Happy Tuesday! It’s time for another edition of Tuesday Topics. This week we have a fun topic for you! This week’s Tuesday Topic: What are your running/racing pet peeves? You can write about this or any running related blog post. Remember to Link-up with Kim and Zenaida and the bottom of this post!
I’m usually a half glass full type of gal, but when it comes to running, there are quite a few things that really get on my nerves! Here are a few of my running and racing pet peeves.
Running Pet Peeves
– When runners don’t acknowledge other runners
I’ve talked about this on my blog before but I hate when runners don’t acknowledge other runners. I also either wave, say hello or give a head nod/smile when I see other runners during my runs. Half of the time I get no acknowledgment back. Seriously, how hard is it to be kind?
– Snot rockets
No. Just no. This is so gross!
– When runners always ask about pace
When I first started running there was one woman at my local running store that would always ask people about their pace. It was super annoying because you could tell she just wanted to brag about how fast she was. It got to the point where I just avoided her every time I saw her. I think she eventually got the hint.
Racing Pet Peeves
– When races start late
We already have to wake up early, and in some cases, travel to the race. Also the later we start, the hotter it gets out there on the course. Also I just hate waiting in the corrals longer than I have too!
– When runners suddenly stop
I have no issue with stopping to walk during a race, I certainly do it. But I hate when runners just stop with no warning. One time I actually ran into someone that did this and I was sure to give her a piece of my mind. Luckily neither one of us were hurt.
– When runners run more than 2 people across
Not only is this just rude, but it’s also dangerous.
– When runners listen to their music without headphones
I’ve actually noticed this more this year and I’m still so confused by it. What on Earth would make someone do this? It’s super annoying and rude.
Tell me: What are some of your running/racing pet peeves?

I agree with everything you’ve mentioned. I respect that for a lot of runners, it may be their first experience in a race…but what about common sense or simple awareness of those around us? I doubt they would abruptly stop their car or make a quick turn without looking over their shoulder…why not apply those same principles to running or racing? A co-worker started going to a running club (several years ago), and always made a point to tell me about all of her weekend runs…and name-dropped the running club’s name every-other sentence. She still does it! That was annoying, back then, and still is now LOL
kookyrunner says
Ugh I just hate people that brag about stuff like that. Don’t they realize that literally no one cares?! lol
Wendy says
Everything you mentioned! And having run a race over the weekend, I’d add people lining up where they shouldn’t! I don’t understand why a slower runner/walker would want to be up front in the stampede?
kookyrunner says
That’s so true! I’ve seen this A LOT at Rock n Roll races.
Marcia says
I swear Wisconsin in the snot rocket capital of the world. While I did not see anyone actually doing them at ZOOMA Great Lakes, I kept seeing the snot on the ground at regular intervals. It is so gross. The people who are overly curious or obsessed about pace are annoying as well. Thanks for the linkup!
kookyrunner says
Yuck! I will never understand the snot rockets – so gross!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I have many of the same peeves, and I’ve written about them before — so I tried to come up with new ones! I think we probably have an endless supply. 🙂
I too hate when runners hog the road in a race.
I suspect that people who run without headphones either a) don’t like the way they feel or b) don’t want to “ruin” their ears. Sometimes I like the music, and since I don’t run with any, that can be kind of cool.
OTOH, I like the peace & quiet that running gives me. I don’t want to listen to your music (or your conversation on the phone, thankyouverymuch.
kookyrunner says
LOL yes! It seems like every year I can think of new pet peeves. Either I’m losing patience or people are just more rude.
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
Everything you mentioned yes! For races I would add, when they run out of water mid race or medals at the finish. They know how many people are registered plan accordingly.
kookyrunner says
Totally agree with that too! While I’ve always received race medals, there have been a few times where they have run out of food and that really ticked me off.
Darlene says
I agree with all.
I didn’t post because I’m sure that I don’t haven’t anything new to add.
But I just thought of a few:
when the course is not marked well.
When the course is long
when the course is labelled as flat and it is hilly
when there is not sufficient parking
kookyrunner says
Ahh that’s a good one! I have run a few long courses and that’s definitely not fun, especially when it’s a half marathon.
Denise @runheartfit says
OMG I totally agree with all of them but particularly the people who stop suddenly in the middle of the road…seriously, did they think there was no one else in the race? And the people who play their music without headphones! So presumptuous that other people want to hear or like their music. So annoying!
kookyrunner says
The sudden stopping drives me crazy! Seriously how hard is it to go over to the right side of the road and put your hand up to indicate you are stopping?
Chaitali says
Oh man, the listening to music without headphones thing is so weird. I’ve been noticing it more and more too.
kookyrunner says
Right?! I don’t know why this is now a thing but it’s super annoying.
San says
My biggest pet peeve lately is cars turning right at a red light or rolling through a stop sign without yielding to runners. Drives me bonkers.
kookyrunner says
That would definitely drive me crazy as well. I just wish drivers would pay more attention when they are driving!
Rachel says
OMG my running pet peeve is when people hock loogies. Or however you spell that nastiness. It grosses me WAY beyond anything imaginable.
And I totally agree with the music sans headphones. I admit I’ve done it a time or two when I’m running a training run ALONE and I get bored, but never ever ever ever in a race. I just find it so rude to other runners around.
kookyrunner says
Ugh that is just so gross! Even the sound of it grosses me out.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
In complete agreement with you on all of these!
It also drives me crazy when races don’t have enough water stops or they’re poorly managed. Or, when the course is open and there are not enough volunteers to keep the runners safe (BTDT – not fun!)
kookyrunner says
Yes to the open course! I’ve experienced this more than once unfortunately. Needless to say, those races were one and done for me.
Zenaida Arroyo says
We share many of the same pet peeves! I will admit that sometimes I do not acknowledge other runners. Oops.
kookyrunner says
But I’m sure if someone said Hi to you or waved you would acknowledge them. Some runners can’t even be bothered to do that!
Kaila says
Biggest running pet peeve is when you wave/acknowledge another runner and they totally ignore! It’s just common courtesy ya know??
kookyrunner says
Same! I find it to be so rude, especially if I know that they saw me!
Cari says
The music without headphones thing is so annoying! Especially in the otherwise peaceful serenity of the Park. It’s like when a car is beside you at a light. No one wants to hear your craptacular music, dude. And yes, almost always a dude.
And yes on starting late. I can deal with the long time to cross the start, but not when it starts late overall
kookyrunner says
YES! Especially in a park. I mean there are how many different brands of headphones available? Just buy a pair!
