Hacks to save money
This is probably one of the easiest running hacks to do, and there are a few ways to accomplish this.
– You can shop at discount stores like Marshalls and TJ Maxx. They often sell running clothes and accessories by well known brands for a fraction of the price.
– You can also shop off season (right now would be a great time to purchase Winter running items).
– As you all know, most of my workout gear comes from Old Navy. One way I save money is by using my Old Navy credit card for those purchases. Not only do I get special discount codes, but I also get rewards based one the amount of money I spend. Basically the moral of the story is to never pay full price for running clothing or accessories!
Hacks for organization
While I am a morning person, I never hesitate to make things easier for myself when running, especially for those early morning runs.
– For years I’ve laid out all of my running necessities for these runs – clothes, socks, sneakers, headband or hat, sunglasses etc. Not only does it save time in the morning, but it also ensures that I don’t forget anything.
– I also keep an emergency running kit in my car that contains wet wipes, chapstick, a hair elastic and a few other items. In the off chance I forget something, it’s nice to have that backup option.
– I’m also a huge fan of using ziplock bags for organization. I have separate ziplock bags for my pain reliever items (KT tape, Tiger Balm, etc), another bag for my running fuel (gels, etc) and a third bag for post-run food (protein powder packets, etc). This system works well and helps me know exactly what I have on hand.

Putting out workout clothes especially for those morning runs is just the best. It probably doesn’t save that much time but it certainly feels like it and helps to kick you out the door! We don’t have real discount stores in Botswana but in South Africa I’ve heard there are a few and you can get such good deals. I agree, paying full price for some of these items is crazy!
kookyrunner says
Totally agree. The less thinking I have to do early in the morning, the better!

Very good tips! I have learnt a few years ago that paying the full price for running gear is a total waste of money. I usually order it online at a discount or wait for the sales in the stores.
Also, I take old race T-shirts that I don’t like with me on holidays and then throw them away before I go home.
kookyrunner says
That’s a great idea about the race shirts, and it allows more space in your suitcase to bring back new clothing 🙂
Kimberly Hatting says
I’m with you on not paying full price. Just don’t see the value in it (pun intended). As you know, I’m also an ON advocate 😉 As for laying out the gear the night before…that is such a no-brainer and huge stress-reliever. I’m always amazed at the peeps who haven’t caught on to that LOL
kookyrunner says
I’m always amazed at how affordable ON clothing is, AND that is lasts forever!
Wendy says
I read once somewhere that some people sleep in their running clothes, lol! I wouldn’t go to that extreme, but I do lay out my clothes the night before an early morning run. I just can’t think that much in the morning.
kookyrunner says
I read that too, but I’m not that hardcore, lol
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
My best clothes hack is keeping all of my workout clothes in our workout room. I’ve got some Old Navy leggings that were not only cheap to start with but I’ve had them for so long and they show no signs of wear. Costco sometimes has sports bras and leggings for very cheap, and I’ve had good luck with getting some more expensive items on ThredUp for very cheap.

I am amazed at how long my Old Navy athletic gear lasts! I’ve had some items for over 5 years and they are still in great condition.
I’ve never checked Costco for sports bras – thanks for the tip!

I always lay out clothes the night before — except sometimes in Winter, because I know I’ll be running later.
At the beginning of the month, when it was cool, I wasn’t doing it because I knew I’d be running later. Then I wasted so much time trying to find the things I wanted!
kookyrunner says
I’m always amazed at how much time I save in the morning when I lay out my clothes.

Never pay full price (except running shoes) is my motto. I cut off knee socks and use for arm sleeves. I wear dollar store gloves too.
I’m like you. I have all my clothes ready in the am.
When I worked, I packed them the night before. I also keep extra stuff at work and in my trunk. No excuses.
kookyrunner says
Yup, totally agree – the only thing I don’t mind paying full price for are running sneakers 🙂
Love the idea of cutting off knew socks to make arm warmers!
Zenaida Arroyo says
I don’t own any Old Navy gear but now I feel like I should take a look at it. I am definitely missing out! We have some of the similar hacks. Great minds think alike! 🙂
kookyrunner says
Totally check them out! They always have great sales too.
Deborah Brooks says
Race morning I always lay out my clothes. Other days, I admittedly try on a few outfits before getting out there. Everything is on sale now so no need to pay full price on anything! Good time to stock up on stuff we need for summer
kookyrunner says
Very true! Every day my inbox is full of emails from different brands about all of their sales. I don’t really NEED anything right now so I fight the urge to buy lol.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
I lay everything out the night before as well – it makes the morning so much less stressful and easier to get out the door. I like the idea of having backup supplies and gear in your car!
Hope you’re having a great week!
kookyrunner says
One of my friends gave me the idea about having backup supplies in my car and I thought it was genius!
San says
Great tips, Kim. I also shop a lot at Old Navy for running gear. You just can’t beat the prices and the quality is pretty good.
kookyrunner says
Agreed! And I love the quality of their clothing too.
