Happy Tuesday! It’s time for another edition of Tuesday Topics. This week’s Tuesday Topic: Let’s go down memory lane and tell us about the house/street you grew up in Remember to link-up with Kim and Zenaida and the bottom of this post.
I’m going off topic today since it’s World Mental Health Day. Annually, World Mental Health Day on October 10th raises awareness and mobilizes efforts to support mental health. I am so happy that the subject of mental health has become less taboo over the past few years. Anything to break the stigma about discussing mental health is a good thing!
For me, there it definitely a correlation between exercise and mental health. While I would never call it my therapy, exercise does help my mental health. Exercise releases endorphins. These endorphins trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. This has been proven to me time and time again. I can be in a crappy mood before a workout (especially in the morning), or really not want to workout at all, but once I get started, I start to slowly feel better. By the end of the workout, my mood is completely changed.
Beside exercise, there are many ways to “check-in” with yourself throughout the day. I love these two graphics that I found online a few months ago. It’s a great reminder to check on your feelings and identify why you might be having those feelings at the time.
Tell Me: Does exercise help your mental health?

Oh, that’s a great checklist! I especially like the one about being kind to yourself and to others. It’s a great way to measure our mental health – I am a lot brusker with others when I feel stressed and tired.
And you are absolutely right, working out lifts my mood, too!

Yes! So often I have to check myself for speaking unkind to myself. It’s like i would never say those things to someone else so why do I say them to myself?

Totally agree that working-out provides a great fix to a bad mood. I used to always say that running was my drug of choice, but since adding other forms of fitness to my life (cycling, strength, stairs, etc.), I have numerous other “fix” options to access as well 🙂
kookyrunner says
Yup – I used to think it was running but really it’s any kind of workout 🙂
Darlene Cardillo says
That checklist is perfect. Esp about being kind to others. People get really snarky when they are stressed or depressed.
And exercise is crucial. If I can’t run everyday then I know I need to find another physical outlet.
kookyrunner says
That’s so true – I do think people have become less kind and patient since the pandemic which is a bummer.

Exercise is my go-to for a mood boost. Lack of proper nutrition can really affect my mood too. I’m like one of those Snickers commercials – I’m really not myself when I’m hungry!
kookyrunner says
Same here! I have noticed that my mood is definitely off if I eat a lot of junk food.

This has been a week to really take a check on mental health. Exercise is definitely a mood booster for me always.

Exercise 100% always puts me in a better mood, even if I am cursing out the instructor while exercising lol

I started running again and am feeling a bit better. Part of it too is that I made time in the morning to do it instead of continuing to work. Work will always be there but taking care of myself should be my #1 priority.
kookyrunner says
Absolutely! I try to look at the time I schedule to workout as time that I am investing in myself and my overall health.
