It’s October! I can hardly believe it, but I’m so excited! To me this month means all things pumpkin, cool weather, leaves changing and apple picking. It’s definitely a fun month, but that doesn’t mean I’ll slack off on my fitness goals!
Do you set monthly goals? I love doing these posts every month because it helps to hold me accountable, especially with my yearly goals. Sometimes it’s easy to get a little lazy with all of the day-to-day responsibilities that we have, but I always try to make my health a top priority.
First, let’s take a look at my goals from August:
Do PT exercises daily
Grade: B
I didn’t do them every day (about 4x a week), but I will be doing them daily in October!
Plan another racecation
Grade: A
I planned an additional racecation for Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio. I’m super excited as I’ve never been to Texas before.
Will I see you there? If you’re interested in running, you can save $15 off the half marathon or marathon distance with code RNRRNB2018.
Read a running related book
Grade: C
I got half way through a book and will finish it this month.
Here are my goals for October!
Complete my StepBet Game
I first found out about StepBet in August. What is StepBet? From their website:
“It’s a fitness game that motivates you to be more active. Players “bet” on themselves to meet their personalized step goals during every week of the game, and win money if they do. The cash prize, accountability, and community support help you build a more active lifestyle.”
It’s pretty cool because it uses data from your fitness tracker (Fitbit, Apple Watch or Garmin) to calculate your active and stretch goals. The game lasts for 6 weeks and there is a “No Lose Guarantee”, so if you hit your 4 active and 2 stretch days every week, you get your money back + you “split the pot”. You end up splitting the pot of the funds from people who did not hit their goals. It’s definite motivation for me to keep moving and stay active daily because I don’t want to lose the $40 that I paid into the game! If anything, I’ll at least get my money back!
Do 30 mins of lunchtime activity
Getting in some movement during the workday is important for me because I sit all day. I’m also sure this is part of the blame for my unhappy hip as well. While I try to get up every hour to grab some water, walk around, use the restroom, etc, I still want to do more movement. My job offers yoga (Mondays) and bootcamp (Wednesdays) during lunch and I’ll take advantage of those when I can. If not, I’ll aim to get in a walk. I do have some more travel this month so I won’t have my daily routine every day, but I’ll still try to make this happen. This will also help with my StepBet goal as well. Here’s a photo from my walk yesterday.
Continue hip rehab
Well not really rehab, but I want to continue doing everything I can to help my hip. This week I started doing 20-30 mins of PT exercises daily and I’m going to continue doing that all this month. While I’ll still be running 3x week, my weekly runs will be between 3-5 miles with a “long run” on the weekends. I have to half marathons this month and will be using run/walk intervals to complete them.
Did you have a good September? If you set monthly goals, what are your goals for October?

I used to love DietBet, but StepBet never works for me. It’s sad because I wanted it to . I hear there’s a new running one too
kookyrunner says
Oh wow I haven’t heard about the running one – I’ll have to check that out.
I never tried DietBet
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I never heard of Stepbet but it looks interesting! I definitely want to do more walking and try to take the pressure off because I’m still not ready to get back to running. I hope you have a great time in San Antonio!
kookyrunner says
StepBet is very interesting so far and I’ll do a post about my experience in November.
Laurie says
You and I are both doing hip rehab. Ugh! I am not signing up for any more races until I get my hip under control, but San Antonio sounds awesome. It’s a race I would love to do. Have fun!!!
kookyrunner says
You are smart. I signed up for 2 more races while dealing with this injury, but they are both in 2019 so I should be fine!
Kimberly Hatting says
That sounds like an interesting game/challenge! I can definitely see where an active person can pretty easily coast on through, but it could be a great challenge for the lesser-active peeps to stay active on the daily.
kookyrunner says
Well it calculates your active and power days based on your average steps with Fitbit so it’s really customized. It’s going to force me to be more active at least one day of the week to hit my “power” goal.
Debbie says
Great job on reaching most of your goals. Especially keeping up your rehab exercises. That’s so important. I’ll be interested to hear about your step bet experience. It sounds interesting.
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Debbie. I’ll probably do a post in November about StepBet once I complete it.
Jenny Albertson says
I’m just coming off a knee injury so my biggest goal in October is to run when I can and walk when my body tells me I need to!
kookyrunner says
Yup! Sounds like my plan as well.
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
I used to be so good at reading but I have really slacked. Would love to get back to it. Now to find the time!
kookyrunner says
Same! When I was a kid I would read all the time. I wish I could get back to that.
Jenn says
You did really well with your goals!
I need another racecation stat! I am running a race in California soon, but it’s not really a racecation at all. It will still be fun, though!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Jenn!
Running in California is so much fun! It’s just a totally different vibe out there.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Nice job with your goals. I would love to get another racecation in – San Antonia should be a lot of fun! Hope your hip keeps improving!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle! I’m looking forward to San Antonio.
Marcia says
StepBet sounds cool! Can’t wait to see how you do with it. RnR San Antonio will be SO fun!
kookyrunner says
I’m liking the StepBet challenge so far – it gives me incentive to move a little bit more everyday.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Sounds like great goals, Kim! I’m doing some prehab exercises too, but it’s so hard to do them daily. I actually want to get up to more than once a day — these probably take only 5 minutes or so — but that’s a pretty ambitious goal, even though I know it will help.
San Antonio is a really fun place! Just be prepared for some heat & humidity. 🙂
kookyrunner says
Thanks Judy! One thing that has helped me is doing my PT exercises when I wake up and getting them done before leaving for work. When I do the whole routine it takes about 25-30 minutes.
chaitali says
That a great idea to add activity to your work day 🙂 I’m in a job where I sit all day too and I definitely feel better on those days when I make an effort to remember to get up and move around throughout the day. I’ve been trying to add afternoon walks also and they’ve definitely helped.
kookyrunner says
I can tell the difference in my energy levels when I get in some activity mid-day, it’s great!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
I don’t typically set monthly goals, but I love that you do! I bet that gives you something to hold yourself accountable to. Right now, my goal would simply be to finish marathon training and get healthier since I’ve been sick for the last 6 weeks off and on :-/
kookyrunner says
Oh no 🙁 I’m so sorry that you’ve been sick the past few weeks. I hope that you start to feel better soon.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Have fun at Rock ‘N’ Roll San Antonio! I’ve never been to Texas either. I hope your hip heals quickly and quits giving you such a hassle.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Debbie. I was able to do two runs this week with no pain so I’m hopeful that it’s getting better.
Wendy says
I’ve never heard of StepBet but it sounds like an excellent motivator! I’ll have to check it out–any way I can get my patients moving…
I hope your hip is improving!
kookyrunner says
It’s a really good motivator! It forces me to do a little more activity every day and that’s never a bad thing!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
San Antonio should be a good place for a racecation! I went there a few years ago. I hope you see improvements with you hip from all the PT!
kookyrunner says
Yes it looks like a fun city, plus I’ve never been to Texas before.
Zenaida says
I’ve never heard of StepBet. Must check it out! Have fun at RnR San Antonio.
