Happy Tuesday! It’s time for another edition of Tuesday Topics. This week’s Tuesday Topic: What is your word for 2021! You can write about this or any running related blog post. Remember to link-up with Kim and Zenaida and the bottom of this post!
This is the first time I’ve picked a word for the year. I’ve always thought about doing this but never followed through on it. It took me a few days to think of my word for this year. I narrowed it down to three options but finally decided on RESET.
According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of reset is ‘to set again or anew’. After surviving 2020, I think that we’re all in need of a little reset. This is how I’ll be applying the word this year.
Reset in my fitness journey
Luckily I haven’t struggled with consistency when it comes to my workouts, primarily because it’s one of the few things that has kept me sane and functional throughout the pandemic. Something I can work on is a reset on my approach to fitness. One thing I’m changing? Saying I don’t have enough time to stretch. That’s just not true so I will be getting in pre and post workout stretches regularly. I’ll also be working on the ‘less is more’ mindset. You know I absolutely love Peloton, but I’m sure there are times I do too many workouts for my ‘stack’. I never, ever workout to the point of exhaustion, but I can add in more active recovery type workouts. I know that will be beneficial, but this will be a work in progress throughout the year.
Reset in my personal life
I don’t discuss my personal life too much on this blog too much, but for those that don’t know I was married in my 20s for a few years. Yesterday was actually the 10 year anniversary of my divorce (I celebrate it every year, lol). I’ve had one serious relationship since then that ended years ago and I haven’t dated much since then. I’ve tried a few dating apps, but haven’t had much luck. Over the weekend I deleted my dating app profile because I want – you guessed it – a reset. I’m going to take all new photos this week and try joining a few ‘new to me’ dating apps. I want to make a real effort to put myself out there more – I’m not getting any younger! I also want to reset my mindset. I think that it was quite easy to feel down or get in a negative mindset last year. Current events didn’t magically disappear or get better once 2021 started, but what I can fix is how I handle all the craziness. Adopting a more positive mindset is a reset that I know will be 100% beneficial.
Reset at work
The last 3-4 months at my job have been…interesting (I’ll just leave it at that). I feel like a lot is very unknown right now, but I do know that things will change and reset once we get a new leader for my team. I’m not sure if we will totally need to revamp programs or start over from scratch based on the new vision for the team but it will definitely be interesting this year!

Catrina says
What I great word for 2021, Kim!
I used to think the same about stretching – but now that I’m going on for 53 I feel that daily stretching and foam rolling is very beneficial.
I didn’t know you were married. I wholeheartedly support your idea of a fresh start on the dating apps. It takes courage to put yourself out there and I’m sure you will be successful. All the very best with this reset, Kim!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much for the kind words Catrina – I really appreciate it!
Wendy says
Reset is such a good word–so many of us have had to make adjustments and shift our focus and training. I started my reset last year, spending a lot more time on the trails. It’s been a fun ride and I wonder if it would have happened otherwise!!
I keep saying that I don’t have a word for 2021 but if I did, it would be STRONG. On and off the road, I have struggled with life and being true to myself. This has been a work in progress and I hope to find new confidence doing what I love, running and playing in the woods.
kookyrunner says
I love that you started your reset last year. I’m looking forward to seeing how that word carries me through 2021.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Such a great word choice! And, I love how you’re looking to apply it to different aspects of your life.
Here’s to a much better 2021 my friend 🙂
kookyrunner says
Thanks Michelle! I hope I’m able to follow through with all the changes I want to make this year.
Kimberly Hatting says
Reset is definitely a word all of us can utilize. As for a positive attitude, well all I can say is that it works for me 😉 Being positive does not mean you’re ignoring the “bad,” but choosing to focus on the good will bring more light and laughter to one’s day. Here’s to a great 2021!!!
kookyrunner says
Yes! Choosing to focus on the good is a better way to look at it. I’m not a pessimist but I’m a realist so sometimes it’s hard for me to pull our positives out of bleak situations, but I’m working on it.
Darlene S Cardillo says
Definitely a good word for everyone.
I wish the pandemic was over and I could rally do a re-set.
Instead, I’m trying to focus on the good and stay positive as you are.
kookyrunner says
I think keeping a positive mindset is really going to be important as we’re approaching almost a year since everything shut down.
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I have been saying to myself that I’m looking forward to a reset in 2021 so I can absolutely relate! I’m also trying to be better about stretching…I don’t seem to recover as quickly as I used to! And good luck with online dating! I know it’s changed a lot since I was on there but I wish you the best!
kookyrunner says
Great minds think alike! I definitely do not recover as fast as I used to so the stretching is very necessary, lol.
Deborah Brooks says
I love your choice and it seems perfect for your goals and where you are right now. I am sure it is hard so hard to put yourself out there in the dating world especially now but good for you!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Deborah! I’m looking forward to seeing how I can utilize this word throughout the year.
Shathiso says
I love this post – thanks for sharing your word (brilliant choice by the way!) as well as something personal. I think your new approach in all three areas shows honesty and a determination to bring some change. My phrase this year is “Health and Strength” (strength as in strength training) – these are two areas I need to get on top of. My personal word that I didn’t share on the blog is DARE. I’m sometimes too cautious in areas of my life (particularly work) and I really want to dare a lot more.
kookyrunner says
Thank you! I absolutely love your phrase for this year – Health and Strength are two of the most important things we can have. Dare is also a great word! Like you, I tend to be more cautious but sometimes it’s good to take a risk!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Really love all of this Kim! Particularly the active recovery reset. So important.
No, I didn’t know you’d been married. Kudos to you for putting yourself out there in these times — that is HARD. Recently a friend of my husband’s asked him & another friend about dating apps. I mean, seriously? We’ve both been married a long, long time (the person in question had been married, too, but sadly his wife died).
I hope you at least find some nice guys to chat with! Finding the one would be the cherry on top.
Good luck with work, too!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Judy! Navigating the dating apps sometimes feels like a full time job. It’s definitely not easy – that’s for sure!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
Reset is a great word for 2021! So versatile and can be applied to many different areas of life like you said.
I’m sad to have missed this link up because I had a word for 2021 too- Confidence. I’m going after some killer goals in 2021 and having confidence in myself will be key to getting where I want to be in life!
kookyrunner says
I really love your word for 2021! Confidence is a very strong word and seems so fitting for you and your goals for 2021.
Zenaida Arroyo says
I love your word! I like that it can be applied to many things in your professional and personal life.
kookyrunner says
Thanks! I am really going to work on utilizing it this year, no matter hard things get.
Anne says
I love your word. Mine is Focus (I have not yet written about it on ye olde blog, since it’s been an insane week… ). I also wish I knew you better so you could hold me accountable to your goal of not always chasing the “extra” workout. I’m pretty good at the stretching / foam rolling routine, but I have a terrible habit of just adding “one more thing” to my workout, and I know I should take it easier some days.
Also? I hope you manage to connect with at least a few nice people through the dating apps. I admire you for putting yourself out there again. That takes courage. Good luck!
kookyrunner says
Thanks so much Anne! I love your word of focus – with so much going on in the world, it can be easy to lose focus on what’s really important.
The dating apps are kind of a disaster but I am hoping to find a diamond in the rough!
