Black over two days (whoops). Now I’m always searching for movies and documentaries to watch on there when I have free time. I’ve found some great things on there so far and it made me remember why I love the service so much. If you have any Netflix recommendations, let me know!
Do you have anything you want to runfess for June?
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
ART is not always fun but is so effective! I had a Rolfing session yesterday and she found some interesting spots in my low back and hips. Its not as painful as ART but definitely uncomfortable. We have to do what we can to avoid injuries, right?
kookyrunner says
ART is heaven sent, seriously! I always know that it’s going to hurt but I feel like the pain makes all my joints work better if that makes any sense? I’ve got a weird stabilizer thing going on in my back and it always feels liek a million bucks after my ART appointments!
Mer @ scootadoot says
I’ve been sleeping more than usual too with even a short nap thrown in during the day if it’s possible! I feel like I don’t always listen to my body when I’m tired and often deprive it of sleep in order to run/workout. I’m trying hard to listen to what it’s saying – I don’t want to sleep the day away or anything but adding an hour or two isn’t doing that, right?
kookyrunner says
You definitely have a point there. Even if I’m a little tired, I’ll still get my workout in,which may not always be the best thing!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Season 7 of Shameless is now on Netflix, so I’m all over that! Oh, those Gallaghers!
Ice cream? You know, I tried Halo Top and liked it, but nothing satisfies me like my boyfriends Ben and Jerry.
kookyrunner says
I’ve heard that Shameless is really funny so I’ll have to get into that! I agree with you that Halo Top is good, but Ben & Jerrys will always have a special place in my heart, lol 🙂
Zenaida Arroyo says
Sleeping more is the best. Your body craves it. At least mine does. 🙂 Before the school year was over I watched “How to Get Away with Murder” and got hooked. I also watched an episode of “Jane the Virgin” and found it to be very funny.
kookyrunner says
My body is definitely craving more sleep! I watch HTGAWM and love it, but I have never watched Jane the Virgin – thanks for that suggestion!
HoHo Runs says
I’ve been sleeping more lately and I’ve always been a BAD sleeper. I’m kinda loving it. I may have to check out ART. Surviving marathon training in one piece is definitely a big goal of mine!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I find healthy eating to be a challenge and I don’t know why I can’t as regimented with my diet as I am with training for races. I’m sure you’ll knock out those few pounds in July! I actually have hardly watched any TV this past month – I’ve just been too busy. I’d love to catch up on some shows and start a new series with my boyfriend.
ART sounds amazing…I wish I could get some sessions, it hurts so good!
kookyrunner says
Glad to know it’s not just me! It’s totally frustrating but I do know that when I’m pressed for time, I make bad choices so hopefully meal prepping will help a lot.
If you get a chance to do ART, I would highly recommend it!
Elle says
I have been fighting those few pounds too.. gaining and losing and gaining. I need to get serious! What food plan do you follow when you want to shed a few?
kookyrunner says
It’s so frustrating right?! I don’t necessarily follow a plan but I just try to eat a lot more veggies and protein
Chaitali says
I’ve never heard of ART before, I’ll have to look into that. And I’ve netflixed my way through lots of treadmill hours in the past couple years 🙂 I’m watching Hart of Dixie on there right now.
kookyrunner says
I wish I could watch Netflix on my treadmill, that would be great and help the time go by so much quicker!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I’ve done ART! It really helps me when I get PF! I’m glad it’s working for you!
kookyrunner says
That’s awesome to hear that ART worked for you as well!
Lesley says
I’m on quite a few vitamins, and I feel like it’s the first step of being a cliche old person. The walking pharmacy joke. I’m on Women’s One a Day for my multivitamin, Omega-3, B12, D3, and Biotin. Luckily a lot of these are chewables 🙂
kookyrunner says
Thats great that they are all chewable! I can take pills but the multivitamins always tend to be so large!!
Ana says
I am halfway through OITNB! and we are really enjoying it! I love watching random Friends episodes and I heard there is a documentary of a woman ultra marathon runner in Netflix, but I haven’t looked it up yet.
kookyrunner says
OITNB is a great series! I’ll have to check out that documentary that you mentioned!
Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
I’ve been wanting to lose a few pounds just so my clothes fit better. I finally bought my very first scale ever last night!
kookyrunner says
I have a scale but I try to only get on it once a week. If I do it more than that, I get too frustrated!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I could probably stand to lose 10 lbs, but I’d settle for 5. I’ve been pretty good, but at the moment, things are moving in the wrong direction anyway. I just have to keep the faith and continue to eat well.
Usually each summer my husband & I pick an older show to watch on Netflix, but he has a lot of movies he’s bought & wants to watch a movie every night. I’d rather watch a show or two, actually, most of the time, but haven’t come up with anything that has grabbed the both of us yet.
kookyrunner says
Thats a great idea about picking an older show/series to watch on Netflix. There are a few sitcoms that I could definitely start watching.
Rachel says
I take Rainbow Light Women’s Once Daily as a multi. It turns pee fluorescent yellow which is slightly alarming the first few times. But I like it because it’s plant-based and non-GMO. I also take iron, vitamin D, and B complex, but those are all on doctor’s orders so I wouldn’t recommend it unless you need them.
I’m lucky I don’t have Netflix anymore. Now I have Hulu which is easy to binge watch as well, but not as easy as Netflix!
kookyrunner says
Thanks for the vitamin recommendation – I’ll have to check them out!
Kimberly Hatting says
Netflix is awesome! WE watched Lost and Breaking Bad…total marathon watching with those
kookyrunner says
I’ve been meaning to watch Breaking Bad!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Haha that Maury picture is spot on. I too have been trying to work on losing weight, but my husband insists on having all of that unhealthy stuff in the house. Ugh!
kookyrunner says
Ugh – all the unhealthy stuff tastes so good, LOL.
The Accidental Marathoner says
I’m with you on the weight loss. Up and down and up and down all over again. I’m hoping with marathon training in full swing, those pesky 5 to 10 extra pounds will finally wave goodbye. I need to get back into strength training as well. It’s what I love best!
kookyrunner says
Last year I gained weight after marathon training and I haven’t been able to lose it yet. Like you, I’m hoping to drop a few pounds during this training cycle!
Mary says
The ART sounds like a great way to keep your body in one piece through marathon training. I have never tried it. Do you get it from a PT or some other kind of practitioner? I like lifting too though I probably will never again be lifting heavy (post back surgery). I guess it doesn’t go with marathon training, sprinters maybe.
kookyrunner says
I get ART from my PT. He specializes in other techniques as well.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
ART can be painful at times, but oh so effective! And I’m so with you on the “drop 10 pounds” on again off again progress!
kookyrunner says
For me, ART is a necessary evil, lol. I’m going to try to get serious about the whole weight loss thing this month….after the 4th of July of course lol
Coco says
July is not the month I’m losing weight – not this week anyway. Maybe after vacation. ART really can do wonders!
kookyrunner says
LOL I totally agree with you. I did pretty good this weekend, but will allow myself some goodies tomorrow and Tuesday 🙂
Toni says
I just want to maintain my weight, good luck with your weight loss. And uhhhh Netflix is a black hole……
kookyrunner says
Thank Toni. I’m hoping this is the month that everything finally clicks for me in regard to weight loss.
Jen @ SprinklesHikes says
A dose of B12 might be what you need… or it might be that your body really needs the rest! It’s always hard to say when you’re in a heavy training cycle. I haven’t been doing any ART, but I think my chiropractor does about the closest thing you can get to that in a small southern town. It’s amazing how much of a positive difference it can make on your body.
kookyrunner says
Thanks for the recommendation Jen! I have a doctor’s appointment for a physical in a few weeks so I will definitely talk to her about that!
Anna @ Pipers Run says
I too feel like this is the month or summer to really focus on losing some weight that I’ve gained. I still can’t believe is July!
kookyrunner says
I hope we’re both successful with our weight loss goals this month!
