Happy Tuesday! I hope that you’re having a great week so far. While we’re not experiencing an official “heatwave” this week, it’s still pretty warm (temps in the 90s). Although it’s important to stay hydrated, it’s even more important to do so during the summer.
This week’s Tuesday Topic: What are your favorite summer drinks to help you stay hydrated? You can write about this topic, or feel free to post any running related blog post. Remember to Link-up with Kim and Zenaida and the bottom of this post!
Here are a few of my favorite summer drinks to stay hydrated when the temperatures rise!
Lemon Water
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy lemonade, but sometimes it can be a little sweet. Lemon water is a little tart but also so refreshing. I usually make a pitcher of it on the weekend to enjoy during the week. I don’t drink it daily, but it can really help if you’re feeling bloated, as it’s a natural diuretic.
Water
I think this one is self explanatory but is there anything better than ice cold water after a run?!
Smoothies
This is another drink that I have all year, but I tend to drink more smoothies in the summer. The great thing about smoothies is that no two smoothies are the same, so you never get bored. You can add a variety of fruits and vegetables. In the summer I try to always add fruits and vegetables with a high amount of water, such as cucumbers and watermelon.
Tell me: What are your favorite summer drinks to stay hydrated?

I do start every morning with lemon water! I struggle with smoothies more in winter, but in summer it’s kind of a no brainer. When I run at home, I usually recover with a smoothie.
I would actually add tea to the list, which I do drink year round — actual tea, not ice tea (which I am not fond of, go figure).
And of course there’s water + Nuun, which I also drink year round, but during the summer I probably drink twice as much of it!
Love your title graphic.

Yup, a smoothie is so good for recovery after a run! I love adding my protein powder to it as well.
Tea should definitely be added to the list. I don’t drink iced tea often, but when I do, it’s always in the summer.
Karen says
I do love a good smoothie! Water is also an important one – I need to remember to drink it more often.
kookyrunner says
I try to make sure I’m getting up during the work day to refill my water bottle. That reminds me to keep drinking!
Wendy says
You know I love my morning smoothies. Funny tho, I don’t think of them as hydrating! Lemon water is one of my favorites but I just don’t drink it enough. Same with cucumber water. Thanks for the reminder!
kookyrunner says
cucumber water is great too!
Angie @ Two For the Road says
It’s been so hot here in MN that I am drinking cucumber water by the gallon (ok, that’s an exaggeration, but you get what I mean). It just seems to be the only thing to quench my thirst. I am also like you about smoothies– I make them mostly in the summer, but there are winter days when I wish I was in the tropics and so I make them then too.
kookyrunner says
I totally understand! The heat and humidity the past 2 weeks has been pretty bad – so important to stay hydrated!
Zenaida Arroyo says
Definitely water! You can never go wrong with that. 🙂 Interesting about the lemon water. I should alternate between that and my hibiscus tea so I don’t get tired of it.
kookyrunner says
That’s a great idea about alternating the hibiscus and lemon water.
Darlene says
Just plain water.
and chocolate milk…
kookyrunner says
Sometimes I do enjoy chocolate milk after a run.
Black Knight says
In this period I am drinking a lot of smoothies (my doctor’s advice also). They helps a lot to stay healthy.
… and water of course.
kookyrunner says
Smoothies make a great meal replacement, especially if they have enough protein!
San says
I love smoothies and don’t make them often enough. Thansk for the reminder!
kookyrunner says
No problem! They can easily replace a meal once you add your favorite protein powder to them as well!

As you can relate, with my current Invisalign situation, I’m rocking the water LOL I’m really surprised how easy that transition from flavored drinks to “boring” old water was. It’s gonna be a little tricky as my 26.2 training plays out (because I’ll need more than just water for the super long runs), but for now it’s been a non-issue.
kookyrunner says
When I was doing long runs, I still wore my invisalign but I did drink my water with tailwind. It didn’t stain the aligners at all, which was great!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
I am a big sparkling water drinker somehow I find it more satisfying than regular water. I am sure drinking a ton this summer!
kookyrunner says
Yes! I should have added that to my list too. I love sparkling water, especially the La Croix and bubbly.
Shathiso says
There’s nothing like a smoothie for me at the end of my run! That has become a post-long run ritual for me and you are so right, no two are the same so there is so much variety.
kookyrunner says
Exactly! You really can’t go wrong with smoothies.
Debbie says
Water, water, water!!! I keep a bottle with me all the time. I also drink nuun on the run, plus a glass right after a run and before bed. It’s so hard this time of year!
kookyrunner says
Me too! I always have water nearby.
Rachel says
Yup, water all the way. I’m not a huge fan of lemon water to be honest. I know it’s good for you and all that but eh… not my fave. If I need to balance electrolytes, I grab a stick of SOS. It’s delish.
kookyrunner says
I think lemon is one of those things where you either love it or hate it, lol
Marc Pelerin says
That’s a great graphic that shows how much water is in each fruit and veggie. I like that!
kookyrunner says
Thanks! Google to the rescue every time, lol
Bethany Rutledge says
I thought I commented but it disappeared. I love your ideas for staying hydrated. Will implement a few for sure.
kookyrunner says
Oh no, sorry to hear about the disappearing comment! My blog was down for a few minutes yesterday so that is probably why.
Cedar says
Yes!! I love lemon water – more than lemonade too! I drink all these things, but the only other one I’d add is herbal teas since they can be a nice change from plain water.
kookyrunner says
Yes, herbal tea is a great summer beverage too!
Dominique Cheylise says
Lemon water is my absolute favorite!
kookyrunner says
It’s so refreshing!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Lemon water is one of my faves! I’ve also been drinking a lot of water with lime and mint this summer – trying to make good use of all the mint in my herb garden 😉
kookyrunner says
I need to start using lime – thanks for the idea! I bet it tastes delicious with the mint too 🙂
Cari says
Bubbly water. I don’t even need the sweeteners of some seltzers, but I find it easier to drink more when it’s fizzy. I’m on my 3rd can of plain seltzer this morning after two iced coffee
I like smoothies, byt don’t find them hydrating in the same way
kookyrunner says
I think I’m lucky because I really enjoy just plain water, but I do like to add a little flavor to it sometimes by adding lemon or other fruits.
