Happy Tuesday! It’s time for another edition of Tuesday Topics.bThis week’s Tuesday Topic: What are your favorite running movies? You can write about this or any running related blog post. Remember to Link-up with Kim and Zenaida and the bottom of this post!
I have to admit that as I’ve gotten older, I watch movies less. I used to go to the movies almost every weekend years ago but now I probably go to see a new movie once or twice a year. I’m much more of a Netflix/Amazon Video/Redbox rental type of gal, lol. That being said, there are a few running movies that I love.
Forrest Gump
This is my favorite movie of all time. I’ve lost count how many times I have watched it. When I was in Chicago a few years ago I went to the Navy Pier and they have a Bubba Gump restaurant there. The waiter asked me 10 trivia questions about the movie and I answered them all correctly. I guess you could say I’m a superfine of the movie, lol.
Okay, so technically this isn’t a “running” movie, but one of the big stories within the movie is how Forrest Gump ran across the country. That whole storyline is all about perseverance which is one theme I think everyone love.
The Human Race
I watched this movie earlier this year and really enjoyed it. It’s a documentary that focuses on six runners, all over the age of 50, that are pursuing their running dreams, including training for huge races.
Spirit of the Marathon
This movie chronicles various runners journeys to the Chicago Marathon. The runners ranged from newbies to seasoned runners so it was nice to see how each journey was different. Of course I really related to this movie since it was all about the Chicago Marathon (I watched it for the first time before I ran the race in 2017).
From Fat to Finish Line
While I don’t like the title of this movie, I’m a huge fan of all the inspirational stories featured in the film. And as someone that wants to ultimately run a Ragnar race, this film really spoke to me.
Tell me: What are your favorite running movies?

I love movies! It makes me sad that I don’t get to them in the theaters much any more — I want to, actually! Just busy.
I used to watch Spirit of the Marathon before every half. Even though I’ve never run a marathon, I love that movie!
I also like: McFarland, USA, Race, and Secretariat — I know, the last is about horse racing, but trust me, it’s really inspiring! Also The Rookie (with Dennis Quaid) — also not about running, but very inspiring.

Same here, I’m busy and also the price for movies now is just crazy! I would hate to spend that much money and then not like the movie.
Thanks for the other running movie recommendations!

Forrest Gump is one of our all-time favorites, too! We watch it almost every year either at Thanksgiving or Christmas (usually both LOL) when the kids are all home (they actually like it, too). I saw Spirit of the Marathon several years ago, and I thought it was great! I think there’s a sequel to it, but I haven’t seen that yet. Ragnar? Yes, we need to make that happen!!!!!
kookyrunner says
It’s just such a good movie and Tom Hanks is incredible, as always!
I think there is a sequel to Spirit of the Marathon but I haven’t watched it yet.
Darlene says
Forrest Gump is one of all time favorites. That reminds me I better watch Spirit of the Marathon before my race. I bought and never watched it.
kookyrunner says
Yes! Definitely watch that before NYCM next weekend 🙂

I really like Run, Fat Boy, Run, especially as the London Marathon features. It’s really funny and has a gross blister that I managed to replicate when I WALKED a marathon, pleased to have a handy reference point in that film. I think I watched it after I ran my first half, or in training.

I’ll have to check out that move. You’re the second person to mention that movie to me this month.
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
I loved the human race too! I have to check out from fat to finish line. I too, wish that they had chosen an alternate title
kookyrunner says
Yeah the movie title on that one really turns me off, but the movie was really good!
Jenn says
I never really thought of Forrest Gump as a running movie, maybe because he’s just so casual about it. However, it’s a great film and the running is a bonus.
I couldn’t get into From Fat To Finish Line. I tried a few times, just because it sounded great and the race was through my old neck of the woods, but ended up getting distracted. I will have to try again.
kookyrunner says
So true – running seemed to come so easy to him, lol.
Jackie says
I love McFarland! It is awesome and motivating.
kookyrunner says
i will have to watch that movie this weekend!

I love Forrest Gump! There was a movie a couple years ago about a cross country team in a poor part of central CA but I can’t think of the name at the moment. As a former cross country coach I really loved it.

I think I know the movie you’re speaking about! A few other runners have mentioned it in their blog posts.

I rarely go to the movie theater too but do enjoy going there once in a while. This year I took my mom a few times and we had a good time. I never thought Forrest Gump as a running movie but I do love that running scene.
kookyrunner says
I love the running scene in that movie – so inspirational!
Zenaida Arroyo says
The movie is McFarland USA.

I’ve only seen Forrest Gump. And there was Chariots of Fire when I was in high school. :-0

I’ve actually never seen Chariots of Fire which is absurd since it’s a classic. I need to fix this lol.

Love Forrest Gump – such a classic! Have you seen “Brittany Runs a Marathon”? It was a really cute movie. I loved that it was a true story.
