Happy Sunday! I hope that you had a great week. This week was nice because I was off work, got to spend some time with my best friend and ran a race yesterday.
Here’s how my workouts went this week:
Monday, April 1
3.6 mile run.
I got in a great run for my birthday. Happy to celebrate another year older and another year wiser 🙂
Tuesday, April 2
Spinning (30 minutes) + Strength Training for Runners (30 minutes) + tons of walking in NYC.
I needed to mix things up since I knew I had a full day of walking ahead of me. Spinning and strength training for the win!
My best friend, her son and her mom were visiting NYC for a few days so I tagged along to help them get around the city. On this day we went to lunch, then visited Ripley’s Believe It Or Not and Madame Tussauds. After that we walked over to the NBA store. Here are a few photos:
Wednesday, April 3
Strength Training for Runners (20 minutes) + tons of walking in NYC.
Day 2 of NYC adventures! We visited the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, FAO Schwartz and the Nintendo store followed by dinner.
Thursday, April 4
2 mile run + Interval & Arms Spinning Class (30 minutes).
After doing a lot of walking in NYC, my left foot was REALLY cranky. I decided to just get in a short run and take a cycling class to get the legs moving without putting too much stress on my foot.
Friday, April 5
Rest Day!
We traveled to Philly to hit up the Expo for the Hot Chocolate 15K race. It was a very small expo so we were in and out within 10 minutes. Finding something to eat for dinner was a bit of a challenge since I don’t eat mat on Fridays during Lent and I also gave up pizza for Lent. I finally found a place where I could get pasta.
Saturday, April 6
Hot Chocolate 15K
I finally ran my first official race of 2019! Overall the race felt harder than I thought it should. I definitely think I trained enough, especially with my long runs on the weekends. My nutrition wasn’t the best this week so I think that had something to do with the race feeling hard too. I clocked 9.4 mile so I think the course ran a little long.
Sunday, April 7
Rest Day.
Well now I know why yesterday’s race felt off, I’m sick. I checked my Fitbit and it my heart rate was in the peak zone for 97% of the run. I knew that looked way off so I compared it to other runs and I was right. My body was working overtime yesterday just to get my through that race.
I just have a cold so today has consisted of breakfast, watching TV, taking cold medicine and then a nap. I’ll have some soup later on today too.
Total Weekly Mileage: 15 miles
Summary: 3 runs, 2 spinning classes and 2 strength training workouts
Grade This Week – B+
I wasn’t really happy with my race performance yesterday so I’m going to adjust a few things over the next few weeks so that I can have a better race in Delaware at the end of the month. One thing I really want to hone in on is my nutrition as it’s been kind of all over the place lately. Granted I was sick yesterday but I still want to make some changes
This week I’ve been participating in the #SpringIntoNOW challenge and it’s been really cool! Not only do I get to test out a bunch of NOW Foods products, I also love seeing posts from all the other SweatPink members participating in the challenge. It’s not too late to join the challenge and enter for your chance to win a $200 gift card for NOW Foods products!
I enjoyed having this week off work for a staycation. Although it was a busy week and I didn’t get too much relaxation, I was happy to sleep in a few days and not have to worry about projects!
That’s it! I hope you had a great week 🙂
I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

Oh, Kim, you didn’t have to go and get yourself sick just because I was LOL (I do appreciate the gesture, though). Hope your symptoms feel better soon! I love that medal for your chocolate race! AS always, thanks for linking with us 🙂
kookyrunner says
LOL 🙂 Hopefully the both of us will be back to feeling good soon.
Wendy says
It seems like everyone is sick lately! I’ve been super busy seeing sick kiddos at work. Come on spring, push winter out the door!!
I’m glad you were able to run your race in spite of not feeling well. That is a fun one!
kookyrunner says
Right?! I think the change in the weather has something to do with it too. Oh well, hopefully it will be a short lived sickness.
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
I’m glad the week started well with a birthday run even though you ended it sick. Kudos to still racing even in spite of not feeling the best. Rest up – soup later sounds great!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Becca! I’m feeling better and had some soup for dinner so I’m on the road to feeling better.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I’m so sorry that you were sick on your birthday week (see how I extended it the whole week?). And for the race. That always sucks.
You sure packed in an awful lot in NYC in 2 days!
Feel better, Kim.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Judy. I’m already starting to feel better I’m just going to keep drinking lots of fluids and taking medicine. I’m hoping it’s a very short lived illness!
NYC was so much fun but I’m not used to doing that much walking lol
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
Ok so no one wants to buy themselves their own coffee on their birthday! I wish you still had some leeway with that as well. Philly looks like so much fun! A little warm for hot chocolate though. Also love the jacket swag. congrats to you and your mom!
kookyrunner says
Philly was fun but it was freezing in the morning! When I packed my suitcase the weather was showing as 50 degrees in the morning but it ended up being more like 33, so I was definitely underdressed. Luckily it did warm up as the morning went on!
Marcia says
Ugh I can imagine how hard that race felt if you were coming down with something. Cute medal and swag though! How fun to play tourist in NYC! I agree with you about the birthday coffee. Starbucks has gotten pretty petty with that.
kookyrunner says
I was trying to figure out why the race felt so hard so it was good to look at my Fitbit today and get some answers. I’m already starting to feel better than I did this morning so hopefully it’s a very short lived cold!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Sounds like a great trip of sightseeing! Fun week off work. Sorry that you were feeling sick at the end. Oh yeah, I am totally irked by the birthday Starbucks drink. They should at least give you a week!
kookyrunner says
Right?! I don’t understand why they shortened the time we have to redeem the free reward – it’s so odd!
Jessie says
Ugh, sorry to hear that you’re sick! I hope you recover quickly…It seems like a lot of people are getting sick this past week!
Glad you still managed to have a nice birthday- belated Happy Birthday!
kookyrunner says
Yup, it’s just that time of the year I guess! I’m already feeling better so that’s good!
Thanks for the birthday wishes 🙂
Coco says
Oh, gosh, so sorry you’re sick. Interesting that your heart rate reflected that, but you had a pretty good race despite all that. I should look at my Garmin data more frequently. I hope you had a great birthday and fun in NYC. I find the wax museum fascinating and creepy!
kookyrunner says
Yeah it was weird to see that on my Fitbit but after accessing how I felt yesterday, it started to make more sense to me.
Renée says
Ah no, Kim! So sorry you are sick! That would actually explain a lot with your race. I do think it’s hard when you are doing a lot before race day, including eating and drinking things that you may not normally do if you were just at home. Seems to me that some people do well just eating/drinking whatever and then there are those of us if it’s just barely off it can kind of mess up our run!
I think with the week you had, especially being a serious tourist, you deserve a higher grade!
I hope you feel better real soon!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Renee! It was bound to happen as I didn’t get sick all Winter so I guess it was my time, lol. I’m already feeling better, thank goodness!
Liz Dexter says
Yay birthday run and also I LOVE that medal, so cool! Sorry you were sick but at least it gave you the reason for feeling off in the race (and of course it measured long, when you weren’t exactly feeling it!!). Hope you feel better soon.
kookyrunner says
Thanks Liz! I’m starting to feel better so I am hopeful this cold will be gone by the middle of the week.
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Congrats on Hot Chocolate! I’m sorry you’re under the weather but hopefully you’ll have some time to recover! Sometimes traveling can make me sick, I wonder if that’s what happened since you were so busy?
OK I’m kind of in love with Prince Harry LOL. I would have loved to “meet” him at Madame Tussaud’s!
kookyrunner says
Yeah I’m sure I picked up something on the trains in NYC or the Amtrak train back home – ahh the joys of traveling, lol!
Prince Harry seems like he would be so fun to hang out with!
Darlene says
I just missed you in NYC. I was there on Sat. You did a lot of fun things. Not hard in NYC.
Too bad about being sick 🙁
Belated happy birthday.
I will be traveling home from Florida on my birthday. Don’t think I will be able to get my bday Starbucks. Boo!
I will run my first Hot Chocolate 15k on April 27. Can’t wait to reqad your recap.
kookyrunner says
NYC is always a fun time, I’m just not used to walking that much anymore, lol
Thanks so much for the birthday wishes!
Allie says
I was sick on and off all week and almost didn’t run on Sunday. I’m sorry that happened to you but at least you know WHY you were so off! I’m sure your next race will be better.
That rodent tea party is insane!? WTH??? And I love the wax museum figures but they are also kinda creepy – LOL.
Happy belated Birthday and I hope you are recovering from being sick!
kookyrunner says
The rodent tea party made me laugh out loud!! Some of the wax figures weren’t that great to be honest but the good ones were REALLY spot on!
Chaitali says
Sounded like a good week until the weekend. Sorry that you’re sick but hopefully you’re on the way to feeling better!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Chaitali!
Jenn says
Ugh. I’m so sorry you came down with something, and that it had such a negative effect on your race. That’s super annoying and I hope you are feeling better.
That being said, any visit to NYC is a great one. I miss it terribly, and am hoping to get in a trip with little man soon!
kookyrunner says
Totally agree about NYC – you can’t go wrong with doing anything there!
Sandra D Laflamme says
Congrats on the Hot Chocolate 15K even if it wasn’t your best run! Seems like a fund one that I would love to do some year! I am doing the Spring Into Now Challenge too. Loving all of the fun products!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Sandra! It was a great race with fun swag despite the fact that I wasn’t feeling 100%.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Yay for the first race of 2019! And what great swag! I’ll have to put this race on my list for the future.
So sorry you’re sick 🙁 Hopefully some extra rest today will help you kick this thing to the curb quick! Feel better!
kookyrunner says
The race swag is always so good!
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
Oh man! I hope you feel better! Such a bummer you were sick for your first race of the season.
kookyrunner says
Thanks – I’m starting to feel better!
Cari says
You know that old cliche of you never see what’s in your back yard? Other than the Statue I haven’t done any of what you did – and Ripley/MTs are between my office and the gym.
Feel better!
kookyrunner says
Same for me! That was my first time doing all of those things in NYC. I never play tourist!
Cari says
I do to some extent, but not those somehow
Shathiso says
I would run for chocolate any day! Well done on your race even if as you later found out you weren’t feeling 100%. I’ve struggled a bit with nutrition the last few weeks and I’m also thinking I need to get back on track before my Half in May. Hope you’ve started feeling better this week. Colds always leave one so drained, uurrggh!
kookyrunner says
I feel like I always do great with nutrition, then fall off the wagon, then get back on the wagon – it’s such a struggle!
Angela Cardamone @marathonsandmotivation.com says
I have been struggling with a cold for the past week too, ugh! I’m glad you were able to do your race, it sounds like a fun one!!
kookyrunner says
Thanks Angela. I hope that you feel better soon!
